Mountain Hardwear WindStopper Tech Jacket - Men's

Just because the country is in the throws of a heat wave doesn't mean you can't plan ahead. The Mountain Hardwear Men's WindStopper Tech Jacket—a classic by now—is a windproof piece excellent for touring, track skiing, mountaineering, or whatever high-output sport you favor in winter. A windproof Gore WindStopper membrane keeps you warm with little added weight and it's incredibly breathable for long, hard aerobic workouts. As you make your final push for the peak, a moisture-managing mesh lining helps keep you dry on the inside. Extra-long underarm vents drop excess heat, zippered hand and security pockets stash your Chapstick and keys, and reinforcements in high-abrasion areas increase durability. When the snow comes, use the Windstopper Tech as a breathable mid-layer under a waterproof shell.

Bottom Line: Serious wind protection for serious mountain pursuits.

I just got this but am going to climb Rainier in August and am excited to try out the jacket. So far, everything about it is great. Its light, warm, vents well and packs well. Looks great too! This is hands down my new favorite piece of gear.

Good jacket; tiny, tiny flaws

By: George Crain (3)
May 29, 2008

I have this MH vest and like it a lot. It works very, very well, and I've been very impressed by it. The Windstopper fabric works quite well. This MH Windstopper jacket worked very well for me in extremely cold, windy, and just-a-little wet conditions in Oklahoma. It was quite warm with a capilene 3 layer beneath it. It also worked well for me in merely cold conditions in Colorado and Eastern Utah (temps in the 20s and 30s). However, I returned the jacket after a few weeks. My only nit-picky issues were 1) the pockets were a little funky, and my cell phone and wallet kept falling out (ie, there was no "space" or "lip" between the zipper and the back of the pocket); and 2) the color of the jacket (on-sale for a very good Backcountry.com price) was the exact same color as my MH vest. Yes, these are both extremely minor issues. Nevertheless, I returned it. Honestly, I will probably buy it again, but only after they fix the pockets. And when the black jacket goes on sale. It gets five stars, except for the pockets. Highest marks to MH.

Awesome Jacket

By: abrown562147113 (1)
March 30, 2008

Have had mine for little more than six months. Pros: -windy days...you don't feel a thing -warm: if you wear it right, if warn properly, breaths well -water resistant: Wore it in rain that was going sideways for about an hour (about 40 degrees F out). It kept me warm despite weather. Water soaked through eventually, but not until I got inside. Wouldn't suggest it as a rain coat but will hold up well in precipitation for a while. At least long enough for you to decide whether or not the weather will change or if your should throw on your outer shell or actual rain jacket. It kept me warm despite weather -fashionable: on the mountain and off -Maintenance: just follow the washing instruction Need to knows: -Size: buy a size larger, if you don't it probably won't cover your midsection or arms properly. However, do know that it will be large around your midsection, this takes me to warmth, if it is windy, you will want to tighten up the bungees around the waist to keep the breeze from coming up your stomach or up your back. You might not like that the neck is a little loose also. I actually love this because if it particularly cold and/or windy, I burrow my head into that loose shape in the collar and cover my chin and mouth up in that -Lint: the fleece on the jacket collects it...rather minor gripe I know, just thought you should be informed. Cons: -What I listed in the need to know -Price: didn't actually buy it, it was a gift, but still, it isn't cheap. However, had it not been a gift, I would have bought it eventually anyways. All in all, I feel it is worth every penny. Just got back from an 18 mile day hike up in Yosemite and am so glad I had. It was about 45 most of the day, but 35 when we started. Would throw it on when we took a break and my sweat would cool. Drizzled a little, wore it then as well. Coldn't wear it all day though, as it got to hot.

Nice Jacket, silly logo

By: Bergyvegas (6)
March 16, 2008

Stops wind as advertised while being thin and light. Pit zips are a real plus and the length drops enough to cover your tail. While it does have a cinch cord on the hem, the collar does not. Funny thing because the cheaper MH Link jacket has a collar cinch. The largest negative about this thing is the foolishly large logo on the chest. I just don't understand why MH insists having such a large advertisement on this piece. A smaller more subdued logo would be welcomed. If you can get past the billboard on your chest, this jacket is the best in class.

