Petzl TacTikka Plus Headlamp

The Petzl TacTikka Plus is a tactical version of the popular Tikka Plus Headlamp. It has all of the great features including 4 LEDs instead of 3, a push on/off button instead of a slider switch, a tiltable housing, and 3 brightness settings with strobe function. These features have been combined with a red lens that easily flips down over the LED's for night vision. It is also water-resistant for all-weather use. The 150-hour burn time and durability of the LED makes the TacTikka Plus reliable. It doesn't throw out huge candlepower (33ft or 10m), making it ideal for activities requiring close-up lighting like trail hiking, setting up camp, and reading. The TacTikka Plus runs on 3 AAA batteries (included), and at 2.5 ounces, weighs next to nothing in your pack.

Bottom Line: The TacTikka Plus gives you night vision.

Better than I expected

This headlight gives off much more light than I thought it would, even on the lowest setting. Comfortable and certainly easy to use. I bought it for camping/fishing/ice fishing, but have already used it while working in the attic and love it. I was worried about the batt compartment door not staying on, but so far it has been fine. I would recommend it.

Does anyone know if the battery housing on the current tactikka...

Does anyone know if the battery housing on the current tactikka plus still come off easily when bumped or pushing the on button? I've noticed a few people had complaints from 2006. Wondering if people that purchased in 2008 had the same problem. Thanks

I've used the same headlamp for years and it never failed me. I just gave to old one to my kid, and replaced it with the same model, this time with a red lens so I can sneak into my deer stand before sunrise. (I hope deer really are color blind:-))

This is a great product! Very lightweight and being able to angle it helps a lot. Also being able to change how bright the light is makes it nice so it doesn't totally kill your nightvision.

This is one piece of gear I couldn't do without. Worn every night on 3 trips around bases in Iraq and at least a few times at home to keep from waking wife in the bedroom. Comfortable, red lens flips down easily, AAA batteries seem to last forever, easily adjustable for best angle. I literally don't leave home without it. There may be some newer cooler headlamps out there these days but you can't go wrong with this one.

TacTikka Plus is sweet

I understand now why this is the favorite lamp of the military special ops teams. My first use was less than tactical as it only involved me, my bike, and my dog on a night ride. The light was plenty bright to show the hazards of the trail on a moonless night. The angle adjustment was great to put it at a good angle while strapped to my bike helmet. The brightness adjustment was handy as the light levels changed from city to country lighting. I'm hooked.

This replaced a much older headlamp and I was unsure if it would be bright enough and...indeed it is. Blindingly bright but provides enough to easily get around. Isn't too heavy either, and comfortable to wear.

July 5, 2007

so I bought this for the trail and hunting, so far I have used this thing more at home than outdoors. Things like working on an electrical outlet in a dark room, looking for a cat at night outdoors, walking the dog at night. It is just a handy tool!! I cant wait to try it in the woods, but so far I have gotten my moneys worth!! A best buy item.

This headlamp is perfect if you don't need the brightest one in the world. For camping/hiking/climbing its perfect. While it may not be the brightest headlamp out there I find it more than adequate for all my needs. The red lens flips up very easily and is an option that I feel all headlamps should be required to have. You just don't need the regular light option in most situations and it is very annoying when someone blinds me with their white light while I'm trying to maintain my night vision. The battery pack issue others complain about is not an issue if you put the batteries in correctly. They aren't the easiest to put in but you just have to make sure everything is clipped in and your batteries will not fall out. It might take you a minute or so to put them in correctly, a very small price to pay considering the great functionality of this headlamp.

great little light

By: beach runner (6)
April 15, 2007

The TacTikka Plus is a light-weight light to see what is at hand or foot. The red light is great; preserves night-vision and since it is attached as a sliding shade; it cannot be lost. I have used it regularly to see my way about 1/2 mile hike to fish early in the morning and to bike home at night. Battery life is good. The entire apparatus is fairly comfortable. The downside is the housing falls open when you push the light button, so I had to put tape over the opening area to keep it shut and to prevent the batteries from falling out. The second one I bought to keep as an emergency light in another place did the same thing.

