Salomon XA Pro 3D Trail Running Shoe - Men's - 2007
Made for your morning run up mountain trails, the Salomon XA Pro 3D Men's Trail Running Shoe is Salomon's lightest advanced-chassis shock-absorbing shoe. The 3D advanced-chassis system pairs with close-to-the-ground construction for ultimate stability. This system stabilizes your feet over uneven terrain, without losing energy from your stride. Less stiff thanks to less TPU in the sole, the Pro 3D rises above the other XA models, providing more shock absorption. Built for moving quickly, the 3D has lightweight, breathable sandwich mesh, so you can run the best times of your season. Quickfit asymmetrical lacing with a lace pocket keeps your fit perfect through your entire race.
Bottom Line: Run faster in the super light XA Pro 3D.

These shoes are great: light weight and well designed with a lace management system that's hard to beat. The breathability yields the shoe's only drawback: water resistance. The model with Gore-Tex XCR take care of that if you're going to be running through water.
Good, but not great for me.

Xa Pro 3d- This shoe fits like a glove right out of the box. I love the way it feels and I love the way they fit my feet and they are super light. However, I'm 6'2 190. I don't run with any sort of finesse so with that being said, I need cushioning. On my first trail run they were awesome at first, but I noticed on descents there was barely any cushion! So, if you aren't a big guy, and don't need lots of cushioning, give these a try.. otherwise look somewhere else. Or.. if you just want some COOL looking walking shoes.. give theses a whirl. I give these a 5 for what they are, I give them a 3 for me personally.
Not for Wide Feet
By: jlslatton
December 27, 2007
So I've poured over the reviews on this site to find a good trail running shoe to replace my aging vasque velocity (which they no longer sell). I decided to get the XA Pro 3D based on the reviews here.
The shoe is actually quite nice and the lacing system was sweet. However, I must have wider feet than most of the reviewers here because these shoes were very narrow. The toebox had adequate room but between the toes and the heel it get very narrow. I tried twice to run in them and had to stop at 3/4 of a mile because of the pain on the outsides of both of my feet. I would not recommend this for people with wide feet.
It's a great shoe if it had fit me. I wish they made a wider version of it. I just wanted to submit this review to help those with wide feet make a better decision.
Oh, and this companies return policy rocks!.
EXCELLENT LONG DISTANCE SHOE
By: Seth Osprey Schumacher
January 16, 2008
I took this shoe with me on my thru-hikes of the Appalachian Trail and Continental Divide Trail. I LOVE THEM. In the entire 3700 miles I had 2 blisters, both on the AT, and have used four pairs. They last forever and keep me extremely comfy. They grip the trail great, a bonus in Maine and New Hampshire where the AT scales near verticle boulders in the trail, and they vent like no other and dry in a flash. I also run my ultras and relays in them on both road and trail and have never run in a better shoe.
GREAT SHOE; EXCELLENT SERVICE

My husband loves the shoes!! The fit very well and are comfortable. He usually wears a 7 1/2 and took an 8 in these.
Your customer service is the very best! Your shipping time is amazing. I will be back to shop again!!
Thank you!
not for dusty trails

Nice shoes, but your feet will get wet and dusty thanks to the mesh. The XA Pro 3D XCR is worth the extra money.
Really good trail shoe
By: Erik Stange
December 27, 2005
This shoe is a lightweight and responsive model featuring many of the better characteristics of Salomon shoes. The forefoot is a little wider than the XA Pro 2, and the overall feel is a lot more like a pure running shoe. I am in the process of wearing out my second pair, and I anticipate I'll come back for more in the future.
ALMOST Perfect
By: Haystack Needle
December 28, 2006
As I read so many positives about the XA Pro 3D, I'm compelled to add my thoughts. I've had three pairs, so I obviously am a fan (for the same reasons as earlier posted--feel, drainage, lacing, etc.). One important note, though: I'm 205 lbs and run on pretty rocky trails, and the mesh upper has consistently torn on top of the crease at the pinkie toe. Just something to consider if you're a heavier runner or running extra rough terrain--they're not as durable as the Montrail Hardrock, Continental Divide, or TNF 103 XCR. Otherwise, though, I agree that these are awesome shoes. If you're willing to replace them a month 80-100 miles earlier, buy them.
Great for C width foot!
By: Desert Backpacker
May 15, 2008
My size 11 'C' width foot loves these shoes. Salomon designed these to be super breatheable, and comfy. They are great for trail running; I used mine with a pack in place of a heavy backpacking boot, and I will be buying a new pair for this backpacking season. These are simply great shoes.
Almost perfect

