Well as you may know I had stated before I had seen this glove on the summit of mount everest
Then a few smucks came on here and put up false reports on how these are not!!! extreme gloves or made so and they suck .
I did go on hetra's website and research a bit and did find out they did use this EXACT glove, the ski heli on the show
Everest Beyond the LImit! This was the reason I gave these a field test I can tell you these are the warmest gloves on the market period!
So you you guys sitting on your seat eating chips actually go out in sub zzz and trek 10 miles then talk. Now Thats what I did. The gloves are so well made It really blew me away ! When researching the gloves I found that Hestra has a theory they trap a layer of warm air in the glove around the skin .
This is very tech stuff has to do with the materials they use and so on. These gloves smoke the black diamond guide gloves
I tested and almost got frostbite early this year. Hestra actually sells a mitt that goes over this glove if you needed extra protection this I guess traps more warm air in the glove!!! They run around 60.00, hestra also sells a couple of other liners A silk and waffle Both are around 20 bucks .
Give the site a peek it really blew me away how much research has gone into the hestra glove system.

I've got the Grey w/ Red stitching Hestra XCR gloves and highly recommend them. While they will be as warm as the Heli Gloves, the XCRs will be more breathable, and will stay drier if/when your hands sweat on warmer days. Both are great gloves, and I would give a slight edge to the XRCs.

Last glove I buy? Maybe.

By:
December 1, 2008

Before this year, I previously used the Marmot Randonnee glove and had great results with it until the fabric was pretty much shredded from normal wear and tear. So I switched to the Hestra Heli glove this year and couldn't be happier. It has some great features like a removable liner and a rather larger gauntlet that is perfect for keeping snow out of your sleeves on the deeper days. I can't comment on durability yet since it's still the early season, but the Heli glove was plenty warm when wind chill values dropped to -20F (-30 Celsius). It was also plenty dry on a day where it was snowing close to 2" per hour.

These gloves are worth it! I've had tons of problems with cheaper gloves in the past and decided to pony up for these and am so glad I did. They've kept me warm through the coldest and wettest days. The leather is super soft which is nice for maneuverability, but I've already started to wear thin spots in the seams after a year.

Are the removable liners in these Heli gloves durable? Enough to be removed after each day on the mountain? I want a bomber pair of warm, waterproof gloves with removable liners so the glove will dry at the end of a day pushing it on the mountain. Tired of pulling gloves inside out to dry.

the liners on my heli gloves have held up fairly well from taking them in and out of the glove to just dry them out. I've used them on their own (they look awesome) for when it warms up during the day and the velcro on the cuffs can snag on the high loft fabric of the liners a little but they're really not meant to be used that way so it doesn't really count. For just taking them in and out for drying purposes, they are plenty durable.

Well Its been two years of hard abuse on these gloves, I will say, if you want a glove that will stand up to constant use, these are it. Very well made, they have all day comfort. Be sure weatherize these each season, and they will last for years. Only time my hands got wet (but not cold) was in a Stowe Mtn spring season downpour, and I mean downpour. In the Utah dumps, never wet. BTW, those forearm straps are awesome, you never have to worry about losing your glove on the lift. Sweet.

Just have two days use of these gloves, and boy I am pleased. I've searched many days and found these fit the ticket. Warm, easy to put on, easy to take off, and the Goat leather can't be beat; so soft and supple. You can "feel" the poles, and you don't have to take them off the undo your jacket. Such a well made glove and it looks cool too. Very sweet.

The leather will repel water and dirt, but like any product, use over time can make things dirty. The link below is Hestra's care advice website:www.hestragloves.com/www/live/hestragloves/HGStandardGrey.aspx?TreeID=27James is correct here - the white leather will show some signs of wear; however, I think that the white leather may even look better once it's been nicely broken-in! Of course, any normal wear or minor discoloration (minor, because the white leather actually stays much whiter than one would expect) will not have a negative impact on the gloves' performance.