By: tsaylor45 (20)
February 14, 2008

The sizing is really strange. I tried to make this work, I'm 6'0"/165 lbs, and I fit well into a Medium with Patagonia, TNF, and Marmot. With this, I tried a Medium and it was too tight in the chest, shoulders and sleeves; I tried a Large, and it was great in the shoulders and sleeves, but cut for a gigantic belly. Too much room for layering, I just looked ridiculous.

Awesome Jacket!!!

By: Moe79 (1)
January 25, 2008

I was unsure about buying such an expensive jacket without having seen it in person, but with the help of the team at your site, I decided to give it a try. I am very impressed with the quality and function of the jacket. I usually hate wearing coats or jackets of any kind because they are too bulky and uncomfortable. I find myslef wearing this jacket constantly. I wear it during all kinds of outdoor activities, to the office, in the office and to the mall. It has been unusually cold here lately(single digits in the am and up to almost 20 in the afternoon) and this is all that I have been wearing. Yes, you would want to insulate better than this jacket if staying out for a long period of time, but with the wind cutting ability it keeps me warm enough on a 20 minute dog walk at 6:30am. All I can say, is that this is an awesome jacket and trust the team here.....They know their stuff!

Very Unhappy With a Brand I Used to Love

By: C.W. in Sacramento, CA (9)
January 5, 2008

I've purchased four prior Mountain Hardware Windstopper products several years ago. When I saw this red color I thought I'd add it to my collection. This jacket is poorly made; the quality is "cheesy". It is not made in the same location as the previous Mt. Hardware products, so that might account for its lack of warmth and lightness. I will probably stop buying Mountain Hardware as a result of seeing what they are making now. I would recommend buying something from another company.

This jacket is incredibly versatile. I use it primarily for running; it's been warm down to 3 degrees (f) with just a tee shirt underneath, and equally comfortable at 40 degrees when worn loosely. Great for cross country skiing as well as a trip to the grocery store. I've never owned a jacket that I just didn't want to take off. Comfort, fit, sizing are perfect. Worth every penny.

My son had to have this jacket and so it was a Christmas present. He hasn't taken it off since getting it. He loves it, like someone said he loves it much more than his Denali and he liked his Denali, warmer, less bulky, and a great fit. True to size. Mountain Hardware hit the mark with this one.

Astounding, Phenomenal, Magnificent

By: B. Blalock (2)
December 29, 2007

So you read the reviews, right? You may just think that every single one of the people who have decided to review are hardcore gear heads with too much time on their hands... maybe they are, at least I thought that. I mean, I read the reviews for this jacket, and needless to say, I still felt the jacket and/or it's raters were an anomaly at the very least, I would not have ever expected such a product to exist that was as great as people say it is. Well it is great, and it does exist. MHW takes this jacket to a level not yet reached by other outdoor companies, but this is my opinion so interpret it how you wish. Never would I have foreseen my writing this review, strictly because of the time it would consume, but I must bow down to the superiority of this jacket and indulge you with a brief and colorful synopsis of why I've found it to be such a marvelous piece of equipment. I work outside in Louisville, KY and the weather here is pretty fair year round. Winter avg. temp. is 25-30 F with gusts of 10-15 mph winds due to our location on the Ohio River Valley, like I said...fair. I do not get cold very easily when active outside, albeit, who usually does? With this jacket on, due to it's incredible windstopping, all I need is a long sleeve t-shirt underneath and I am Golden. Never has wind been blocked with such tenacity, and to further test this jacket, I rode with all my windows down in my Subaru when it was 20 F outside for a good 30 miles without once feeling any unusual cold holes in this jacket. MHW has amazed me, there is no other word that can describe any more eloquently a jacket such as this. This has been my two-cents, so it is with my continued slack jawed amazement I shall adorn my back once more with this jacket to go and confidently brave the breezy ville.

absolutely fantastic!

