Mountain Hardwear Monkey Man Jacket - Men's

The Mountain Hardwear Monkey Man jacket is an absolute MUST for winter backcountry enthusiasts, and a great-looking alternative to the run-of-the-mill fleece jackets you see everyday. In fact, it's one of the most unique, technical and attractive fleeces around. Made with Polartec Thermal Pro High Loft, the Monkey Man's fleece, affectionately known as Monkey Phur, is more plush and shaggy than the common standard. It makes you warm just looking at it. That said, the Monkey Man is much lighter than comparable fleece jackets, which brings us to its technical side. It's perfect for those concerned with insulating efficiency, i.e., most warmth per weight, and compressibility (packs well). This jacket is super breathable, so when you're skinning up the mountain quickly on a cold, bluebird day, you won't overheat and have to shed layers. The Monkey Man's great breathability, and extremely light weight prompted Everest guru, Ed Viesturs, to bring a Monkey Man Jacket on his last Annapurna trip.

Bottom Line: The Monkey Man Jacket-like a big, warm, friendly monkey. Without the teeth. Or the smell.

Simply Awesome

By:
March 1, 2008

I was at the grocery store in my monkey man the other day when the one cashier said to the other, "Pat down his jacket." I thought they were accusing me of shoplifting, but the cashier just stuck her arm out and stroked the phur on the arm of the jacket and said, "Ooohh, this must be the comfiest jacket ever!" I wear mine basically everywhere, and besides the fact that it's cut a little short for my torso length (6'3"), I can find no faults. Another great product from MH.

Amazing Jacket

By:
November 19, 2007

Super soft, super warm, the jacket looks good, is very breathable and is feels like a second skin. But softer than your own skin. Very breathable, works great as both a wear-around jacket and an insulating layer. Highly recommended.

Phur is real

By:
October 18, 2007

This jacket is amazing. Don't let the reviews of it being too short or too tight turn you off. It was designed to fit that way. I also have a Mountain Hardwear Sub Zero jacket and the two seem to go together like two pieces of a puzzle. Very warm. Very cool looking. Thanks for the best prices on the web as well.

Monkey lost its fur

By:
October 3, 2007

Well I ordered a MonkeyMan jacket (with its trademark long fur) to replace a treasured and lost MonkeyMan jacket I have had for years... and when it arrived I was disappointed to see that the model has changed (without this site telling me) and it was a fur-less Monkey! That's no good... it's just the same as any number of other similar jackets now... so I have returned it. I am sure that it performs just as well as my old one.. but somehow a furless Monkey doesn't cut it.

Smaller than expected.

By:
September 19, 2007

Sleeves and shoulders were a normal size large, but the body fit very snugly. To go any larger though would have been too long in the arms. Very soft warm jacket but wrong fit for me.

Love Mountain Hardware

By:
August 28, 2007

What else needs to be said? The Mountain Hardware company makes an incredible line of adventure wear and this fleece follows right in line with all the other gear I've purchased from this company mostly through the great deals I get at Backcountry.com. You will melt into this fleece unlike any other.

Sapphire Color is very purple

By:
July 24, 2007

My computer screen made this jacket look fairly blue with some light purple. When I received it I can only describe the Sapphire color as Grape Smuckers jelly, Barney the dinosaur, purple. You may like that color but it's not for me. Great jacket, nice fleece and good quality. Just wanted to let everyone know about this particular color.

warm and feels like a teddy bear

By:
June 7, 2007

The Monkey Man jacket has become one of my favorite items to wear while outside, and that means everything outside of my house! I started to wear the jacket just on backpacking and climbing trips and now I hardly want to wear anything else. Incredibly warm, holds quite a bit of wind and even a bit of rain. Looking forward to test it during the winter. The chest pocket holds cellphone and other things you wanna have close to you and the other pockets hold your hands warm. All in all - great Jacket!!!

Wow - when I got my Monkey Phur I was stoked because of all the reviews that I read and finally I got my own along with my wife. Let me say this garment is the best I have ever owned and warm warm warm. I get repeated complements on it as well. Thanks from Alaska

tight fit

By:
February 26, 2007

Tried both the medium and large. Both were tight in the armpits and chest. This jacket seems to be made for very slim upper body type. I'm usually right between medium and large depending on whose gear it is. (5'11" 170lbs) and don't usually have a problem with Mountain Hardwear gear, but this particular one seems different. BC was great about taking them both back. In the end I went with the Patagonia R4.

