K2 Apache Coomba Alpine Ski

K2 worked with Doug Coombs—the late, great extreme skier, ski mountaineer, and heli guide—to create the Apache Coomba Alpine Ski. This backcountry/powder ski's 102mm waist and Torsion Box construction provide excellent flotation and easy handling for tackling steep faces across the globe. Coombs gave his signature ski a new tip shape and balanced flex pattern for predictability in breakable crust and other less-than-ideal conditions. A progressive side cut ensures the Coomba still has enough power for the groomers or wind pack. A MOD secondary elastomeric core under the top sheet soaks up vibration and chop when straight-lining exit chutes. Doug Coombs died in La Grave France, doing what he loved—skiing steeps. K2 gives a percentage of all Apache Coomba sales to his wife and son, and will also donate to the Chad Vanderham Endowment, a nonprofit focused on improving guide education and safety.

A fitting Tribute to a Legend.

I am not a big dude, 5'9", 145, and I got the 188cm, length as the longest and widest ski in my quiver. I got them as a pure powder ski, and this year at Alta, they have gotten a lot of use. Since I am not a heavy guy, I don't need an uber stiff ski. I find the flex on these is good for me. Simply put, they rip up the pow and bust through the crud. Not ideal for moguls or groomers, but they actually get the job done fairly well getting back to the lift. I have pushed them pretty hard and have noticed too much instability at high speeds. A great ski for soft snow. Although I didn't mount them with AT bindings, this ski would be great for touring at a low weight. Doug Coombs would be proud. R.I.P. Doug.

Loves the deep, shakes when pushed

Great float on these skis. I have them in the 174 and they ski a bit longer than other 174's I have by K2. The tip just stays up and floats the body on top of the driest pow out there. Soft flex in the tip makes snap turns a breeze, even on the steep stuff. Have forced these into some quick, short turns even on the groomed and they come around with no problem. Those worrying about tight trees needent worry with these guys. On the other hand, they don't like speed. Considerable chatter from the tips when you crank them up in speed. If you are an aggressive skier and/or used to laying it on; one can quickly wash these things out. I have these mounted on the X's and I sometimes feel I'm too far in the back-seat when not in deep...but that's what one gets for a pow-ski. Simply put...if you find you have 6 inches or less of new snow...leave these boys at home and stick with something with more snap. These definately can feel like a noodle when pushed at speed.