February 20, 2009

Bought these gloves based on BC ratings and BC gear specialist recommendation before my trip to Solitude and could not have been more pleased. 5 day back-to-back sessions later I've concluded that Hestra's are worth every penny! The gaiters kept the pow out, the straps kept my gloves secure when filming my bros in the deep - and the leather gave the confidence that these gloves are going to last. All in all - pefect in every way and exactly what I needed. I'll be using these gloves for years to come. High quality = high marks. You get what you pay for, folks.

I'm a Hestra fan, and own a pair of under cuff Hestra Ski Cross as well. These things are not Gore Tex, but after a full season never had an issue of staying dry (of course I'm CO, so heavy, wet snow fall is not that common). I picked these up for powder days, and ended up using them every day. The wrist strap wide and very comfortable. The cuffs are huge and easy to tighten. Once the lining packed out a little they became the perfect fit. Supple and if they don't make that weird fabric on fabric noise you get with other non-leather gloves. Adding oil/wax will keep them soft and increase waterproofing, but will darken the appearance of leather palms, but that shouldn't be a surprise. Finally, very warm for a glove, but I still keep a pair of light liners just in case.

Heli Glove is Splendid!

By:
March 6, 2007

I just spent a week in Breckenridge in which mid-mountain wind chills were well below zero. I was the only one in our party of six that did not have cold hands. This included my wife, who was sporting new Spyder gloves in the same price range. Worse yet, her Spyder gloves had hand-armer pockets and she used them.
Best of all, was the way the Hestras handled moisture. Through circumstances too humiliating to recount, I ended up beginning one day with snow inside my right glove. I braced myself for a day-long ordeal. Within 15 minutes the snow had been wicked away from my finger tips and I was completely warm. I have never been so utterly satisfied with a piece of equipment.

Nice glove

By:
January 7, 2009

I've used them on a couple of (lift-served) ski days so far, with temps at 8 and 20. I have cold hands, and they've done OK. I noticed slightly chilly fingers on the colder day, but once I started moving, they warmed up fine. What really impressed me was after getting snow into one of the gloves (set it down), my hand was wet and cold for about 5 minutes. The liners dried out really quickly and my hand was warm again surprisingly fast. Construction is good, the gloves look and feel great, and the idiot straps are really nice. They're fastened inside the gauntlet, and are wide elastic straps you slip over your wrists. No wrestling them over your jacket, and nothing to snag. One thing I notice: the gauntlet isn't insulated, so getting the cuff snugged down over your jacket is more important than with some over gloves I've had. So far, pretty happy with these.

Great Glove

January 8, 2008

This is my first Hestra glove. I honestly had never heard of the brand before buying this glove. I tested this glove out on some very cold days in Vail Colorado. I previously owned a pair of North Face gloves. I really like the feel of the Hestra Heli Gloves. My fingers felt nimble and able to do whatever I needed. I ended up not using the hook and loop strap underneath the glove.

My fingers were a little cold, but then again it was 2 degrees with a 15 mph wind so I expected it. All in all, I love these gloves and will not be going back to my North Face ones any time soon.

Superb glove!

By:
February 20, 2008

These arrived at my door the day before I flew to Utah for a week of classic powder. The leather palm is great for feel, but you need to keep it cleaned & lathered up with mink oil or something of the like. The liners are wonderful! But only if it's really chilly, because I got too warm after a few hard runs at 32F. Thankfully you can remove & replace them.

A kicker for me, outside of the nice gauntlet, is the "idiot straps" that allow you to take off your gloves without thinking twice about dropping them. Though I cannot count the times my mind freaked out thinking I was about to lose my gloves on the lift.

Great glove. Looks good too.

The gloves are great. Make sure you put the leather protection on as the snow will ruin them if you don't. There's a lot of hooks to ensure that you don't misplace these expensive gloves; a huge bonus! However, get a light glove to wear underneath for added warmth and for the moments where large gloves are too much.

Best general purpose skiing glove on the market

By:
March 20, 2009

Hestra overall makes the best line of ski gloves: materials and the fit are simply a cut above all. There are gloves in the hestra line that are better than the heli for some specific purposes, such as racing or spring skiing, but nthe Heli is the best general purpose ski glove bar none. It fits well, it protects you from snow, it has killer "idiot leashes", it is waterproof, and the removable liner makes it a snap to dry. If I had to have only one ski glove, that would be the Heli. Hestar hit that one out of the park.

