Thule Big Mouth Bike Mount

Thule Big Mouth Bike Mount
“Your bike ain't goin' nowhere!” says the Thule Big Mouth bike rack. The Big Mouth's titular Big Mouth is a clamp that securely grabs your bike's frame to hold it in place without you having to remove the front wheel. With this secure bike carrier, all you do is put your wheels in the track, tighten the straps and attach the clamp arm. The Big Mouth self adjusts for whatever bike frame you happen to be carrying, and its dual locking system locks the rack to your car and the bike to the rack, so unless they have a cutting torch or the key, nobody's getting your bike.
Bottom Line: Why bother removing your wheel?

I've had my Big Mouths for about a year and I've come to pretty much love them. For starters, they are incredibly easy to install and even easier to put to use. I can get two bikes in their trays in under two minutes. I drive a Pontiac Vibe so it's a little taller than most cars but this rack is still a breeze. There are a couple of tricks that I've learned though. First, place the mouth in a vertical position that way you can plop your bike into the jaws right away. This will help hold your bike upright while you work your fat mtn. tires in the trays. Secondly, if you want to really secure your ride, before you close the jaws, reach up and squeeze the jaws around your frame and simultaneously close the lever. This will increase the pressure on the frame and to this day, I've never had any problems with the arm slipping on either my mountain bike or my roadie. Another little thing I've learned is that you can use the tire straps like a winch to really wedge your tires into the tray. There is a bit of sway when cornering or going over bumps but I've never been worried about the bikes coming off. Other than the increased wind noise, gas mileage takes a slight hit, even with two bikes up there. All in all, I'd be likely to buy this rack system again and I'd definitely recommend them to a friend but if you're looking for a rack that holds your bike completely secure, take a look at fork mount racks.

I've had the Thule Big Mouth for a year. I've also forgot a bike was on top and drove into the garage twice. I wouldn't recommend doing that, but the good news is that if you do this rack is designed to allow the bike to break off instead of damaging the fork.
Write your question here..Will this rack connect to my factory
Write your question here..Will this rack connect to my factory bars on my 2005 Subaru Outback? Or do I need to buy more parts? Like and adaptor?

The easiest way to be certain is to click the Build Your Thule Rack link at the top of this page, and plug in your vehicle's info and it should tell you everything you will need.

Had the 01 model for 5 years, then had to buy another for my downhill ride. Easy to install on your rack, easy to put the bike up top, easy to lock, and never falls apart. 7 years plus on mine and still going strong.

I have a 1987 Jeep Wagoneer Limited. My wife and I want to take our mountain bikes with us and I was wondering if these roof mounts would work on my Jeep? If not, could you recommend some. Thank you.

Hey Russ... check out the Rack Configurator...you can put in your vehicle info and it will show you all available options for a rack system. We have them for both Thule and Yakima, so you can do research for both brands.

I love these racks! So far they have given me no problems at all. They are tough and work well. I have used them only a few times with total satisfaction. I would recommend these to anyone.
Dont think so

Not a very secure feeling. I have had my rack for almost a year. The "claw" is very loose and will slide a couple inches down the frame (I have a Cannondale F600). The bike sways left and right as go around corners and over speed bumps. Going to get a new "more secure" rack very soon.
Do you know if these racks are compatible with the Toyota 4runner
Do you know if these racks are compatible with the Toyota 4runner roof rack system?

Hey Jason, you can find compatibility info for your 4Runner with our super-fly Rack Configurator linked at the top of the page. Most of the time racks can be adapted to your roof cross-bars with a particular piece of hardware. Check it out, it should give you all the info you need, and it's pretty easy to use.

Good caps. Only complaint- they should come with the bars, you pay 50$ for bars , you would think Thule could throw in some end caps.

Great Bike rack. I was even able to secure my daugters 20" Bike with this rack. The front strap had to be slightly angled, but no wobbling was created. I purchased the end caps because of the other reviews stating they were not included, well they were. Oh well guess I have a spare set.

I want to mount my mountain bike and two kids mountain bikes as well on my Jeep. Will this support the needed space for three on the roof top?

I have two on my Volkswagon Passat wagon roof, and there is still plenty of room. I'm not tall, so the edge position is the only place I can mount the bikes without a step-stool. I'd have to be higher up to place the center bike(s) on the bars. I do have the Thule adapter bars added to my factory rack.

BIG Mouth Causes Little Trouble
By: JonG
May 18, 2005
The Big Mouth Bike Mount works well. You have to maneuver the bike a bit to get the mouth to close properly on the down tube of your bike. At first, I was a bit concerned about how securely my bike was being held by the Big Mouth. But after a little experimentation, I found the position that works best for my bike to fit securely in the Big Mouth. Before taking any long trips with your bike mounted in the rack, I recommend you do some trial runs. It is possible to not have the bike as secure as it could be. If I could change one thing with this rack it would be to make the clamping arm a bit longer so the mouth piece that actually clamps on to the down tube of the bike sits more securely on the bike.
Best Rack!

I have 2 of these BigMouth racks and they'll hold my Mtn and Road bikes securely all day up the mountains at break-neck speeds. The front and rear straps keep the wheels secure in the tray while the Big Mouth keeps the frame securely in place. They are easy to load on top of my XC-70 and I don't have to worry about my hand slipping on my bike and having a fork come crashing down on my roof, worst case, a tire taps the car on the way up.
Solid

This bike rack gets the job done. At first it can be tricky to get the bike in the rack, but I quickly developed an effective method. Sometimes I have to pinch the clamp to get it tight around the bike frame but once it's on, it seems pretty stable. The whole rack is just super solid, as are all Thule products I have used.

Bike racks are going to be great. The installation was tricky, According to the dealer, the racks should have fit my "07" subaru outback, they did not. Had to buy the adapter bars. After I got the adapter everything installed beautifully. I am 5'4" and another worry was being able to lift both my mnt and road bikes. I will have to carry a small foot stool the adapter bars raised the rack another 5 or 6 inches, I was not happy about that. But with the stool I am able to pop the bikes right into the racks, secure them down and drive off without a worry. I also bought the key locks so don't have to worry about my bikes when I run into the store, ect. The riding season is just starting for me and I am excited to hit the road with my bikes securely locked in place. Would recommend these racks to anyone.

The thule mouth bike mount is great. It's easy to use. I put it on top of a Chevy Suburban, so it's a little awkward putting the bikes that far in the air, on to the rack, but I know they will be there when I get to my destination. I have four bikes/four racks. They hold'em tight and don't scratch them!!!
Super Easy

I found this rack very easy to install. The only note is that you need a ruler/tape measure and an allen key. The allen key comes with the rack, a ruler doesn't.
My bike gets on and off easily and feels secure.
The rack is also easy to take off the car for when you aren't using it. I assume that if you have locks then it wouldn't be, but I don't have locks. Yet.
