Mountain Hardwear Sub Zero Down Vest - Men's

The Mountain Hardwear Sub Zero Down Vest gives backcountry skiers and alpine climbers the core warmth they need on the mountain or simply around town. At barely over a pound, this puffy vest is deceptively light, and it fits into a small included stuff sack—cram it in a jacket pocket for emergency warmth. One-handed hem drawcords make this 650-fill down vest a snap to adjust on the fly, and fleece-lined hand pockets keep your fingers from turning blue and falling off.

Bottom Line: Vested interest in your warmth.

Decent but not great

First off I recommend ordering a size smaller than your other Mountain Hardware gear. Good: Nice looking jacket, pockets are great and very comfortable. Arm holes were perfect. Various cords you can tighten make it good at blocking the wind. Bad: My wife has the similarly priced North Face Nuptse Down vest which to be frank is much nicer. As stated in some other reviews this vest does lose feathers and the surface material is much thinner than the North Face. Personally for me the shoulders were too wide and the vest just and inch or two shorter than I would like.

Great warmth and way smaller than a full down jacket.

I bought this vest in preparation for a trip to the Andes where it will consistently be below freezing, but I will need to remain as lightweight as possible. I have taken it camping twice to test it out and it has worked like a charm. It kept my core very warm the whole time we were setting up camp and hanging out before bed. It was not nearly cold enough to comfortably wear this vest while I was hiking, but it compresses down very well into the accompanying stuff sack.

Light and small enough to toss in the backpack without a second thought. Does what its suppose to do, meaning keep you super warm. This and a light shell will get you through ALOT of weather conditions. Great for around the campfire. Im confident in its durability. With dual purpose as my pillow at night it's just hard to go wrong.

Over All Nice But...

The Good: The vest looks great and feels great. I am 5'10" and fairly thin. I would normally have bought a Med but I wanted something a bit more slimming that would fit under other layers so I got the small. The fit is very nice and the length comes down to my belt but I would have appreciated another inch in length (I did get the small though so no points off there). The arm holes are a great fit and don't let much air out. The pockets are many and feel great. The primary hand pockets are a warm slightly fuzzy material. The Lacking: I was really expecting a reversible self packing pocket in the vest so that you could pack the thing into its self. It comes with a separate stuff sack but who wants to carry that around? Down leaks out of my vest at a slow but regular rate over time since it was taken out of the packaging. I also worry about the durability of the outer shell fabric. Maybe I am paranoid because it already has down leaking from it but every little branch, shrub, or pricker that I rub against while in the woods just has me thinking about increasing that rate of down loss. It seems like it wouldn't take much to put a small hole in the shell and then I just imagine down continually leaking from its new exit point. Over all I recommend the vest because it feels great. I am going to spray some water proofing on the shoulders and upper back and it will work great as a base layer or with a long thermal shirt on cooler days.

The cut on this vest is great, the fit around the arms is nice and snug and keeps the cold air out. All the pockets are another plus. Great purchase.

I used to work in an outdoor store in the UK where this vest retailed for 150 pounds, which is about 300 dollars. I got a great deal here, and I wear the vest under a thin shell when I am at work with ski school. Its superbly warm and made with all the quality you would expect from Mountain Hardware. I would recommend this vest to anyone who has trouble keeping warm modern uninsulated shells.

Mountain Hardwear Sub Zero Down Vest - Men's

Great Vest!! I'm not disapointed at all with the quality of this Mountain Hardwear product. The vest keeps me very warm when out belaying into these late months and doing pretty much everything outdoors. The pockets are very warm too. I can't even put my hands in them if its above 45 degrees out. It's just too warm and my hands start to sweat. It will not disappoint if your in the market for a quality down vest!! My chest size is about a 38-40 and I went for the large and it fits great. I was going to get the medium but decided to get the larger.

I took this vest on a recent backpacking trip in Utah canyons. It packs light and compact, and does its job in the cold evenings when needed. High quality vest.

Good Stuff!

This vest does the job. Worn under a proper outer shell, it'll give you enough warmth to face the worst conditions on the mountain, and its portability is a big bonus (it fits in a small pouch). Downsides: After a couple weeks of use, it seems to lose a few feathers, and this coulour shows the dirt rapidly! Overall, love it!

Worth The $$$

I've had this vest for over a year now, and use it as my daily insulator underneath my lightweight Marmot jacket and it works great. I work in North and South Dakota and know what works and what doesn't, and believe me, this works! A GREAT base layer in the winter, and warm enough by itself in spring and fall. Pockets are lined with soft flannel. Snug fit around the arms and waist keeps cold air and wind out and your body heat in. Wind does not get through! Packable to the size of a small football (comes with it's own storage bag that you can keep in the inside pocket). The only reason why I give it a 4 and not 5 is that it has started to leak it's down feathers through the seams around the armpits and shoulders, and they stick to my flannel lined Marmot jacket, so I know how much down I've lost over the year (it's not much, but I thought I'd say that it does leak some over time). But well worth the price, if I lost mine I would definitely buy another one without hesitation or question.

You can buy a more expensive vest, but I'm fairly certain that you won't get this much quality for the price. I found the fit, weight, and pocket placement perfect for my use, and the vest is stylish. I chose black, and I'm very happy with the purchase. I look forward to enjoying it for many years to come.

The Sub Zero is phenomenal. It's like wearing a portable sauna for your core. I can't imagine wearing it above 50 degrees, but January in New Hampshire while ice climbing would be fantastic. It's light, comfy, and manufactured well. I don't feel like it's going to break when playing hard in the outdoors.

Time to get warm!

I've had my Sub Zero Vest for almost a year now, and it is an awesome piece of clothing. Several adjustable draw cords help with keeping cold air out. It fits into its own stuff sack and is very light. If you need a down vest that is reliable and light, this is the one.