July 18, 2006
I just finished the 450-mile 2006 Primal Quest, and did 80% of the foot sections in the Salomon XA Pro 3D. Although I should have had the Gore-Tex version to keep the sand out of them (yes, "sand" may be the only reason to look at Gore-Tex for adventure racing), they became my best friends during this unforgiving course. I started the race in different shoes, and promptly developed severe blisters due to sand packing in the toe box (as did many other racers). After switching to the 3Ds, I logged another 100 miles or so and my feet actually healed up, rather than deteriorate further - the 3Ds were excellent. I have two suggestions to make this great shoe even better: 1)add a thin nylon membrane in the sole to prevent rock bruise and 2)Add an integrated gaiter, but make it thinner/lighter/more breathable than the Nike Orizaba version.

These shoes are outstanding. I hiked the middle Teton in them without breaking them in at all and they were excellent. They stay tight, easy on, easy off, and excellent toe protection. Usually my toes get sore running and sliding down hill for extended periods of time but they never even got tired. What a shoe!!
these rock!

June 28, 2005
Salomon continues to improve on their already great trail runners with this model. I love everything about these, from the lacing system, breathability, stability and hopefully durability. The do have a bit of a break in period due (in my opinion) to the new stiff rock guard over the toe box. You won't be disappointed.

April 4, 2005
Very lightweight shoe. VERY Breathable. Getting great use out of them. The Kevlar pulls are a little restricting if too tight, but are good for adjusting for tightness on different parts of the foot. Not quite as much arch support as other Salomon shoes I have bought, but still a very good shoe.
Solomon XA 3D shoes are the best!

October 19, 2006
I am eight years out from smashing my ankle in a fifty foot fall ice climbing. I have climbed, hiked and even been on Denali since then, but my running days, I thought, were over. I tried running in boots with moderate success, but these shoes changed my life. They are more stable than my boots. I have now three pairs, just in case they take them off the market.
Excellent Shoes...

April 5, 2005
These are some great looking, and even greater fitting shoes. Very comfortable, and go with lots of attire if you are concerned about matching them with outfits. They are extremely comfortable, yet breathable and wick away rain well. I would not recommend them for sports activities other than running, as the design does not give good support through the front of the foot (almost twisted my ankle playing racquetball in them). This is due to the draw string laces they have. I like the design of the drawstring, however, you don't get that secure feeling when moving side to side that you do from full laced shoes. Also, I'm concerned how long the cinching mechanism will stay working, as the shoes would be useless if this thing breaks (not as simple as replacing laces).
Very impressive

July 8, 2006
I wore them for the first time this weekend, a few small hikes (a couple miles each) before going on a rough 15-mile 2 day adventure in Theodore Roosevelt NP. They held up extremely well and caused basically no discomfort considering they weren't broken in. Very light, but pretty good support, and you can really feel the breeze through the mesh (and the spear grass, unfortunately).
Very breathable running shoe
By: Oregon Gary
August 17, 2005
Very good breathability, feet are quite comfortable when worn along with a wicking sock. I have narrow feet, and love the Salomons, nice narrow heel but plenty of room for the toes. Lacing is a cinch. I felt sure-footed on trails and plenty of cushioning for pavement. I have quite a few pairs of running shoes, these are among my favorites.
Great shoe

This is my fourth pair of Salomon shoes. I haven't been disappointed yet. Lightweight, supportive and breathable.
Great ultra shoe - low arch
By: Luc
August 5, 2005
I've tried Salomon Shoes over the years and they never fit right. I tried these on at a retail outlet after a day on in the White Mountains (NH) with a friend who is a longtime Salomon user. They felt right on! My previous shoes are Adidas Supernova Trail, and my road shoes have been Asics DS Trainer and Mizuno Maverick. I have a low arch and need a big toe-box. I decided to size up to a 12 for the 3Ds, so I can now wear two pairs of thin socks, or one heavier pair, and the ride is excellent both on rocky trail and pavement. Grip and toe protection are also outstanding. Note that these are a flex/cushion ride, but not wimpy. The lacing system kicks butt. Just ordered a second pair.
Great shoe