By: pete_k (10)
December 12, 2007

I got this one thinking it was simply be a fleece that blocked wind, but its so much more than that! The warmth provided by the Tech jacket is terrific, especially when you feel how light it is. I often have to open the pit-zips - thank goodness those are there. Its bizarre to wear such a light feeling coat, yet have chilling winds whip around you instead of through you. Its ultra comfy, too, right down to the super soft cuffs on the sleeves. Looks very sharp, and has durable nylon everywhere in all the right places. The MH logo adds a touch of flash and turns alot of heads. This is a fantasic jacket.

Great Choice

December 5, 2007

This is a great jacket! Mountain Hardware has outdone themselves with this one. I'm an avid backpacker and an amateur rock climber. This jacket works wonders as a light mid-layer. The only downside to this one is it's not too warm. But, the simple fact that i stuck my arm out the window at 80 mph and no wind came in on me makes up for it tenfold. Absolutely a great choice for your backwood romps.

Love it. Bought a size larger than I needed for those days of wearing a large sweater or hoodie underneath. Plenty of room, inside for movement. Wish the outside pockets were larger and they seem difficult to open when gloved up, but still getting used to the angle on them. Very worth the money.

I've owned this jacket for two years and dread the days I have to cover it with a shell, which is only during the harshest of conditions. Light weight, warm, and stops wind like an iron curtain. Tour in it all day and it breaths nicely. Tear down Alta on the coldest of days wearing only this and a fleece and you will still break a sweat. Hands down this is my go to jacket for all things winter. If there were down sides... and I'm digging here, the zipper will occasionally catch when the whiskers get long, but what jacket doesn't. And the material likes dog hair, at least retriever hair, but easy to remove.

Pragmatism defined.

By: Hodges (4)
October 31, 2007

Unfortunately most pragmatists don't care about warm hands--myself included. Pockets are awkward, and this jacket does not insulate very well. However, it stops the wind like crazy so it enhances the insulation capabilities of your other garments--making it by far the most versatile jacket I have ever used. It's seen most of Central and Eastern Europe--from 60 degree sunny Prague afternoons to low teens snow Bavarian nights. I've yet to see anything nearly as adaptable as this jacket.

7 years and counting

By: Dmont (10)
October 16, 2007

I've had this fleece for 7 years. It's seen everything from Killington ice to Ithaca sleet to high-elevation hikes in Ecuador to snow downpour in Colorado. It's sylish, it compacts well. It's essentially the perfect layering tool. Buy a breathable, waterproof, light shell for when it really rains or snows and you'll be perfect. I usually don't even put on a shell when I ski - it keeps moisture out quite well on its own. It really is wonderful and worth every dollar. When my old one dies (hopefully never) I'll buy another.

The best of the fleece jackets

By: maine canoe (3)
September 18, 2007

Ok, I have sons in their teens and 20's and they steal my jackets. The Denali jacket is long gone and the Patagonia ones too. I jealously guard my Tech Jacket, I even sewed patches on it to make it unappealing. This jacket is warm, absolutely windproof, well designed and made. It is the perfect jacket for really mean conditions. Great fabric, zippers and pit zips, love the pockets. Just one gripe and it's small, the jacket is a "trim fit", if you are carrying a few extra pounds you will find it tight. I've worn it alot and it shows no sign of chafing or wear.

Higher-end Jacket and Mid-range Price!

By: ralanblake (1)
June 21, 2007

I purchased this jacket solely based on the reviews on this and other sites. I was not disappointed! The jacket packs down super-small, really does a great job of stopping the wind, has plenty of easily accessible pockets, is toasty but ventilates well, and fits nicely. There are probably better jackets to be had, but none for this price!

Mountain Hardwear is just that!!

