Merrell Traverse Backpacking Boot - Men's

Your friend's pack fits only 45 liters, and it looks like you'll be carrying the heavy stuff. Outfit your feet with the Merrell Men's Traverse Backpacking Boot and count on excellent traction, support, and shock-absorption—even under a heavy load and across tough terrain. Slip-lasted construction and a Vibram Backpacker sole with Trek rubber keep you gripped to that sloping rock face, even when your pack tries to answer to the call of gravity. Merrell gave these leather boots compression-molded EVA midsoles for support and Air Cushion midsoles to take the sting out of downhill jaunts. A TPU rear stabilizer keeps your heel in place for precise footing and less blisters. Should your trek involve hardpack or ice, the Traverse Boots work with most styles of crampons.

Bottom Line: Traverse streams, small glaciers, and mountain faces in these Merrell backpacking boots.

This is a preliminary review, as I have not run these boots through the gauntlet yet. Have only broken them in in day to day life and done a few short trail hikes in them. Pros: Excellent waterproofing, very comfortable and warm. Very supportive. Amazing traction on everything: steep grades, loose gravel, ice, nothing stops em. Cons: Heavy, very stiff (took 8 days to break them in). Not good for warm weather. Haven't had a day off yet that was in the 40's or 50's yet, have only tested extremes. 20's and 30's great, 70's was a sweaty mistake.

How waterproof are they. I live the pacific northwest and will be encountering rain and wet snow frequently on my hikes.

Flag

They are very waterproof, they aren't going to be getting wet from the outside, unless it comes in through the top of the boot

The Traverse is extremly confrable so long as it's laced up properly. It is very durable, keeps your feet warm dry and confrable. I have yet to use them in the Adirondacks as was their main pourpose but I look foreward to doing so.