Its a great shoe, rugged enough for any trails but still a very good choice for running around town. I really like the reinforced toe area. If you need a good, sturdy, reliable shoe I would definitely recommend these.
Ideal trail shoe
By: Tom Hayes
August 15, 2005
I used this shoe for 2/3 of Hardrock and like almost everything about it. Wide toebox and nice bumper. I am closer to the trail yet good underfoot protection. The shoe dries very quickly. The upper holds my foot back on steep descents (no black toes since wearing them!). When my fingers are numb and dumb I can still untie the shoe to change socks. The lace stays tight and is easy to tighten or loosen as needed. One problem, the lace does break and costs $10 to replace.
Second pair of the trailrunners
By: Simon Niva
September 15, 2005
I've already worn out one pair of shoes and it took a lot of running in the Swedish forests to do that. I don't think the soles have any shock absorber so the forest is the right place with soft trails and moss. It's ok to walk with them on harder ground but no more than that. The good thing with stiffer soles is that sharp stones don't cause any problems.
The tips are covered with a rubber layer which make them lasting against tearing from stones and branches on the ground. A neat thing about these shoes is the Salomon shoelaces system. Just pull and hide the laces in the little pocket. The laces last pretty long but where just about to break when I bought my new shoes. The inside of the heal was also worn out but that could be because of me being careless tying my laces before non-jogging activities.
The best thing with these shoes is how they suit my feet. I get a great support for my arch and it feels like I've been running several miles the first time I use them. Try them in a store before ordering.
Terrible shoe!
By: Anonymous
March 10, 2006
First let me say that the service from here was great: no issue with the company. Wish I could say the same for the product. The shoe itself is horrible. I say "shoe" because the left shoe fit pretty well (though not as much cushion as I thought there'd be in the heel.) The right one is like a completely different shoe: had to check the labels twice to make sure they really were supposedly the same size and model. The insole at the heel feels like it's slipped to the outside and the arch cushion is so out of place it rubbed blisters on my arch within an hour of just walking in them. I could certainly never trail run in them: they are so uncomfortable I can't even walk in them for general use. I'll never buy Salomon again.
Warning: shoe has been redesigned

January 25, 2007
This was my third pair of Salomon XA Pros. The first two pairs were a perfect fit for my feet, and I was looking forward to the same experience. I couldn't have been more disappointed. Salomon have changed the last used for these shoes so dramatically that I can't even get my foot into the shoe (I have very high arches).
Love the lacing system
By: topomap
August 7, 2006
The funky Salomon lacing system on these shoes works great - quick and easy to put your shoes on, and then relaiable when you're hiking - no more laces getting untied, caught on shrubs, easy to loosen/tighten up, etc. I use these shoes for hiking, and often wear them around camp with the lacing loose - unlike a regular shoe, I don't have any trailing laces to trip myself.
One other thing I like about these shoes is the big rubber toe guard - great for when you're hiking off-trail or scrambling up over rocks.
Potential Cons: The kevlar laces are held in place by a plastic speed-lace widget that could break. I've never had any problem with this, but it would really suck if this plastic thing were to break. I bet you could jerry-rig some sort of fix to get back to civilization, but it would be significantly more difficult to fix than regular laces.
Very comfortable
By: mattd
June 15, 2006
I alternate between INOV-8 Flyroc, Merrell Overdrive, and this Salomon XAPro3D...this is much more comfortable, it has a good balance of cushion and stability. They wear a little heavier than the others, but the comfort is worth it! Definitely recommend.
xa pro 3d rocks

March 29, 2006
Yeah this is a dynamite shoe. I ran a 50k route with challenging mountain terrain with shoes right out of the box - no problems. I have put lots of miles in very wet conditions, including down streambeds, endless downpours, swim crossings, and the quick draining protects my feet. I have noticed that the EVA compresses about 15% very quickly, but then the shoe is very resilient from there on - there are lots of 35-50k runs in one pair of shoes - many hundreds of miles. Worth the 100 beans.
Not too bad
By: JHawkins
June 20, 2006
The shoes fit great, but the material on the inside of the shoe, near the ankle is fraying, as are the sides of the tongue. I'm a bit disappointed that a shoe that is supposed to handle a bit rougher use is less hardy than a basic running shoe. Like I said, it is a great fitting shoe, works great on the trails, but the fraying is a bit disconcerting.
Surprise fit

June 19, 2006
I wear 11 or 11 1/2 AA. After trying on my son's shoes which were 11 1/2, I was surprised that they tightened up good around the ankles and the heel did not slip. The wider width gives me good comfort in the toe area. I like the shoes and wear them often.

This is my second pair of Salomon XA, this time they are called XA Pro 3D and are even more comfortable, fit extremely well and are much more stable. I couldn't have found a better fit for my varied style of running both on very small trails and sometimes asphalt.

I have never owned a pair of Salomons in the past. With the help of the web-site people, I was talked into trying them...and WOW...I love them! If I was a gangster, livin in the hood, listening to 50 cents, I would say these shoes are the bomb shiznitle. I don't really know what that means, but that is what the kids are saying these days. Then again I don't live in the hood. So I say, if you buy them... you wont regret it.