Does exactly what its for

By:
February 26, 2007

I've had this jacket for while now and is the warmest fleece I've ever owned - great winter layering and obviously like the description says, wind cuts right through it, though even with a wind shell it retains a lot of heat. Both Arc'Teryx and Patagonia make something similar using Thermal Pro, but I found this jacket to be the least expensive for the same material (which is what matters).

A "must have"

By:
December 15, 2006

This fleece is just fantastic and as warm as I expected. As the winter season started slowly in Europe this year, I tested it in Lapponia during a typical north-wind day. Temperature was around -10°C and I could go out with just a thin thermal shirt (ODLO) and my new MH Monkey!

Who will like to be a monkey??

By:
November 20, 2006

ME! This jacket is perfect! The arm-length is perfect, the material feels so great, soft and smoothly. The jacket just follows the body so you doesn't feel your are wearing it - besides the heat to your body. It's really warm, but still it allows your body to breath. It's a perfect combination as an inner-layer for a shell-jacket, as the monkey jacket isn't wind/water resistant. So just go MONKEY-CRAZY!

Mountain Hardwear Monkey Man Jacket - Men's

By:
November 15, 2006

I like to travel in extreme conditions. You will understand that there is no place for minor design imperfection. The MonkeyFurrrr Jacket is well built and has a very useful pocket in front of the heart. However, it main flaw resides in the fact that there is no waist string provide an adjusted fit. This would cause snow to be blown up the jacket and an important amount of heat loss. As you may expect, I had to spend an extra cash have a tightening string added by professionals. For the others, hike safely, Never Never Man.

Most comfortable fleece i've ever tried - looks and fits great (in my experience, size up because sizes fit smaller/more snug than i expected). Surprisingly lightweight. I wish it had pit zips for warm days. Not much experience yet in active situations. My girlfriend keeps stealing mine too.

My Favorite Jacket

By:
October 27, 2006

I am very happy with my Monkey Man jacket. Since I bought it, the temperature has been steadily dropping and I haven't really noticed. Also, it draws a lot of attention. As long as you don't mind women petting you and telling you how soft you are, you'll love this jacket.

Good Jacket

By:
May 10, 2006

The Monkey Man jacket is soft, furry, warm, and comfortable. Moreover, it makes you look like a teddy bear (I already do), so expect some extemporaneous hugs from women, even when you are over 50 (and this is not a bad thing!) The only problem, it doesn't pack that well, especially versus a down sweater. However, I took one on a recent ski mountaineering trip in Switzerland, and it served me very well!

Excellent jacket. Very versatile, can be worn outside comfortably in temps down to the 30's, yet it's very breathable so you can leave it on and be cozy when you come inside. Fits true to size. Not as warm as a Denali but much more versatile and you won't look like everyone else.

A good friend of mine recommended your Monkey Man jacket to me. He's in the search and rescue with the sheriff's department and they all wear your gear. I love the jacket, I wear it under a Gore-Tex shell while fishing, it's very comfortable and warm. I've since bought a hat and gloves and love all your products. Thanks

Depends what you are using it for

By:
January 27, 2006

This is not a durable jacket if you wear it alone. The outside gets kind of messed up (the elbows get worn down), because the (hairs) are so long. It is a really snug fit around the torso. I think they made this to breathable, because the wind gets through it too easily. They should have made it like the Patagonia R2 which has short hairs to block the wind, and long hairs to have more loft. The R2 is still breaths great, and because of it being so breathable it will not get to warm if you wear it alone. I wear it around the house a lot and I don't get too hot. Sometimes it gets too hot under the arms. They should have put less insulation there like the Patagonia R2-R4's. But if you use it under a shell it is a good fleece. It is also super lightweight which is good, and it does turn heads. It looks great! I would recommend Patagonia’s R2, which I love, or R3 or R4.

don't go Ape over monkey man!

By:
January 19, 2006

It’s light, comfortable, and the snug fit around the wrists is a bonus when you need your arms. I love the style. Realistically, the product is overpriced. The fabric I don’t value at more than $5 per meter, and the few threads that I had to cut or remove from the tailored sleeves probably means that it was made in a sweat shop. I think for everyone to get their share of the profit it should be retailed at around $80.

