Line Mothership Alpine Ski

Riding the Line Mothership Alpine Ski is like being abducted by aliens, except they’re nice ones who take you on a spaceship ride to the Alaskan backcountry where they cheer you on while you lap 4,000 ft. powder runs above the tree line all day. It’s the best because with the Line Mothership, this happens without hallucinogenic drugs, plus the aliens don’t perform mind experiments on you. This ship’s futuristically high-tech Metal Matrix construction offers you power where you need it, minus the weight. These may be superfat, but don’t call them obese: they’re limber enough to ride your ass down 50-degree slopes, responding to your every shift with extraordinary edge-grip and torsional responsiveness. Trust the Mothership to take you on the big mountain (free)ride of your life with its G-force Geometry, symmetric flex, and maple macroblock core. Just hold on tight.

Bottom Line: In the words of Ricky Bobby, “I felt like I was in a space ship.”

If I can ski them, you can

At 5'8", 125 lbs., I hear a lot of comments from people wondering if the Mothership is really my ski or if I am just carrying them for someone else. Seriously? Yes they are stiff, but that doesn't mean you can't dance on them. Plus, they have a little early rise, so they ski a bit shorter than their listed length. If I were to have only one pair of skis this season, these would be the boards. They are a reasonable size underfoot, so you don't have too much ski when it is hardpack and you definitely have enough when the snow is piling up. The flex pattern makes them extremely trustworthy. The only thing they may not be too great for would be hardpack bumps, but who likes to ski those anyhow?

Awesome big mountain performance

By:
March 20, 2009

To start, I'm 6'2" and 180. So getting that out of the way, I think much smaller guys could rip these just as hard as I did. They were very light for how stiff they were and how well they skied. Unfortunately I was only able to ski them in icy crud, which they killed it in. I can only imagine how they react in the soft stuff. The stability of these at high speeds really allowed me to straight line even the sketchiest chutes with great confidence. I highly recommend these skis to any one looking for a high performance, stiff, charging, one ski quiver go anywhere big mountain ski.

Has anyone been on the 195s? With the early rise(4mm @ 15cm down

Has anyone been on the 195s? With the early rise(4mm @ 15cm down ski) I'm wondering what length they actually feel like. Combine that with the twin tip and these could literally feel like a 180cm fat ski! Looking at these, 190 Katana, 190 Gotamas and 191 Mantras. I ski Squaw and Kirkwood, as much off piste as possible. Pow, crud, trees, cliffs, chutes, and love to lay down long fast turns when I have to be on trail. I am 6'2", 215 and have been skiing for 30+ years. Was most recently on Prophet 100s which I loved, but always seemed a little too soft and just a tad unstable at top speed. Looking hard at the Motherships(185-195?), but wanted comparisons between the Volkls as well. Opinions and recommendations welcomed.

All of these are really good skis, and any one of them will give you what you are looking for, at least for the most part. The early rise on a twin-tip will make it run shorter, but not a full 15 cm! It will maybe feel about 5-7 cm less, but probably a little less than that seeing as you are used to a twin-tip already. The Motherships are monsters in the pow, super stable at speeds, and with that early rise they are great in the crud. The Volkl skis are all great skis, not really my favourite skis to ride on though. They are super stable for ripping it up, and pretty floaty for the pow. The way that you listed them is almost the way I would rate or recommend them, Gotama, Katana, Mantra. Overall, for what you are looking for, I think that the Motherships in the 195, or the Gotama in the 190 would be awesome for you.

you will BLOW IT UP on these!

By:
March 27, 2009

was skiing Line Prophet 100's before they were officially introduced to the public. After 3 pairs of those it was time to taste. Enter the Mothership into my quiver. Wow!!! day old but very nice deep crud after 9-12" yesterday at Crystal Mtn. Something to be said for a ski with vertical sidewalls woodcore and METAL! Absolute steering precision through foot plus deep day old crud and lumps of white goodness. SMOOTH. Felt like being on rails on the front side. So solid yet throw em the other way in a trough when it seems like there is no other way and they just come around and save your bacon.
Hiked and skied the Throne chutes and the Southbacks Silver basin same day with some heavier but smoooth pow with a smooth sun/windcrust on the lower aspect. Smokin! The 185 was plenty of ski for me but had me thinking what a rockstar this would be in a 95' up in AK. Buy Em

