Montrail Comp XCR Hiking Boot - Men's
Waterproof breathable Gore-Tex XCR lining and sticky-rubber Gryptonite GT outsoles make the Montrail Men's Comp XCR Hiking Boots an obvious choice for alpine approaches. These low-top boots also have an aggressive heel for extra traction on snowy descents. Montrail made these boots to excel in demanding locations like the North Cascades, Canadian Rockies, and Yosemite. The Comp XCR Boots have just the right amount of support for a weekend hiking trip or when you make the approach to Half Dome with a loaded haul bag.
Bottom Line: Take on steep, wet, rocky terrain with the Montrail Comp XCR Hiking Boots.

Size 11 boot has the width of a size 10. Tried breaking them in without success. 2 months and 450 miles later; still tight, rigid sole, slippery on wet ground

I wanted replacements for my "Casaul Hikers" as I call them. I wnated these shoes not so much used for hiking as for an all around rugged outdoorsy, "go to the park (lots of walking and exposure to the elements) and then dinner out". The problem I found is that the more rugged the shoe, the more garish the colors and the big honkin' soles.
My old pair, from Danner, were marketed as approach shoes, no longer exist, and the whole "approach" category seems to have changed or disappeared. The shoe company's would benefit by continuing to offer something between hikers and casual shoes.
These Comp XCR shoes are the closest I could find, and are very comfortable, and the "earth tones" color selection make them more acceptable to my conservative tastes. The soles are a little more than pronounced than I need, but hey, I was tired of looking and I believe they will last forever.
My only complaint, which is really just indicative of my Type "A" personality and I could stand to let go of, is that these shoes take more care and attention to put on and lace correctly. I was used to throwing my old pair on and be out the door. The extra cushioning and supportive lacing on these boots require a few seconds of tightening and adjusting before you have them fitting snug and comfortable. The advantage is that they will be comfortable all day, and you will not get blisters.
All in all, I would buy them again in a snap.
Hope this helps....!

They are fabulous and my son loves them and they did come pretty fast considering they came all the way from the States to Canada.

These things are made to last: both the sole and uppers may outlive you.
These make good casual or work use boots, but I don't like them as much for hiking or similar activities as they are a touch "clunky" and it's difficult to get a snug fit as the boot is fairly high volume. A different lacing system might help snug them down better as well.
As someone mentioned there is not a great deal of arch support in these, but this can be improved with a replacement insole, which can also help you fine-tune the fit.

A little background: I do motion picture lighting (lighting for feature films & commercials) my job requires me to be on my feet long hours on varied terrain. We shoot anywhere from mountaintops to muddy farms and corporate boardrooms. Most days I'm climbing some sort of structure to rig a light off of. I also skateboard (quickest form of transportation to and from set). So you see that I require a lot from my shoes.
The Montrail Comp XCR's are the only shoe that has lasted me more than three months! In fact I got TWO YEARS out of my first pair! I wore them everyday in rain, snow, mud, you name it... By the time the sole finally wore through from skating the top portion of the shoe still didn't have the typical blow-outs of other shoes. I tried having them re-soled, but unfortunately that was a waste of money as the new soles didn't last more than a month.
Thus I needed a new pair of shoes but could no longer find The Montrail Comp XCR's at any of my local stores. I did a little research online and found the Gramont XCR to be alot of magazine editors "top pick". What a joke! They lasted me three months... I blew holes in the soles at the heels and in the sides of the toe box.
Luckily I had a little time off and used Google product search and ended up at Backcountry.com
I bought two pairs just in case Montrail is no longer making the Comp XCR two years from now when I needed my next pair...
By the way the Comp XCR's are super comfortable all day long. The rubber is great for scrambling up the sides of buildings (or bouldering if you have the chance) They're super waterproof too, I've stood in spring snow all day and been completely dry (also crossed the occasional stream while hiking).
So, in conclusion, if you tend to be hard on your shoes and can stand wearing the same shoe two years from now, buy the Montrail Comp XCR. If you're not hard on your shoes buy the Montrail Comp XCR and it will probably last a lifetime..Happy hiking...

Tough boot. Heavier than I thought (equal to the weight of my backpacking boots). Tread is iffy on wet rocks. I've been rough on these boots and they still look new.

Tough as nails, heavy duty, and heavy, and built to last. Looks great, very rigid, roomy toe box, but no arch support. Length is to size for a snug fit but very narrow. Returned and went with Salomon extend mid XCR for width and cushioning for longer hikes based on on-line chat help. Excellent help and customer service for return.
