Petzl Vasak 12-Point Mountaineering Crampon

The classic design of the Petzl Vasak FL Mountaineering Crampons makes them an ideal choice for general mountaineering and glacier travel. The horizontal front points provide excellent shear resistance in steep snow. Petzl gave the Vasak FL Crampons a Flexlock full-strap binding system to allow them to be strapped to any boots or even your trail running shoes in a pinch. Whether you want to climb Rainer or climb Denali, these Petzl crampons get you up there.

Bottom Line: The Petzl Vasak FL Mountaineering Crampons are proof that simple designs still provide great performance.

Good All Around Crampon

I'm not sure why the other reviewers seem to think that these crampons "aren't designed for use with plastic boots" or not strong enough for serious ice climbing. I've used these crampons with plastic boots, and used them for numerous pitches of water ice and mixed climbing. They work fine. For M6 desperates you will be happier with a pair of mono-point crampons, but for alpine routes and water ice to WI4, these crampons will get the job done. They are lighter than comparable all-purpose crampons too, which is a big deal on a long route.

I wear a size 47 mountaineering boot, does anyone know if the regular linking bar will fit, or will I definitely need a long linking bar setup?

The regular/medium link bar that comes with it goes up to size 46. So you would need to get the long link bar for a size 47 boot.

Are these crampons good for something such as crossing a 3 mile glacier in Alaska?

As stated above, these are pretty light crampons and can help add safetey to mountaineering or slushy trails, but serious ice climbing they would not be strong enough.

Sturdy Crampons

These 'pons are exactly as advertised. A light-ish strap crampons perfect for mountaineering, or just hiking up a slushy trail. I would not recommend them for ice climbing, or anything that requires serious front-pointing, as they are not designed for use with plastic boots. If you want serious ice-climbing performance, buy something else. But if you want a light pair of crampons which will add a much-needed sense of safety while ascending steep or slippery slopes, the Vasaks are perfect.
