Shimano America XT WH-M775 Wheelset

Wheels should be at the top of your list if you're building or upgrading your XC mountain bike. Shimano's Deore XT WH-M775 Wheelset is affordable, and pretty dialed when compared to Shimano's reference XTR series. Okay, so you miss out on the titanium hubs (the XT wheelset has steel) and the scandium rims (aluminum instead), but you only pay a 156-gram penalty and you save about four hundred bones. That's enough for a set of disc brakes or a bad-ass crankset right there. The WH-M775 Wheelset comes with two quick-release skewers, and Centerlock hubs for use with Shimano disc brakes.

Bottom Line: Shimano saves you some dough without sacrificing a ton of performance.
