How waterprof is this jacket?

The coduit outer shell is very waterproof although I wouldn't put it in the category of goretex. I have several pieces of gear with conduit and it works pretty well. If you're looking for something extremely waterproof I'd actually check out the backcountry.com Stoic jacket. It's an absolute piece of art! Great jacket.-------------------------------------------The Dado Jacket is completely waterproof. It is made with our Conduit laminate and then taped on the inside. On top of that, it is also insulated with Primaloft. The Stoic Jacket is made with Event and not GoreTex and is a shell. Also, Event will not be as waterproof as Gore, nor as durable, but will provide slightly more breathablility when tested in a lab. When used outside in the real world all of these different fabrics and jackets will perform to your liking. Cheers!

i just got back from Jay Peak VT. the Dado worked great, the temps 43 base 30 summit. i was warm all day with only a light base layer. rain and snow throughout day and i was dry. the jacket even kept the wind out on the famous flyer quad! lots of pockets, even had room for a video cam in an internal pocket. snow skirt kept the slush out during falls. i think i am going to buy a second one!

I bought the MH Dado jacket because I wanted an insulated waterproof jacket with technical features for a reasonable (i.e. non-Arcteryx level) price. I was initially pleased, but after wearing it for only 4 days of moderately aggressive in-bounds skiing, the stitching on the chin guard started fraying and the stitching on the zippers began to unravel. I ordered a replacement (Backcountry was fantastic in handling this), and I noticed that some of the stitching in those same places was a little frayed to begin with, even before being used. I emailed the manufacturer to see if others had reported similar defects, and they said no. Backcountry also indicated that no one else had reported problems. I subsequently saw this jacket in a retail store, and again noted that the stitching on the zippers in particular had a frayed, unfinished sort of look. This is how my original jacket started out before unraveling with more use. While none of the flaws noted are fatal, the overall craftsmanship is less than expected for a $270 jacket from MH. I subsequently found the now-discontinued MH Torque jacket for 50% off on another website. It has essentially all the same features, with a few exceptions: hood not insulated, different color schemes, storm-closure on front zipper, and slightly different detailing, including different zipper materials. The craftsmanship appears better.

I can recommend the Dado jacket only with hesitation. The features are nice, and the jacket is warm but breathable for snowsports. The specs suggest that the seams are not taped, but they feel taped to me and a person at another store thought so as well; you'll have to be the judge (an email to MH about his issue was unanswered). The only difference between this and the Mortise is that the Mortise has fleece in the body, and primaloft in the sleeves, whereas this is primaloft throughout.

I recommend Backcountry wholeheartedly; they have been very helpful throughout this process.

Primaloft is much warmer that fleece. It is advertised as having the same properties and insulation as down, but uses far less material, (puffiness), to achieve the same warmth as down. Having used Primaloft, I can say it is great stuff.

They are similar jackets. The Dado is insulated with primaloft and the Mortise is insulated with fleece in the body and then primaloft in the sleeves. Otherwise, I think you will find the performance to be similar. Hope this helps.

So, the Dado Jacket is insulated with Primaloft PL One insulation throughout the whole jacket. The Mortise is insulated with fleece in the body and then Primaloft PL one in the sleeves. They both use the Conduit laminate that makes them waterproof and breathable. Hope this helps!

According to Mountain Hardwear it has "One handed hood, waist and hem drawcords." Most synthetic insulation jackets are thinner than their puffy down jacket counterparts. Perhaps a good example is Mountain Hardwear's Compressor jacket, which has the same Primaloft One insulation and I've tried on and wasn't bulky at all. I would assume they wouldn't leave that one trim and totally bulk out this jacket. If you are really looking for a trim fit I would suggest going with more of a shell without insulation and layering underneath with low profile garments like synthetics or even better--merino wool.
