JanSport Big Bear 82 Backpack - 5000cu in

Thanks to its massive 5000cu inch main compartment, the Jansport Big Bear 82 Backpack holds all you need for an extended weekend on the trail or even a week in the hills. An aluminum stay and frame sheet add support when you load this Jansport pack to the gills, and the adjustable torso ensures a precise fit for nearly anyone. The Big Bear 82 Backpack includes four compression straps to stabilize your load and keep it from flopping around while you work through a technical section of trail.

Bottom Line: Carry more for the big trips with Jansport's Big Bear 82 Backpack.

Nice padding, little weight

By:

The padding on the hip-belt and shoulders of this pack is great. Typically men's packs are too large for women's torsos, but this one is adjustable and I've been able to make it work. (My torso is slightly longer than average for women sizing.) The main storage compartment is large enough to carry my tent, sleeping bag, sleeping pad, clothes, and food. There is a "hidden" compartment for inserting your own water bladder (not included). The top cover is also a compartment to store quick-access items (headlamp, rain jacket/pants, snacks). And there are just the right amount of compression straps to tighten down the load if you don't fill the bag to the max. Downside: it's not waterproof, but a generic raincover solves that problem and adds little weight.

Buy for simplicity

By:
October 16, 2008

I purchased this bag last winter and tested it on a really short trip with sucess. Last week I spent 4 days/3 nights in the high country in the Smokies. Pack performed reasonably well. My waist and hips are about the same size so transfer of weight to the hips has always been a problem. I found the 34# load to be reasonably comfortable. I am converting the waist buckle to a cam lock buckle which is the same thing I did with my external frame back. I am a BIG guy and the straps are barely long enough for me. I purchased this pack to reduce the total weight that I carry and for that it is great. The pack is NOT waterproof but lightweight garbage bags solve that issue. Bottom line - a good pack, light weight, simple, no frills.