No. The palm/fingers of the glove are leather and the remainder of the glove is nylon. There is a inner synthetic liner which is removable. I have found the combination to be very warm even with temperatures in the teens and sub zero, as many mention below. But even in warm conditions the glove breathes well. Overall, an amazing glove. Best Gloves Ever

October 24, 2008

The Hestra Heli gloves are the best that I have ever owned, hands down (and that's over 20 years of skiing). They are fantastic in both cold and warm ski weather, and the gauntlet does an excellent job of keeping powder out of your sleeves. The only downside is that the white leather marks easily when you're off of the slopes (if you carry your skiis in your hands) and begins to gray when you apply Heli's balm.

I bought the Hestra Heli glove for skiing -i gotta have that long gauntlet and these have that and more. i'll start with the bad parts and then i'll get into the good stuff. first the price was a little steep for me, but if you're looking for a great glove your gonna pay for it. i have used the gloves aprox. 45 times this winter and they show almost no wear -small slices in the leather from doing some grabs on skies but that's to be expected. the gloves have a keeper strap that you put on and it's terrific -no more losing gloves off the lift when you gotta get out the cell or the iPod. i skied last weekend in a DOWNPOUR- i made 2 runs and everything was iced and wet except the gloves still dry and warm. i can't say enough about them. as for the folks at this company, they are TOP NOTCH - they get my gear to me when i need it, they stand by their warranty and they care about their customers - keep up the work!

Measure the length and circumference (around the knuckles) of your hand in inches, then run it up against the sizing chart. There's a link to that right under the size/price pulldown menu. It's basically correspondent to the circumference (7 is 7 inches) but if you have narrow or wide hands or unusually long fingers or something, you should check.

Heli-ski glove is hella-good!

By:
April 1, 2008

The Hestra Heli-Ski glove is a super-hot-looking glove. Get your game on 'cuz these gloves make you look like you know what you're doing! A little less warm than I expected, but your hands won't get wet, and wind won't be an issue at all. All-in-all, an excellent glove with looks to beat anything out there. My friends who have seen these immediately started planning to get their favorite colors of heli-ski gloves when they saw mine.

The Best Gloves Ever!

By:
March 17, 2008

In 35 years of skiing (including multiple Heli trips), this is the Best pair of gloves I have owned. I really like the design of the "wrist retention straps". Everything about the glove is top-notch: the grip, the feel , the design, the materials. Hestra hit it out of the park!

I bought these gloves for colder days obviously. They are amazing. My hands never got cold or wet. I bought these over the army patrol gloves because i like my cuffs on the outside of my jacket. IMO this and the patrol glove are the only two serious choices for serious skiers or snowboarders. I wont ever get cold. Hestras quality is far superior to any that I have seen. I bought my gf a pair of bd patrol gloves and my hestras are just a step above. They are no joke. Get em if you want to be core, jong.

Perfect glove

By:
June 30, 2008

First class glove. Everything works! Super wrist strap for security on the lift when I tend to adjust my gear and ipod. Super warm and flexible. I purchased a size 9 and had return them for a 10, even after following the sizing chart. I knew better because of a similar review. I am currently using this glove in Chile, Valle Nevado....

Highly recommend this glove to anyone looking for a premium glove at a reasonable price!

Nice gloves, and great service from Backcountry.com

By:
February 16, 2009

I ordered these gloves to replace my Northface gloves that didn't hold up very well (the vinyl material on the fingertips started wearing through after one ski season). These Hestra Heli-Gloves have all the features I want, fit like a glove (no pun intended), and seem to be well-made and of high quality materials. I used them for two ski trips so far in 2009, and I am very impressed with the fit (snug, but not tight...I hate too much room in the fingertips). They also they keep my hands warm, but allow them to breathe so they don't sweat. Unlike my Northface gloves, the liner is held in place with velcro, so you can easily pull off the gloves and liners together (as apposed to having the liners stay on your hands as you pull off the shells).