Monkey Phur

By:
January 18, 2006

I love my Monkey Phur! It's lighter, more comfortable and warmer than my old standby and former favorite—Patagonia Synchilla in 300 weight. The Phur does not pill and the loft does not get matted down. It's super soft and very comfortable. Extremely breathable so it's best suited to wear under a waterproof shell in harsh outdoor environment. The fit is tapered without bulk. The stretch panels on the sleeves make them less bulky as well. The look is great and I get lots of compliments. My wife always tries to steal it from me.

By:
January 2, 2006

Great mid-layer fleece, good for an outer layer if no cold winds are present. It wicks away moisture and dries quickly. It performs well and looks good (it helps to look a little different from all the other products out there).

Toasty warm for skiing!

By:
January 2, 2006

I wear this under the Mountain Hardwear Manticore softshell, along with a light base layer, and I'm toasty warm and comfortable all day! As another post said, definitely wear a wicking layer under this, as you will sweat. The jacket is very lightweight, and very warm as well. They seem to size a little small. I wear a medium in almost everything, and I had to get a large of this as I couldn't zip it up all the way. Otherwise, order this thing!

Fuzzy Jacket

By:
November 29, 2005

This jacket looks unique, feels awesome against the skin, and when used under a shell, is extremely warm. I actually backpacked in it for a couple of hours during the fall when all I had was it and a t-shirt. I sweated of course. I sweated right through my wicking t-shirt, and when I took off my jacket I felt the inside of it and found little to no moisture. Dries quickly and wicks itself.

Monkey Magic

By:
November 29, 2005

This is the best fleece I've ever owned. Excellent quality construction, typical of the brand, and quite good looking. Any kind of wind blows straight through the relatively open weave, so it's great for ventilation,. But it needs to be accompanied by additional layering in windier/colder conditions. Fit is snug around the torso.

My Monkey Man pile jacket just survived a week-long trip to the Colorado San Juan National Forest. I consider the jacket the perfect compliment to a shell jacket. Its loft is excellent and the little patches of stretch material are in just the right places to not encumber the jacket.

Of all of the fleece jackets that I have worn, Mountain Hardwear has figured out a design that does not ride up when you lift your arms. Great cut and fit. It’s lightweight and good looking too. Highly recommended for mid-weight fleece needs.

Excellent Insulation

By:
March 30, 2005

I recently wore the Monkey Man Jacket during a 3 day mountaineering workshop in New Hampshire's White Mountains. As a mid-layer it provided excellent warmth between my Tenacity Jacket outer layer and my Duofold heavyweight base layer. Even with temps in the teens, I was comfortable and often was warm enough to go gloveless and hatless during excertion. I especially enjoyed the light weight and packability, plus the technical tailoring of the item. The close fitting cuffs and hem were greatly appreciated when combined with my other layers.

Great Looking, Warm, Light-Weight Jacket

By:
February 2, 2005

This is a wonderful jacket. It is light-weight, looks cool, and is warm. It can be worn as a base layer or mid-layer. If worn as an outer layer and you take a tumble in the snow, you’ll come up looking like a snowman, so wear an outer shell over your monkey pile when falling in the snow is likely. Also, under cold and breezy conditions you’ll want to wear the monkey pile under a shell as the monkey pile by itself offers little protection against wind; however, under a shell it is warm and cozy.

Excellent fleece

By:
February 2, 2005

The high-loft fleece does a great job of retaining warmth, especially under a shell. It's not windproof, but I've worn it in -5C weather(light wind and snowfall, hiking) with an Arc'Teryx Gamma SV vest, and it kept me warm. I've worn it under a 650wt down jacket in -30C weather, and I stayed very warm. It's lightweight, and the functional sleeves are great. It won't shed water, but I've worn it in light snowfalls and stayed warm; and it dries quickly. I prefer the lack of windproofing during physical activities, particularly as the MHW can get hot. For what it's worth, the "fuzziness" is pretty cool, and it stands out from other fleeces in terms of aesthetics.

Best fleece ever!

By:
December 15, 2004

I picked this fleece because I was tired of every performance fleece being wind proof and/or water proof. I have a shell for wind and water. What I needed was a fleece to fit under it. The "systems" (fleece+shell) stink because, once zipped in, you usually cant use the powder skirt which might be why they then have to make them wind/water proof. The "Monkey Man" rocks. It's as plush as a stuffed animal, very compressible, and fits perfectly under a shell which is where fleece really belongs.
