Mountain Hardwear Downtown Down Coat - Women's

Cold temps in the city become a laughing matter when you have the 650-fill insulated Mountain Hardwear Women’s Downdown Down Coat at the ready. The insulated, removable hood traps warmth around your head, through which most of your body heat tries to vamoose. Nestle into the Downtown Coat's soft Velbora Raschel lining and steer your sled toward that pillow of powder, or cram this down jacket into its stuff sack and throw it into your ski pack for a chilly day on the slopes. The contoured, feminine cut prevents that jet-puffed 'mallow look, and the extended length covers you with modern style for downtown day trips.

Bottom Line: Uptown style and low-temp warmth.

Fantastic coat

This coat is slim, gorgeous on, and warm. What else do you need? Plus the medium is a genuine medium. The fit is much more standard and well suited to athletic builds. I returned the North Face Arctic for this coat and I couldn't be more pleased.

Of course this coat will keep you very warm. However, everyone is different. Do you get cold easily? Will you have many layers underneath or will you just have a little dress on? Will there be crazy wind, snow, or rain? This coat is for very cold weather, not for rain.

Is this coat waterproof? I am guessing not but i just wanted to make sure. Is waterproof down worth it? Does an extra layer add bulk?

It's actually only water resistant. So probably not going to do what you want it too.

If this has 650-fill, would it not be warmer than a 550-fill?...

If this has 650-fill, would it not be warmer than a 550-fill? This jacket has been recommended for casual winter wear and I saw a 550-fill coat for back-country, alpine use. What gives?

It's recommended for casual winter wear over alpine stuff because it's long coat, impractical to actually DO stuff in. It is warmer (for the weight at least) than 550 fill, but a jacket that comes to the knees can't be hiked in or skiied in or cooked in or camped in, thus casual.
----------------------
The only thing that is different between 550, 650, or even 850 fill down is the amount of space (volume) it takes up for its given weight. So, higher the number the lighter the weight if all other things are the same-fabric, zippers, jacket design, etc. It has nothing to do with warmth. Another way to think of it- if you have the exact same jacket and you use either 550 or 800... the 800 fill jacket would be a hair lighter than the jacket made with 550 and a bit more expensive. Again, nothing to do with warmth. Both very warm... hope this helps.

Here is a link to our "care and feeding" page for down garments on the Mountain Hardwear site. Hope this helps:

Just copy and paste it into your browser window because I do not think the link will be active.
