Necky Manitou 14 Ultralite Kayak

What exactly is ultra light? In the case of Necky's Manitou 14 Ultralight Kayak, it refers to a fourteen-foot touring boat with a retractable skeg and a stiff, light hull that only weighs 42 pounds. Necky uses UltraLite Fiberglass and a cored construction to cut down on weight without compromising this kayak's durability. Unlike a plastic hull that creates friction in the water, the Manitou 14 glides through the water with ridiculous smoothness. Use the pull-wire to easily drop the skeg when the wind picks up. A supportive back band and thigh braces help keep you comfortable, while bow and stern hatches store rain gear and snacks.

Bottom Line: The Manitou is your new lightweight, easy-to-transport, smooth-riding touring vessel.

In what way would this be considered a challenge for a beginner?...

In what way would this be considered a challenge for a beginner? I'm curious because I was eying this boat. While I'm not rank a beginner, neither am I an expert. The light weight was appealing as was the fairly beamy width (say, as opposed the the Necky Eliza which I was also considering).

The Necky Manitou series is a great line for people who are not brand new to the sport but don't feel as though they need or want a super skinny boat. I have not paddled the ultralight 14 but I have paddled the polymer 14 and absolutely loved it. It's perfect for day trips. It is very stable and it tracks like a boat 2-3' longer than it actually is. You can't go wrong with the Manitou series, and now that they are making them as ultralight composite modles you really can't go wrong! Good luck and happy paddling!

Sorry, no--it's a single seat kayak that may be a little challenging for a beginner. Plus, you are both small people, so you might want to look for a smaller boat that has a cockpit that would fit you tighter/better.

My husband, 6' and 200lbs, wants a kayak for his birthday. We've owned several sailboats, but never a kayak. We are moving to the San Juan Island (Pacific NW) soon, so the kayak needs to be ocean-ready. My husband is one of those people who is naturally gifted in any athletics - 1st time he snow-skiied, he was on black diamond trails. He's sailed professionally. Any suggestions as to which kayak to purchase? Thank you so much!

There are so many kayaks out there--I swear it's a cause of "consumer stress"--that there is no one answer. I can give a suggestion that I have found helpful to follow: go to kayak stores, expos, demo days, etc., find knowledga-
ble people to talk to/with, and then start "test driving" their suggested boats. Take your time and have fun doing it! I shopped for a few months for my boat, and I kept testing it against other brands/models every chance I could. At the end of the day I kept coming back to that specific boat and I knew I had found the right one for me. I suggest your husband use the same process. The one thing NOT to do, though, especially if he is a very athletic man, is to buy a boat that he would tire of or "grow out of" quickly. This has nothing to do with price; it's about matching skill levels to the demands of the boat.
