Outdoor Research Peruvian Hat

Lower the earflaps of this Outdoor Research Peruvian Hat and listen closely; do you hear the Andean panpipes beckoning? This cold-weather, winter hat —made from Gore WindStopper fleece — features a truncated top with long earflaps and a chin cord to pull the Peruvian snug when the wind tries to steal your heat away. The two-dimensional design with Elastane trim is very compact and durable; you can stuff this hat in your pocket when the sun warms you and have it handy again when the temperatures drop.

Bottom Line: You should trust a hat modeled after the native wears of one of the most mountainous and cold regions of South America.

Great Hat

By:

This hat is a great all around cold-weather hat. I use it under a heavier one when I am at high altitude(14k+ feet), or sleep in it when on cold winter approach nights. The windproofing is great and the neck slider is key in high winds. Also if you don't need the ears down you can fold them up and it wears just like a regular beanie... cool.

It weighs 2 ounces. Which is half a Clif bar. I'm curious about the circumstance where the weight of your hat is an issue, but to each his own. There you are.

Can't find a tab that gives sizes. Measured head and it is 23 but have had hard time fitting hats because was told my husband has an 'elongated head' (!). Tilley hat that fits well is 23 and 7/8 inches. Can you help with the appropriate size? Thanks. We're shopping up a storm here for a two week rafting trip down the Colorado.

Sorry that there is not a sizing chart on this page. You can see a complete one for Outdoor Research at: http://www.outdoorresearch.com/site/peruvian_hat.html

--- S - M - L
US 6 7/8 - 7 1/8 - 7 3/8

inches 21 5/8" 22 1/2" 23 1/4"

cm 55 57 59

Based on that chart I would suggest that you order a large. Keep in my mind that the Outdoor Research Peruvian Hat is made from Gore Windstopper Fleece which is not only guaranteed to do exactly what it implies (stop wind) but is - like all synthetic fabrics - also very stretchy.

Great. Warm and windproof, good to wear when on a kayak in Maine during April. Even in the water it's warm. Nice product.

Very warm and looks sleek

I bought two of these so my boyfriend and I could have matching hats. We both love them. They are very warm, a good fit and keep the wind out. They are not very bulky so on the really cold days, you could wear another hat over it. It also fits under my bike helmet. Great price too. It's hard to beat.

A MOUNTAINEER AND SKIERS DREAM

By:
November 21, 2007

This hat is great all year-round if you hate wind. I climb the Colorado 14ers and never leave home without this hat, even in the summer. The chin string is a must unless you like losing hats to 70 mph wind. Put your sunglass arms over the flaps for maximum wind protection (and from hearing the whining from your climbing partners, if need be). Just flip up the earflaps if you get too toasty. It is also thin enough to wear under your ski helmet on cold days. I'm on my 4th one. I keep losing them, or maybe my friends keep stealing them...hmmm....If you're serious about playing outside, OR is the way to go!

Excellent wind protection

By:

I wore this hat under a cycling helmet in 30 degree temps and found it very warm, breathable and comfortable. The windblocking material that extends to the earflaps keeps one's ears warm, but it also makes hearing a bit difficult the way they are insulated.
