Marmot Bastione Component Jacket - Men's
You could encounter cold, wet weather or warmish spring conditions on your backpacking trip, and the Marmot Men’s Bastione Component Jacket is ready for both. The insulated liner in this jacket removes so that you can wear the shell on its own for misty, humid spring days, sport just the liner in dry weather, and zip into both when the sun goes down while you’re setting up camp. The Angel-Wing Movement design won’t expose your lower back as you attach the rain fly, and pitzips help you cool off once you get the campfire going.
Bottom Line: So many options.

shell is rated "water-resistant". How does this shell compare to GoreTex in terms of rain protection?

It is a fully taped membrain shell so it is rain proof to 20,000 mm which far exceeds the military standard for water proofness and is only slightly below gore-tex.

Great Jacket

This was my first purchase from Marmot, and I must say I'm fairly impressed. The MemBrain does a fantastic job of resisting water, much better than my Mountain Hardwear Cohesion shell. Also has a removable hood. The fit is snug and not bulky like many other 3-in-1 jackets; I'm 6'2", 190 lbs and have a Large. This jacket is very warm (for Cincinnati winters at least) and does a good job of resisting wind. The lining doesn't appear to be very heavy, but it is just as warm as 300 wt fleece. I have one (very small) complaint, and that is the front hand pockets are a bit small. Other than that, this jacket is great.
I see 2 prices. Which would it be for a men's large? Also,
I see 2 prices. Which would it be for a men's large? Also, this coat form BackCountry on Amazon shows a $20 off orders over $100. Can I get that when I deal direct? Thanks for your help. Great site too!

It sounds like this is not a great jacket for really cold wasatch conditions, top of Snowbird, etc. Is that right?

The Bastione should be plenty warm enough for the top of Snowbird. It has a quilted synthetic liner that is warmer and lighter than 200 weight fleece. It is also versatile because the liner is removable for warmer weather.