I happened to get a defective pair (some stitching came undone). Eh, it happens, I would still recommend these gloves, and Backcountry.com really took care of me. I called to let them know about the stitching, and was geared up for an arguement, but the arguement never happened. The guy on the phone was professional and offered to send me a replacement pair right away for free. They also paid for the return shipping of the defective gloves. In fact, the gloves were on sale, so he even refunded some money back to my credit card. WOW, I was impressed. I will be buying from Backcountry again for sure! Way to go, Backcountry!!!

By:
April 23, 2009

ive had a pair of these gloves for two years and without a doubt they are the best gloves ever. the removeable liners are the best part of the glove. very warm but breathable, so your hands dont sweat to much. i will never own gloves with out removable liners, they can be pulled out and left to dry over night when skiing multible days in a row. plus you can wash them when they start to smell.
these glove are for cold days and storm days. you need a pair in your quiver. i just purchased a pair for my kid cause they need good gloves to. they will last for a long time, so there a good investment.

Great Gloves

By:
February 12, 2009

The gloves are very warm. While I was actually boarding and going my hand would almost get hot. But if I was just sitting down waiting on people and going slow they would start to get cold, but I do tend to have poor circulation. My buddies had Burton and a few other brands and were getting cold in places where I was fine.

I would recommend them to anyone. Great gloves.

Very, very nice glove!

By:
February 2, 2009

First, let me say how impressed I was with backcountry.com I ordered these gloves at 11pm on a Wednesday night and received confirmation the next day that the order was processed and shipped at 12:30am the following morning - they arrived as expected on Friday just in time to test this weekend at a very cold Killington which due to high winds had many lifts shut down all morning.

These gloves are very, very nice and I'm extremely happy with them. Can't speak for how well they do in wet conditions, but in bitter, windy cold, I had no problems.

The details and quality are impeccable. The inner fleece liner is secured at the wrist with a full circumference strip of velcro. A small carabiner connects the two gloves at a brass eyelet - no worries of cheap plastic connectors breaking under cold/duress. For me personally, the school kid-like wrist bands were my favorite feature. I'm constantly taking my gloves off at different points skiing down a trail to snap pictures of my kids, and having the ability to quickly pull off a glove to fish out a camera without fear of dropping and losing a glove is nice peace of mind.

The goat leather is very soft and supple. I think this could be reworked with a tougher leather. Hestra clearly states on the tag that ski/board edges are sharp and be careful handling with the gloves as you can cut the leather - this concerned me every time I picked up the skis, especially when scrambling around to get them secured on a gondola. I didn't get any rips/tears, but I can see it happening.

Lastly, I must advise that when I measured my hand size out, the XL (10) was pretty spot on with measurements coming in ever so slightly below what they called out for size. Having used the gloves for a full day, I think they are a bit too small and have already ordered up the next size up. My hands were comfy, they were warm, but at 3:30pm with the sun starting to dip, my fingers started getting pretty cold on the lift (everyone's were), but I attribute some of that to the fact that my glove was maybe just a bit too snug. I like a little more airspace. Depending on how you like to wear your gloves and the temperature conditions you are going to be in, if you come out nearly on top of the size that fits your hand, you might want to jump up a size.

Bottomline - yes, you can get a similarly functioning (and excellent) glove from Cabellas, but for overall form, function, and sharp, clean design, this glove is very, very, nice.

Super Gloves!!!

By:
February 4, 2009

I was a little worried that these gloves would not withstand huge amounts of snow fall because they really are not Goretex. Basically skied in a white-out and the backhand side while wet never presented any cold issues as well as dampness. The forehand, leather side was also wet but it was totally amazing how the gloves never had me worrying about cold wet hands.

Highly recommend these gloves!

Another one with cold fingers

By:
January 4, 2009

I have been suffering from cold fingers for many years now. These gloves are better that any other I tried, but I still have to curl my fingers into the palms when on lifts at less than 20 deg F. Otherwise, they are excellent: no problems with wind or moisture, great forearm straps, soft and easy to grip things with.