The real deal big mountain sticks

By:
February 24, 2009

This ski is serious! This is a beast of ski. They are heavy, they are fat, and there is a lot of metal in them. This ski kicked my butt when i was on them, but I still loved them. I've never had to work so hard to ski a ski as I did with these. But it was worth every minute of it. These things are everything a real ski should be. They rail down groomers at mach whatever. They are super stable on landings when hucking cliffs. They have a tiny bit of tip rocker so the float in pow and plow through crud. And for such a big ski, they are surprisingly nimble. Everything you could ever ask for a want in a big mountain ski, this one can do it. Other than its weight, this may be the perfect ski. They are really fun to ski, and inspire tons of confidence in the steepest, sketchiest lines. Riding these I felt like I had a tank on my feet. These things were bulletproof and made me feel i could ski through/over anything that got in my way. If you are looking for a big mountain ski or a comp ski this is where you should start and finish your search. It is an amazing ski in all aspects, and looks absolutely amazing in person.

Big Beefy fun ski.

By:
January 29, 2009

I got these skis for shreddin when the big storms roll into Utah... they are awesome. Some people said "they are only good for heli trips" but they were wrong..

The motherships are a really fun ski to rip around the resort. Super stable at high speed and suprisingly easy to carve big GS turns on the groomers. In the trees it is very easy to whip them around quickly or bounce shortys through tight shoots. The ship bust through crud like a dream and float like a cork in the real deep stuff!
I was also amazed at how well they rode switch. The Ships can cruise in knee deep doin turns switch as if you were ridin a park ski on the grommers, so easy..
Also they feel well balanced in the air, you can be confident your in for a good landing on these things..

im 6ft ,180lb I went for the 185 and mounted em with the marker giffon binding on the midsole line, nice light weight setup.
So get on the Mothershp's coz they can charge anything whilst still being easy to navigate.
have fun..

I live in Tahoe so I want a pretty burly ski for the Sierra Cement.

I live in Tahoe so I want a pretty burly ski for the Sierra Cement. I ski mostly off piste, but that includes a lot of tight trees. Looking for the widest ski possible that is still quick for the trees. Would I be better off with the Motherships or the Prophet 100s?

It's funny you sould ask this question, I also live in the tahoe area and when i fist picked up the mothership i thougt it would be the perfect ski for sking the heavy snow at the top of kirkwood or mammoth a day or 2 after a big dump, there stiff and kind of heavy but i bet you could never find the speed limit of them, also the turn radius is 24 m so they should be fairly quick. imo i would go prophet 100 , softer, quicker, lighter yet still has the metal in it to bust crud. The motherships might be to much ski unless your charging hard all the time.

Heavy.

These guys are pretty heavy. I couldn't believe how much they weighed. I'm sure had there been more fresh, they would have been great in the powder.

Not the ski for me

By: Backcountry.com Employee
March 23, 2009

Sorry, but this ski was a total buzz kill for me. Granted I did got to a flat resort on a hard pack day with moguls, and more moguls as far as the eye could see. I thought the ski was grabby on a icy slope, sucked on crust wind pack, and could not find any confidence in them at high speeds on a icy groomer. I usually ski longer skis, my daily driver is the 190 Volkl KATANA. It was hard to image that these skis could be good at all in fresh snow becasue they sucked. I did find that you could straight line in a side slip at high speeds and the ski made me feel like a clown in a resort town. I tried them for a day and would never buy them for my own.

Line Mothership Alpine Ski

By: Backcountry.com Employee
March 10, 2009

The Line Mothership is sweet ski. This things like to go fast and charge hard. I got worked on them but had a lot of fun. Super stable at speed, will blast though crud and float really well in pow. They will even hold an edge on groomers if you need them to.

Seek and DESTROY

By: Backcountry.com Alumni
January 29, 2009

This are some amazing skis. They are insanely stable and just beg to go fast, really fast. Standing atop any line with these on your feet, you only feel one thing, Confidence. I have skied them in everything from powder to groomers to the mankiest wet snow there is, and they destroy it all. The most suprising thing about these skis is their performance on groomers and in hard snow. They carve trenches, and crush any crud or variable snow that gets in your way. The tip rocker keeps you floating in the deep snow. If you ski hard, and can drive a ski, you need to check the motherships out. They don't get the press that other skis in this category get, but in my opinion are the best option out there. I have skied the legend pro, and the XXL, and prefer the mothership over both. Its stiff with a great flex pattern, and doesnt have the planky feel of the XXL.

pretty cool

By: Backcountry.com Employee
January 8, 2009

this is a pretty cool ski. They are really heavy, I have used them mostly on groomers so far and they are really fun to point down the hill because you will never find the top speed on them. The thing that I didn't like was they didn't like to turn very well, they just felt pretty planky. If you get a chance to try them out, go for it!