By: Gerry (2)
March 6, 2007

I've had this jacket for over a year now and I'll have to say that it's by far my favorite jacket. It's light weight and yet warmer than any fleece jacket I've ever owned. I take it on all of my hiking and camping trips and it's been through it all. I've snagged it on trees and rocks when climbing or breaking brush and it has yet to tear or rip unlike my past cheap fleeces...not that it can't happen..we shall see! Although like all other fleeces it's definitely not fire proof! I've got several spots where the campfire popped and threw sparks on my fleece burning little indentions into the fleece. Interesting enough though, this fleece has yet to get a hole burned all the way through....maybe I've been lucky. Mountain Hardwear is true to its name by far!! Great Product! Plus with everyone from their mama and daddy wearing North Face it's nice to have something different. It separates the men from the boys!!

One cold winter day I had to take my motorcycle out to go 60 miles to work because the truck was in the shop. I thought how could I stay warm doing this in northern Wisconsin. I put on lots of layers and then the Mountain Hardware WindStopper Tech Jacket and instead of the wind cutting through me... I was cutting through it cruising along on the cycle. It did however get extremely cold on my hands and feet. Next thing I need is a pair of windproof gloves. Preferably leather. I have worn it pretty much every day of the winter since I have gotten it. It even works well during this last cold snap we have had. Temps ranging between -30 and -5 for a high! Very Well Built!

Very Sharp Jacket in Looks and Performance

By: RFree (1)
February 1, 2007

Mountain Hardware has a way of putting out really sharp looking jackets, and the Windstopper Tech Jacket caught my eye a long time ago. I have been extremely pleased with mine. It is a great all around jacket for hiking, backpacking, base layer clothing for sking, alpine climbing, or anything outdoor for that matter. I also love mine for just running around town as well. It is so thin and comfortable, you will forget you have it on as I have mine. I catch myself wearing it indoors for some time until I finally notice I need to take my jacket off! It's that comfortable. Windstopper does what it says, it absolutely stops any wind from coming through. I have read some reviews that state it is warmer than a North Face Denali. I don't know if I would stretch it that far, but it is a very warm jacket. It is about half the thickness of the Denali, so I might argue that point, but it is a very sharp looking, high performance jacket that you will definitely not be disappointed in. It is worth every penny you pay for it. I own a North Face Denali and this Windstopper Tech Jacket. They both have their place and will not leave my clothes inventory for some time.

The reviews for this coat are on target: Pros - -Excellent wind-stopping ability -Good, athletic fit -Soft material Cons - -Pockets are high cut, a little uncomfortable -Obnoxious chest logo -External chest pocket is awkward. I wish the Napoleon pocket was on the outside. -Not nearly as warm as some reviewers suggest. Keeps out the wind, but isn't super-insulative. -Neck could be a litle tighter. I have a big neck relative to the rest of my body. Even so, when fully zipped up, the collar still isn't snug against my skin. Overall, a recommended jacket, with a few acceptable drawbacks.

Warm, light, and stylish.. Mountain Hardwear's most functional jacket.

By: CGarrett (5)
January 23, 2007

I've had my Windstopper Tech for well over a year, and it has been my most valuable jacket since. This jacket has protected me on bike rides in the rain, kept the chill out on the mountain, and insulated perfectly alone under a shell in the snow. It's great for year-round wear with an added base layer or shell when its extra cold or with the pitzips open on cool summer evenings. It's also the best looking jacket of this sort that I have. The pockets are well-placed for functionality, with big hand warmers that aren't awkwardly high. If the one I have ever wears out, I'll definitely buy another!

Great jacket if it fits...

By: ChrisB (4)
January 1, 2007

I was looking for a jacket that was warm enough for winter hiking and had good weather resistance and breathability. I bought the WindStopper Tech because of the great reviews. The jacket is very warm and well-constructed. Unfortunately, I found the cut of the jacket to be too loose (men's size small). A men's small in the North Face, Arc'teryx, Marmot and other Mountain Hardwear products fits perfectly, but the WindStopper Tech seems about 2" too long in the front and has way too much room around the waist. Not sure how this translates to the other sizes. I tried a Mountain Hardwear Link jacket which fit much better.

Windstopper jacket

Does what it says it does. The fabric protects against wind and is ample warmth in temps in the teens and twenties. This replaced a Denali jacket which I had had for two previous seasons, and I would have to say the Mountain hardware product is superio
