Mountain Hardwear Monkey Man Fleece Zip T - Long-Sleeve - Men's
Itchy sweaters and bulky fleece, be gone. The Mountain Hardwear Men's Monkey Man Zip T feels plush, warm, and soft as silk. Wear this pullover for snag-free layering and welcomed warmth while skiing, climbing, or hiking. This top's shaggy Monkey Phur fleece fabric has a super high warmth-to-weight ratio, so it insulates surprisingly well for weighing so little and compressing so small. If you get too hot on that boulder problem, bust open the quarter-zip and cool off. More open knit than most fleece, the Monkey Man fleece doesn't block harsh winds, but under a weatherproof shell it makes a layering system that performs like no other.
Bottom Line: For breathability and warmth in a small package, pull on the Mountain Hardwear Monkey Man Zip T.

This is going to be a good later for those single-digit and negative temp conditions but in warmer weather you might want to try a thinner layer that can still keep you warm (try some icebreaker stuff. Which is not to say, the MonkeyMan will be good layering as well as good by itself.

Not really. It's newer, but it's the same material and has less pockets (no hand pockets).

Does anyone know if this would fit under the MH Windstopper? Can anyone recommend a good base layer?

It will be snug but it should fit. The Windstopper Tech Jacket is cut a little bit wider that this fleece but it will still be a little snug. If you are looking for a warm and form fitting base layer try any of the Power Stretch from Mountain Hardwear. Hope this helps...
