Phillips Environmental Waste Bag Kit - 12 Pack - 2007
The Phillips Environmental Products Waste Bag Kit can be used with the PETT (Portable Environmental Toilet)or by themselves while hiking, backpacking, rock climbing, kayaking, or in an emergency. These disposable waste bags are lined with a powder that will gel up to 60 oz. of waste and neutralize odor, keeping disposal clean and sanitary. As a result, the double-bag system made from puncture resistant material is virtually spill proof. Each Waste Bag Kit contains an outer zip-close disposal bag, waste bag preloaded with Pooh-Powder, toilet paper and a hand sanitizer. They are degradable and are approved for disposal in any garbage can.
Bottom Line: The sanitary solution for backcountry adventures or emergencies.

Good option when faced with an unpleasant task

I recently found myself the leader of a youth group of 12 people that was planning on spending a week in the a remote area of the backcountry. Faced with the prospect of 12 people spending 6 days in the semi-alpine environment, I was looking for better options than the age old 'cat hole'. We decided to give these bags a try and they worked out great. We actually got one of the PETT toilets as well. While Phillips Environmental says that these bags can be used multiple times, I wouldn't suggest it. However, they are easy to use and rather convenient. The powder in the bags will reduce the solid waste to a biologically safe, trash disposable gel. We packed the used bags in 5 gallon bucket with a lid that had been decorated with a 'toxic' symbol and easily disposed of the bags when the trip was over.

I recently purchased and used these bags. They provide some peace of mind for "back"country emergencies. They worked great in a "pinch" in the White Mountains. I have used similar products with disastrous results. A ruptured waste bag can ruin a sleeping bag and leave you the loneliest person in your group. I recommend having someone else carry the "pickle jar".
Do these really keep the smell in? Do they rip easily?

Compared to other bags, it does a little better job. However, it's still pretty aromatic around the bin we carried them in. I've never had a problem with them ripping.

Alright, so pooping in a bag is never a good time. However, if you have to do it get these.
P.S. They say good for multiple uses, but unless you have a industrial strength nose clip and a gas mask this is not advised.
better than without...

A lot of popular national parks (Grand Teton) are using similar products. While carrying your waste is never enjoyable, at least this helps with the smell and makes it less easy to rupture.