Want one bad

By: hikerbiker32 (109)
August 20, 2006

I just returned from a High Uintas backpack trip and I saw this headlamp in action. My brother had borrowed it for the trip. I have the tikka plus. Both were equally bright but then came the flip up red lens. It was the first time I had used red light. It was so nice to have him look at me and not be blinded by his headlamp. It kind of made me feel rude that I was blinding people on a regular basis. I will be making a purchase of this light or the tikka XP or both. I wish they made a headlamp that did everything. Right now I just grab the one that seems to meet the needs of that particular trip best. Another great lighting product from petzl.

Semi-serious flaw in product

By: dtree (1)
June 19, 2006

So as a wildlife biologist who does some work at night, I was excited to find a headlamp with a built in red filter - and this was the reason I chose this particular headlamp. But, there is a big problem with this light. The battery case pops open! With the slightest bump or jar and the batteries fall out. This is a serious problem when you are using this lamp out in the woods rather than just in your tent as a reading light. The solution is not very pretty and may fail over time - duck taping the latch closed. I hope Petzl fixes this flaw or includes the red filter on a larger and better lamp in the future.

A solid purchase

Headlamps are pretty simple affairs, so it takes a lot to stand out of the crowd. Fortunately, this one does. The push-button switch is much easier to use than the slider, and the flip-up red lens is a nice addition. The beam on the highest setting is more than adequate for a trail light, while the dimmer setting is good inside tents. It's also as durable as the other lights in Petzl's lineup. I haven't found a weakness with this headlamp.

This head lamp is very slick. I can't believe the light it puts out for the size of it. I also like the quick change red lens. I used it this spring during turkey season and was able to navigate around the woods in the pre-dawn hours without having some disruptive white light guide me and alert game. I also enjoyed the single strap. It makes it much easier to wear with a variety or lack of headwear. Other lights I have used have that top strap that doesn't fit will with certain hats.

I bought this headlamp for my husband, who is a dj and performs at many clubs. He loves to use the headlamp when he is spinning records, the light is so bright and true yet just a little amount as not to upset any of the other people at the club. He really likes the red cover that he can flip down for night vision, and what better place for the strobe setting than in a club? It is just perfect. I also bought one for my mother in law who is an avid crocheter, and finds it difficult to do her projects at night, she usually leans her living room lamp really close but of course nobody likes the smell of singed hair. This works perfect for her, the light is really bright and is such a true white that it makes it easy to tell colors apart. Love it ! Will definitely buy more.

I gave this to my husband because he does night demos of equipment for work and can wear this during set up. However, it is equally cool for other stuff. He uses it as a book light for bedtime reading. I cut his hair in the backyard (clippings can fall to the ground) and have used this for a nighttime haircut. It is comfortable and the light is very white and clear. I love it too.

December 4, 2005

I bought the Petzl TacTikka to replace my Tikka which was stolen during a home burglary :( I am pleased to say that as good as my regular Tikka was, the TacTikka is that much better - the red filter is great for all those middle of the night things I need to do—when you don't want to blind yourself with the bedside lamp. The headlamp overall is the best I've ever owned, bright enough, compact, durable, easy to use. You don't need to get one of those super bright head lamp cannons, just the TacTikka.

Petzl Tactikka + Headlamp

By: Jero (1)
November 21, 2005

Great little light. I work shows, onstage and offstage. I like the red filter. Mainly for backstage daily activities and hands free rigging work. I am able to use both hands while hanging with my harness. Reliable, not super bright, but bright enough to see in the dark. Comfortable head band, so you can use it for long periods of time. Long battery life too. I'd recommend it to any technician in the industry that needs a hands free light. However if you need a super bright light like a surefire or a scorpion, look for a xenon headlamp instead of LEDs.

