Paha Que Promontory 8-person 3-season Tent

To call the Paha Que Promontory simply "big" would be a gross understatement. Calling it "ginourmous" would be more accurate. Linguistics aside, the eight-person Promontory is an impressive family camping tent. For comfort and ventilation, this tent features a mesh roof with optional rain fly and two large windows. For your sanity, you can divide this 120-square-foot behemoth into two six-by-ten-foot rooms, so that the shenanigans of your little hooligans are confined to their side of the tent. Each room has a door of its own, and one tremendous side door gives easy access to both sides of the tent. The Promontory also includes a removable gear loft and gear hammocks so you can keep things organized. For luxuriating outside the tent, the Promontory incorporates a built-in awning that lets you kick back and watch the sunset. Whether inside or out, you'll appreciate the bathtub floor that keeps the inside dry in anything short of a flood.

Bottom Line: A 120-square-foot vacation home in a bag.

This tent is great for a huge family or for a big party. My only complaint is the poles are pretty weak. One broke on me while I was setting it up. Thanks to great service a replacement pole was shipped to me in record time.

PARTY tent

This tent is HUGE!!! It's perfect for throwing a keg on one side and passing out on the other side. The only thing I didn't like about the tent is the poles are very flimsy and will break if you're not careful.

Portable Mansion

This tent was the envy of all 15 family members that we went camping with. The size was perfect for 6 people with a ton of gear to be stored inside. We also had two queen size air mattresses inside. The tent is so incredibly comfortable. I'm 6'0 tall and had absolutely no problem standing straight up in it. The air circulation throughout the tent is phenomenal. At night, we closed all of the flaps to avoid the large amounts of dew that all of our other family members got inside their tents. The inside was still comfortable (not stagnant at all). The tent itself is fairly easy to set up. The only problem I had was the same that most campers have with their tents.....The stakes are flimsy and easily bend when hammered into the ground. Buy the better quality stakes from your local camping supply store. Other than that, you couldn't ask for a bigger or more comfortable shelter for any climate/terrain.

Great Concept, Some Problems

I bought the Promontory after seeing my friend's Pamo Valley on a recent camping trip. I really liked the headroom, the gear loft, and the easy setup. The quality of construction impressed me as well. I had one nagging doubt - how could a tent with just two support poles hold up in the wind? I got my answer the first time I used the Promontory. Granted, it was a Colorado prairie thunderstorm with sustained winds of 60mph for over an hour—tortuous conditions. The Promontory was flattened and both poles broke, despite me using extra guy lines on the windward side. I didn't even have time to lay the tent down before the damage was done (attempting to avoid pole breakage) because the storm moved in so fast. The Paha Que customer service dept. was great, though. They offered to replace the arch poles for free or ship an entire set of poles for just the shipping fee of $16. They told me that realistically I should only expect the Promontory to withstand 40 mph winds. That seems reasonable to me, but if you camp in areas where the wind could be worse, be forewarned. One other problem: the beige/cream colored fabric panels on the sides of the tent are badly stained from dye transfer from the black floor pan - very unsightly, especially for such an expensive tent. I'll be calling this site in the next day or two to get an RMA # for a replacement. I'll stick with the Promontory because of all the benefits it offers. It's the ideal size for me and my 3 kids and one dog. We use cots for sleeping so it's easy to get crowded in a smaller 10' x 10' tent. I'll just have to anticipate such windy conditions better next time.

One Great Tent, from a Great company

This tent is so easy to set up, especially for a big tent. The first time I used it the wind blew it over and snapped a pole. My fault, not the tent since it was windy and I should have had more guy lines out. Anyway, Paha Que sent me a new pole for free even though their warranty excludes wind damage! (And they were super nice about it.) On my second trip we had a HUGE thunderstorm where we all huddled in my nice dry Paha Que because my buddy's Kelty was leaking!! Two thumbs up! I love this tent. The fact that I can stand up in it? Priceless.
