Montrail Hardrock Trail Running Shoe - Womens

The Montrail Hardrock, inspired by the Hardrock 100 ultra race, is built for the rough, rocky terrain of its namesake. Providing the utmost stability and traction, protection doesn't sacrifice agility, flexibility or weight. It's versatile enough for quick runs or long hikes thanks to its platform design. Aggressive lugs let you plow through dirt and mud with traction. With a wider midsole and molded protection plate—sculpted for flexibility during forward motion—it protects the bottom of your foot from bruising. The firm heel counter holds you steady. Designed with a metatarsal gel pad for cushion in the forefoot, and a high-density medial post, Hard Rock helps prevent pronation (and turned ankles). Webbing strips and synthetic overlays in the upper provide killer support. Using an IntegraFit™ last, these shoes feel like they're custom made. Montrail even used style cleverly with embossing that doubles as abrasion protection so they last longer.

Bottom Line: Take on the roughest trails with Montrail Hardrock Running Shoes.

Great but could be better

By:

These shoes are super supportive and can trek pretty much everywhere. I wear them running trails and roads and they are very stable and light. They are a little stiff until broken in. I have wide feet and these shoes run a little small and have given me some blisters on my outer toes. I still love them! They run about a 1/2 size small.

Great All Around Shoe!

By:
August 14, 2008

These shoes are amazing!! They are very sturdy and stable but do not feel bulky or heavy. They did not require any significant break in time and are versatile enough to accommodate my city runs and hiking/trail adventures. They are well ventilated so my feet do not get overly hot or sweaty. One negative I've noticed so far is that the lace construction is not that durable. The loops holding the upper laces started to fray almost right away and this does concern me for the life of the shoe but so far has not caused any problems and everything is still in tact. Overall, I highly recommend them!

good and bad.

By:
June 26, 2008

I've only run a few times in them, so they are not "broken in", but I've found with my other running shoes that they don't really need much breaking in. I ordered a half-size up, which I tend to do with all my running shoes. They have nice tread for rocky trails. They feel stable and cushiony. But the balls of my feet get sore after running for say, 20-30 minutes. It's worse on my longer foot, which makes me wonder if I should have ordered a full size up instead. It almost feels like the shoe is too narrow for me, but I haven't quite pinned it down. I don't have wide feet that I am aware of. It's a little disappointing because these shoes are nice otherwise but I'll probably have to use them for short runs unless I can find a better insole that helps the situation or new lacing style that eases pressure.

These run 1/2 size small!

By:
May 17, 2008

I do not size up a 1/2 size in my running shoes, so I just ordered these shoes in a 7.5 (where I usually wear a 7) & they fit great. Compared to 2 other pairs of 'trail runners' I have these have the beefiest sole-I can barely feel the sharp, pointy rocks we have here in UT when going downhill. (Since Montrail was purchased by Columbia these shoes haven't changed in the way they fit compared to some other Montrail models.)

Montrail's Rule.

By:
October 13, 2007

You can never go wrong with a Montrail shoe. Period. This running shoe is right up there. Not the widest toe-box in a shoe but works good for my small but wide foot.

These trail runners ROCK!!!

By:
September 26, 2007

These are incredibly good trail running shoes. We use them at the fitness center and walking around our town/city, which features uneven pavement, obstacles, etc. They are VERY supportive and are long lasting. We have bought several pairs of these over the years and haven't found any other shoe that is better for us/our needs/our use.

Very good shoes!

By:
August 13, 2007

The shoes feel true to size, light and comfortable. I like the colors also because it isn't stark white or some odd electric colors that stand out too much. I've worn the shoes on my vacation and it looked good with almost all outfits.

Disappointed

By:
May 5, 2007

I like the stability of this shoe for trails but my feet become incredibly sore shortly after I begin my exercise. I haven't been able to figure out what the problem is. Has anyone else had the same experience?

The best trail running shoe...

By:
March 27, 2007

...I've ever owned. Period. Not only is this shoe supportive on the arch and ankles, but it is also super lightweight for its class and has great traction. I used to have problems with ankle-rolling, but with these shoes I'm able to run confidently over mud, gravel, water, even rocky downhill slopes. My only complaint was that I had to order a 1/2 size up from my normal shoe size. If you are like me and waver between a half size, order a half size up from your normal largest size.

watch your sizing, otherwise perfect

By:
March 1, 2007

This is my second pair of Montrails. I wear a size 9 in the Hurricane Ridge model and I thought I'd also fit a size 9 in this (the Hardrock) model. But my toes are rubbing on the nose and I'll need to exchange for a half-size larger. I normally wear a 8.5 shoe, but buy 9 running shoes pretty consistently. This shoe has the same overall shape that the Hurricane ridge has, although it feels more cushioned, especially in the ball and in the heel. I think I'll be pleased with a half size larger, and I think anyone else who has a narrow heel who needs a stable trail running shoe will too. Try to try these shoes on somewhere before ordering, if you have the time, to get your perfect fit ;)

Thruhiker's dream shoe

By:
February 4, 2007

I would say over half of the brave men and women who tried to hike the 2,600 mile Pacific Crest Trail from Mexico to Canada wore this shoe. I went through only 4 pairs in 2,600 miles. One pair even lasted about 800+ miles. I was carrying about 30 pounds and walking about 20-25 miles a day. Very supportive, but has a narrow heel cup. Awesome shoes.

Ready for Races

By:
October 17, 2005

I wore these shoes straight from the box for the 175-mile Wasatch Back Relay. Montrail did an outstanding job balancing comfort with stability. I have other shoes that are lighter but I find myself choosing these shoes every time; even for road running. I really like the hard toe bumper and felt no more pain when I kick those trail ruts. They are holding up well after a long summer of running.

my new trail runners!

By:
July 11, 2005

Just got these a couple weeks ago and love them. Went for a nice long hike and they were perfect. It was all trail, some single track smooth dirt then some scrambling up some pretty steep terrain and they ruled it! I love that these are pretty stiff for how comfy they are. I feel really solid and stable in these shoes. The mesh keeps them a cool. I had to cross the river in 'em and it really didn't take long for them to dry out. I'll for sure buy these when the new ones wear out!

montrailr are the best

By:
July 11, 2005

These are excellent sneaks. Without a doubt the best that I have owned. Montrail has the best fit with the most support. I train and run trail races in these. For myself and others it seems that people consistently need 1/2 size larger than what they normally wear.

Buy this shoe if you love your feet

By:

I just ran a 10k trail race at Snow Basin in these. I love the plate protection from jagged rocks. These make you the perfect trail runner from the ankles down.

Montrail Hardrock running shoes -good deal!

By:
April 25, 2005

Your website is great, and I received my order fast. I bought these shoes on recommendation from a woman runner. This is the first pair of athletic shoes/boots I ever bought that fit my feet, read "no blisters and no pain", and I can walk through sand washes, dirt and gravel and never has one bit of sand gotten in my shoes! My feet are so happy I even wear them to work.

hardrocks are hard

By:
September 12, 2004

I trail run and found these shoes to be very hard, you can't feel the trail at all. The worst part though is the hard plastic band on the back of the heal that creates blisters/bruises! Both of my heals bruised after running for a couple of hours. A running partner of mine had the same problem and had to send hers back too.

betty's best shoes ever

These are without a doubt the most comfortable shoes that I have ever owned. They perform great on rocky trails as I am usually running in the San Juan Mountains of Colorado.