Currently using this headlamp in Afghanistan. Can’t beat it, it’s the best headlamp I have ever used. I cut the straps and stuck it onto my gear. The white light is super bright, red is perfect for night operations, dimmer is a plus (don’t want to blind someone). Still burning strong and not a single problem.

This item is a must-have! I have gone camping twice since purchasing it, and have been amazed at its versatility both times. The flip down lens is an ingenious idea! I can switch from white to red light almost instantly. You may be concerned about the Headband not fitting, but at 7-5/8", I have a rather large noggin and it fits just fine. I am going backpacking next month and doubt I’ll survive without my TacTikka Plus!

April 10, 2005

This headlamp is awesome! I have been backpacking and outdoor adventure seeking over ten years and never found one light source other than this headlamp that works so well for what it does. Just a few weeks ago I took it down the Grand Canyon with me. Hiking the 12 mile Havasupai waterfall trail at night was a breeze with this headlamp. You can switch from three powers of light which conserves the batteries, which seem to last forever, and the red light lens option is great for around the tent or campsite. Super comfortable and light, would highly recommend to anyone.

Headlamp hit

By: mom of 3 (1)
January 2, 2005

This was a Christmas gift for my husband. He'd wanted an LED headlamp to replace the old-fashioned one he'd had for years. Since we sail, and looking at charts at night requires a red light to preserve night vision, I chose the tac version. Well, we haven't taken it sailing yet, but did take it along to a Texas ranch for vacation with the kids. My husband loved the lamp, and so did the girls (4, 2, and 2). They fought over who would wear it for our night-time excursions! So we were really glad for the adjustable power/brightness...

A must for your pilot flightbag

By: Petzl Tactikka Plus (1)
December 1, 2004

I use my Petzl Tactikka Plus in the cockpit since I do a great many hours of flying at night. The Tactikka is great because it frees up your hands and the red filter is essential for night flying to retain your night vision. The battery life with this light is phenomenal and it's quite comfortable to wear even while having an aviation headset on your head as well. I'm sure this isn't what the Tactikka was made for and I'm not the audience they market it to but this is a great tool for any pilot's flightbag.

Headlamps for Marines

By: Grandfather of a US Marine (1)
November 27, 2004

My young Grandson in Iraq noted that Marines could use Headlamps. "Power goes out all the time and most people bump around in the dark. Headlamps are a great piece of gear. The ones with the flip down red lens are the best...PETZI..we can use them in he field too.." I ordered 12 from you and they are on their way to Iraq. If he likes them, I plan to purchase about 50 for his Platoon. I could use a break on the price. Interested in a plug?

I use this light around the house, and when we do indigent medical care, including ob and gyn. Works well in a pinch. Am retiring most of my incandescent lights although they still are needed for farther throw when it comes to distance viewing. Some of the staff at the office have seen mine in action and it has become the hot item to give. Enjoyed the excellent, prompt customer service as well. When the next model comes out that is twice or more brighter I will upgrade again.

Thank you for sending me this great product. My squadron mates and I work on the night shift here in Iraq and these headlamps help us to complete the assigned mission. Unlike other bulb type headlamps, the Petzl LED headlamps are much brighter and the battery life is much longer thus reducing the need to pack extra batteries. Plus, the red flip-up lens is great for preserving our night vision. Thanks again.

The Petzl TacTikka and Tikka-Plus are a much improved version of the original Tikka headlamp. The four LED blubs are much brighter than the Tikka's 3 blub configuration. The angle adjustment is an added bonus and let's you direct the beam where you want it. The TacTikka's handy flip down red lense cover will help to mantain your night vision. If you need a bright lightweight headlamp this is the one for you.

If you are using a headlamp around others in close quarters (camping, below deck, etc.) this one is THE one. Other people I was with had trad. lamps with blazing white light and it was more than annoying- it was blinding and could, perhaps, make some situations dangerous. The ability and convenience of going "red" or "white" is huge. Pay the extra $5 for this- it is absolutely worth it.
