Mountain Hardwear Phantom Sleeping Bag: 45 Degree Down

The Mountain Hardwear Phantom 45 Down Sleeping Bag is an ultralight but full-featured summer bag for members of the Light is Right Club. With its alpine mummy cut, the Phantom maximizes warmth with minimum bulk. A face gasket and tailored hood trap heat around your head, because 45 degrees can feel mighty chilly sometimes. Five-inch baffle spacing keeps the 800-fill down insulation evenly distributed for maximum thermal efficiency, and single-handed drawcords make adjustments simple.

Bottom Line: Mountain Hardwear made the Phantom 45-Degree Sleeping Bag for weight-obsessed backcountry travelers.

Light and awesome

This bag is great if you want to keep things super light and compact, but also value quality and performance. This bag is great, being that it is smaller than a Nalgene bottle and super light. I have also found that the temperature rating is slightly conservative by about 5-10 degrees. I have even slept in it when the temp dropped in the low 20's, wearing only base layers and a Mont Bell ultralight down jacket inside.

My Mac Pac Microlite tent suffers from bad condensation will the shell of this bag repel a bit of moisture

This bag has the same 15 Denier fabric as the Mountain Hardwear Phantom down jackets. It is DWR coated, but such a light fabric will wet through eventually. For a waterproof bag, check out the Mountain Hardwear Spirit SL Sleeping Bag.

Try to ventilate your tent better to minimize condensation. The previous statement is correct. This sleeping bag is very thin & any moisture could compromise it's ability to insulate properly.

Mountain Hardwear Phantom 45 degree bag

By:

This bag is very light, compacts smaller than an ultralight Therm-a-Rest, and kept me plenty warm on 40 degree nights on the South Rim of the Grand Canyon. If you just can't handle dropping another $300 on another Western Mountaineering or Marmot Atom, the Phantom 45 is the only choice around.

great for lihtweight adventuring

This pack is perfect lightweight adventure racing gear. Packs about 1/3 the size of the larger 32F rated Phantom. While I only utilized it in conditions down to 50F it kept me abundantly warm in outdoor and windy conditions. Would probably do the job to 5-10 degrees below the 45F rating if properly closed. Good cushioning as well. Slept on it for 7 days without a pad underneath on packed sand/semi rocky desert conditions.