The XA Pro 3Ds are excellent. The lacing system, the shoe stability-- I don't think I could have made a better choice. I'm seriously considering stockpiling these shoes in case they stop making them.

November 9, 2006
Met the UPS guy at the door, ripped the package open, secured the shoes on my feet with its quick lace system, ran on the treadmill like a hamster cause the kids are in the house hence cannot leave the vicinity, did a couple of miles, snug fit, cool feet, great arch support, impressed with own imagination necessary to stay on the machine, amazed with how the shoe feels despite it being right out of the box. Feels like its worth the price and looking forward to more miles on my first ever from Salomon.

Sweetest shoes ever
By: Santa Barbara Bryan
January 15, 2007
For someone with a poor lower back that cannot lace shoes up very easily but still loves to hike and bike, these shoes have been amazing. I've had my first pair for 15 months, wearing them almost everyday for some type of activity and I couldn't be happier. I had to get another pair.
XA Pros deliver
By: JCT
January 30, 2007
As a long-time Salomon owner (6+ pairs of shoes), I'm pleased that these XA Pro's continue to deliver. This is my 2nd pair of this exact model, replaced only because of an exceptionally bad move on my part (and heavy-duty wear).
These are exceptionally well-constructed shoes, with very grippy soles (including reasonable wet-surface traction) and the best lacing system around. I've found these to be great shoes for standard city walking, light hiking and moderate trail running.
The shoe fits close enough around the ankle to prevent most stones from being a nag. The lacing systema and pull-tab on the heel allow for a close fit, and still preserve an ease-of-entry for your foot that is often lost through efforts to close up the ankle.
For those who prefer a more pronounced arch, you might check out Montrail. I keep a couple of pairs Montrails for longer runs or pure-running days,...but - I've not found a better all-around AR/AT shoe than the XAs.
I prefer the non-XCR versions very strongly over the more expensive XCR-lined model. The poor ventilation due to an XCR layer makes a shoe almost useless to wear in any situation which isn't a very wet trail.
Love these shoes!

February 23, 2007
I have logged only about 20 miles in these shoes but so far they have met all my expectations. I am just getting into adventure racing but believe these will be prefect for this. My only complaint is the lacing system they are hard to adjust and can cut off circulation pretty easy if not careful. You get used to them the more you wear them.
This is my Second Pair
By: EJR3
February 9, 2007
This is my second pair of these shoes so obviously I am a fan. This is a very lightweight, breathable shoe with enough cushioning to be your daily pair if you have a fairly neutral foot-strike. In addition, after a few months with the lacing system you will be shocked how antiquated traditional laces seem.
Excellent shoe
By: bmadd
February 16, 2007
This was my 2nd pair of these trail runners to have as a backup. Very lightweight shoe but has excellent stability. Feet have never bruised due to rocks or roots. They breathe & dry very well. Lacing system is awesome although pocket for lacing could be a little bigger. Get you a good set of inserts and run till your hearts content.
SOLID PERFORMER
By: Rbreddin75
March 15, 2007
I purchased the XA PRO after wearing the XA COMP for about 6 months. I wore both in the GoldRush 24hr Adventure Race in Woodstock, Ga a week and a half ago. This SHOE is a SOLID performer! It's got a more stable platform than the COMP and I could feel the difference after 6 miles of canoe portage and 8 miles of trekking. They drained well and dried out fast (there were a couple 3am river crossings thrown in for sport). GREAT SHOE !!

As a new-comer to the sport of trail running, I am pleased to recommend the XA Pro 3D with all of my enthusiasm! Straight out of the box and onto a 230 pound frame, these shoes worked effortlessly! From absorbing rough terrain and a novice gait to running through freshly thawed spring runoff, Salomon's XA made every part of the experience enjoyable. Overall, a stylish shoe with the comfort and safety of the foot in mind.

This shoe is way comfortable (if you couldn't tell by the heading). It rubbed a little when i first put it on but now it is perfect. I have a good friend who isn't all into the trailrunning (but he's a huge runner) and he is getting a pair of these for himself. He tried them on and loved them. The style is great too. When I'm just wearing them around I'm always getting compliments. Great buy.

This is my husband's second pair of XA Pro 3D Trail Running Shoes. He has a narrow foot that the XA Pro 3D fits very well because of the lacing system. Also, the shoes provides all the right support for his feet while running. I bought from this site since it was the best price I found online.

November 5, 2007
This is my second pair, and I've taken them from trail running in the Arizona desert to light backpacking in the Sierra-Nevadas. They dry quickly, have plenty of support, and hold up pretty well. The Salomon quick lace system works great. I've never had the laces come loose, just don't let your cat eat them. Thats the only reason I'm on pair 2.

