Question about the fit - I generally wear a 7 1/2 in regular

Question about the fit - I generally wear a 7 1/2 in regular shoes but can wear up to a 9 in my nike running shoes; I have a pair of 7 1/2 in these and they feel snug with a little room in the toe - how much room should there be in the toe area?
