Keens are just that on aqueous-hybrid hiking footwear

By:
June 20, 2007

Okay, after reading one of the previous reviews here on BC, I was a bit reluctant to try a pair of Arroyos but I'm so glad I took the plunge!
I wore these for about 5 days straight in sandy beaches, rock climbing, peabled uneven winding trails, and uneven cobble stone streets with hills here and there and lots of heat all over. The were very comfortable and proved to be very durable. I made the right choice since these have a more rigid arch platform than the other Keens. If you examine the different Keen hybrid sandals, some have a softer foam arch area which is good for water and walking but not as much for rocks or twigs digging into your foot. The Arroyos provided a bit more protection from jagged rocks and branches. No complaints here, however I might put in a more aggressive sole for more aggressive hiking.
I have to warn you, these do seem to fit a bit large. Let me explain, I normally wear a 11.5 or 12 depending on brand but with Keens, an 11 proved the best fit. I would definitely try some on in real life first! If not try ordering a half size to one size smaller depending on your arch. Now when I say your arch, I mean with weight. If you notice many people are one size by measure, but about a half-to a full size more with their body weight on their feet. Add in some swelling after 12hrs of hiking and you have a foot screaming for breathing room.
These Keens are outstanding in terms of versatility, durability and breathability. I've taken them with me on two different trips and they have faired very well. The tread on these was surprisingly agressive! They almost felt like I was wearing my boots. Not only was I NOT but my feet were 'in the nude'...partially anyways...and loving the extra ventilation.
The fact that they are waterproof was just 'icing on the cake'. I was able to take these kayaking, beach walking and even had to swim with them. I will say that if you are looking for a dedicated watershoe, the open-healed Keens made out of Polyester webbing (H2s) are better but these faired VERY well. These proved more for hiking, walking and the occasional H2O dip.
I would recommend them without reservation. Especially if it involves water and fast-paced outdoor madness.

Nice durable hiking shoes

By:
August 3, 2007

These are solid hiking shoes. I took them to Costa Rica and they performed marvelously. They have a rugged tread on the bottom, and the open lacing system gives them a cool sandal-hybrid appearance. However, before you purchase them, be aware of the following:
-- The "charcoal" color is not really charcoal, it's a dark green color. This is not apparent in the picture and a little misleading
-- They take a LONG TIME to dry once they get wet. The leather is waterproof and there is a neoprene sock material inside the shoe, which makes them more versatile when hiking in water or wet environments. But once they were submerged in water, it took them a good 2-3 days to dry out.
-- They run very true to size. I wear a 12 in almost every shoe brand, and the 12 fit me just fine.
In all, these are great shoes by a great company you can really trust in. Keen makes great shoes. If you're looking for a less traditional hiking shoe that is versatile enough to wear on the trail and off, this rugged sandal hybrid is for you.

All right but laces?

By:
November 18, 2008

I have used this model for 4 moths without interruption; one day one lace left me and I have noticed that is the weak side of those sandals because of rubbing; are there laces made with strongest fabric?

INFERIOR LACE SYSTEM

By:
February 17, 2009

I like the ventilation that they provide but the slide catches do not hold .. This requires stopping often to pull them tight..keen's remedy for this was to send me new slide locks and laces of the same quality.. This is a design problem.. My suggestion is to use slide locks like merrell shoes have .. They stay put.. If keen could improve this problem, these shoes would be great..

LACES COULD BE IMPROVED

By:
February 16, 2009

I HAVE 2 PAIRS OF ARROYO'S.. THE SLIDE THAT KEEPS THE LACES TIGHT IS WORTHLESS FOR WHAT IT IS SUPPOSED TO DO. THEY DO NOT STAY IN PLACE AND IT REQUIRES STOPPING TO TIGHTEN QUITE OFTEN.. KEEN'S REMEDY IS TO SEND YOU NEW SLIDES AND LACES OF THE SAME QUALITY! THE ONLY REASON I CONTINUE TO WEAR THEM IS THE GOOD VENTILATION . KEEN SHOULD TRY A SLIDE THAT HOLDS AS WELL AS THE ONE THAT MERRELL USES ON THEIR SHOES..

A tad more shoe than the H2

By:
January 12, 2009

I spend a lot of time in my Keen Newport H2's and wanted something that allowed me to use an orthotic insert. These fit the bill and feel great. I even wear them when I'm out and about for a short times in the Minnesota winter. A good pair of smart wool socks, and they are as good as the Targhee shoes!

Blisters

By: Backcountry.com Employee
May 29, 2007

I wore this shoes for 4 days leading up to my trip down to Moab, Utah to make sure I had the break in process going for when I was down there. I have a regular width foot, with a high arch and "regular sized" ankles and heels.
I normally wear a 10.5, but those were way to big, the 10's fit but there is a slight gap between my ankle and the back of the shoe. I did try on the 9.5 to see if that eliminated that space, but those were too tight.
The back, top part of these rub against the back of my leg and created some pretty bad blisters. I ended up putting large band aids over and continued to wear them thinking it was just a break in process issue. Down in Moab I wore them hiking around my camp site, in a stream to gather rocks for a fire pit hoping the water would soften them up and the rubbing would go away. After they dried out over night I put them back on, but still were rubbing, nothing I did seemed to make this go away and I ended up using my North Face trail runners to hike in on my trip.

Great for wet environments!

By:
June 16, 2008

Great hybrid product! I wear them everyday to work at a sea turtle center and the environment, needless to say, is wet and slippery. At work I wear them with short socks and on kayaking trips without socks and they're awesome with/without! If I get them completely submerged they usually dry out over night!

Arroyo II- second pair, same problem?

By:
April 2, 2009

My first pair were great until I couldn't keep the laces tight. Try to hike with a loose shoe! I didn't read the reviews and thought the shoes were worn-out. Not so. The lace catch wouldn't hold. I tried to find lace replacements. No luck. Where can I find them?
I had already bought a second pair. I haven't worn them yet. Now I'm worried... If I could get new laces, I'd love these Hiking Shoes.

Great sandal hybrid

By:
August 9, 2008

This is the only sandal that I have found that has an enclosed heel. I have an orthodic insert that slips out of regular sandals. In addition, this is simply a great shoe to wear with or without socks. I am not sure that I would use them for serious hiking in the mountains.

Fit could be better.

By:
December 29, 2008

Okey i purchased these shoes mainly because Ive had good luck with Keen products.I own the Napali,Newport and Newport H2...these however are a dissapointment because of the lace system that works awesome on other models.

I cant get these tight enough that when walking the heel part keeps flopping/rubbing (even tho the shoe size is deead on).Its like wearing a flip flop. The only remedy i could think of is to replace the locking adjustable laces to a traditional laces, add a real thick heel insole are or maybe even thicker socks.

Love the ventilation

By: Backcountry.com Employee
April 27, 2007

These shoes are great for hiking in warm weather, the ventilation is just amazing. It also helps when you have to pass through bodies of water, they dry out super fast. Very comfortable shoes, I wear them around town just as much as I hike in them. If they get too grungy you can just throw them in the washing machine, they are machine washable! Make sure to air dry them though, definitely don't want them in the dryer. Oh yeah, I would recommend going down a half size on these. I'm normally an 11.5 on the nose and an 11 would be perfect. You will not be disappointed in these as a hiking or casual shoe.

Great for all kinds of Terrain

By: Backcountry.com Employee
August 30, 2008

So far the Arroyos have been very comfortable in all kinds of terrain. I've worn them in the water and on the street. At the beginning, they were coloring my toes black, but not anymore. They do make my feet a little bit smelly, but maybe i'm not used to going sockless.