September 19, 2007
This is the 4th pair of the XA's that I have worn. Having a new color is nice to tell which pair is new when pulling them out of the closet.
I wore this pair for the WF 100. The sole of these shoes is great. No delamination, very true wear. The toe box is protective. Could use a little more forefoot cushion/stiffness. Foot rides pretty low in the shoe which makes them very stable. Unfortunately that also lead to a little pressure on my lateral malleolus on uneven trails. Lacing system is a plus.
Great Shoe, better on the dirt
By: jlewis115
August 21, 2007
I have loved this shoe from the first moment I pulled it out of the box. I have a high arch and it took me a couple runs to get used to the support and how close your foot is to the ground. The tread and traction on the trail makes for great support and the low profile adds to stability. They are not my favorite shoe for running on the street, but they are not designed to be. That said, I couldn't be happier with the product.
Great product but don't confuse this with a running shoe.

September 20, 2007
As my first trail running shoe from a company more known for their hiking shoes I didn't know what to expect. Excellent support and protection, similar to what you WOULD expect in a hiking shoe/boot. Having run cross country (now referred to as "trail running", as if we have a need to differentiate to people whether we shall be running on the road today or the trail) for over 30 years I find this shoe much closer to a light hiking shoe than a running shoe. Nothing wrong with that if you really want to run in a fairly stiff, heavy shoe but trust me, there is nothing wrong with taking a conventional running shoe "off-road". The Salomon will give you marginally better protection from rocks and debris but then one could argue that a lighter shoe might allow you to pick up your feet easier, avoiding the obstacles altogether. Perhaps the biggest benefit would be for going off-trail, over rocks, scree, boulders, downed tree limbs, etc but then they wouldn't be called "trail" running shoes. My first pair tore around the toe box where the shoe flexes. The upper material ironically does not seem up to the task of the rough and tumble world of trail running as one might expect. Since this was starting to happen on the other shoe as well I considered it a design flaw. The site was great in exchanging the product and getting out a replacement for me at no cost. Pretty amazing these days but I would expect that Salomon is backing them up so hats off to them even if they fell short on their shoe design. 3 stars for the shoe, 5 for the site and 4 for Salomon.
Great Shoe

May 3, 2007
Ran in these shoes last night for the first time. The fit was a little bit snug, but not so tight that it was uncomfortable. After running 3 miles in them the felt great. The lacing system is simple and stays tight, the shoes are really light weight and it didn't even notice them at all after I got going. The tread is def. sticky and I didn't have any issues with loosing grip on surfaces (it was dry when I ran). Overall, great shoe... Much more comfortable than my The North Face Endurance trail runners.

What a great shoe! This is the best trail shoe I've owned. It felt great out of the box. I was running in the GCS Pro. The XA Pro 3D feels much lighter, and I still have the stability I need.

I was a bit skeptical of Salomon's lacing system, but I soon learned that they work just as good if not better than traditional laces. Once they are cinched tight, they remain tight an conformed to your foot. They are super light and breath great while running. They grip well on all terrain. My only gripe is that the long tightening string can get in your way a bit.
Great Every Day Shoe
By: Jim McIntosh
June 6, 2006
I've owned this shoe for 2 years now and it's still holding up strong. It was my every day shoe up until a month ago when I purchased another pair. I've still kept these around just to have a backup shoe but I often find myself wearing these on the weekends because they are just so comfortable. The lacing system is very handy. I'm not a person who likes to tie my shoes. The only drawback for this shoe is that the sole was not as strong and ridged as it could have been for trail running.
I LIKE!

November 12, 2007
Sweet shoe overall. At first was hesitant about the toe box, because it was bigger than I was used too, I have a narrow foot, but that hasn't been a problem for me overall. I found it to be super comfy both uphill and downhill. Also the lacing system seemed weak, but have held up quit nicely. Nice adjustability within the lacing system which makes for a personalized fit. Great all around traction. Overall, a nice breathable, light weight shoe. My first, but not my last Salomon.
Another solid shoe from Salomon
By: Knuckledragger
October 2, 2007
After wearing out my Montrail's I was in the market for a new pair of trail runners. I had tried Salomon's initial offering for the adventure race market, the Raid Race, and had been somewhat pleased. So I opted for the XA Pro 3D this time around and I'm glad I did. The XA Pro 3D is a solid shoe. The lacing system is easy to tighten and balance the load. The heel cup is sturdy and increases the lateral stability, and the mesh upper has great air flow. All in all, another solid shoe from Salomon.