I bought them 3 years ago for $30 which was a great deal and used them since. They survived all weather conditions and never were damp or soaked. Great ergonomics (one-hand operation on wrist strap and cord), very warm and comfortable. Greatest glove I ever used!

Sweet glove, but not for the chronically cold...

By:
January 29, 2009

This is a pretty sweet glove- it looks wicked cool and most people are instantly jealous of them. While I have some gripes, it's not the glove's fault. It's just that my fingers have defined new degrees of "frozen" just about every time the mercury dips below 15F. I have some chronically cold hands that get so cold I can barely move my fingers by mid run, even when my fingers have been curled up in my palm for the length of the lift.

The first time I used these for a full day of skiing in about 15-20F my hands did OK. I used them with an underarmor liner (in addition to the fleece liner in these), and felt good for most of the day. Got a bit cold by the end but tolerable. The next day, temperature at base was about 5F and the entire day was bitter. By the end of my first run my hands were useless. Every finger was so cold and stiff I cold barely pick my skis up off the ground to run into the lodge in search of some mittens. I gave up my crusade to find a glove that'll work for me on the real cold days, and bought a pair of Swany full leather mittens. Those, with a hand warmer in my palm, did the job for the rest of the day. My hands have never felt better in super cold weather than with the mitts.

So, my suggestion for people with chronically cold hands will now forever be, give up and get yourself some mittens. I'll still use my Heli gloves for moderate days, but the mittens can't be beaten on the snot-freezing days.

That being said- my friends who don't have the same problem with their hands as me tried the gloves, and loved them. It's a sick glove - it's durable, warm and stylin'. But if you're like me, give up. It's mitten time.

Hestra Heli Glove

By: Backcountry.com Employee
March 13, 2009

I've had a pair of Hestra Heli Gloves that are now in their fourth season, and they are still in great shape. I've had to replace the inner liner, but the exterior is still holidng up really well. I get cold hands very easily, and find that I can wear these only in warmer temperatures (25 degrees plus). If you tend to get cold hands, I'd check out the Hestra Heli 3 Finger or Mitten. I know people who love the 3 Finger as they are significantly warmenr but they still have decent dexterity. The mitten is my everyday choice for most of the ski season, and they too are holding up great. I do recommend conditioning these regularly, either with Hestra's Leather Balm or a similar product If you take care of them, the shells will last a ridculously long time, though you'll probably have to replace the liner after a season or two (though this is someone who skis about 120 days a season).

Still looking for a truly warm glove

By:
January 7, 2009

While I like these gloves very much and use them regularly, I'm still balling my hands into a fist to warm them up on a normally cold day and quick to insert hand warmers on a really cold days. I know there are warmer gloves out there I just haven't found them yet.

I have always had really cold fingers so this review may not be fair but.... these gloves do not keep my fingers warm. In fact, when I took one of them off for a few minutes, I noticed that my exposed fingers got warmer than the fingers in the glove. I am also talking about cold rainy days.

Hestra Heli

By:
February 28, 2008

I returned the Hestra Heli glove without wearing it outdoors because of the fit. While the finger length (size 8) was perfect, the wrist area was too tight, even without securing the Velcro wrist strap/cinch. Using the wrist strap made it too difficult to remove the glove, which I often do. If your someone who rarely removes a glove then it might work fine for you.

Also, while the wrist 'leash' is great in that it has a tight wrist-band attached to the cord, it was uncomfortable (too wide), interfering with my layering at the wrist.

All of this is personal and you might find the fit fine. I suggest allowing enough time to return for a different size (I subsequently tried on a larger size in a store and it was too big in the fingers but OK at the wrist). I noticed a couple of other skiers wearing the glove and their wrist cinch was not secured, so I suspect this is common.

The feel of the glove when on is excellent in its flexibility and form-fitting. I wish they had been just a little wider at the wrist-it doesn't really need the wrist cinch. The gauntlet is great and the insert covers most of it.

The Black diamond 'Prodigy' or the 'OR 'Couloir' are alternatives, though the BD doesn't have a wrist strap (there are two small loops that should accommodate rigging your own).

Doesn't do what it claims

By:
February 2, 2009

These gloves look huge and daunting, like you could walk through a blizzard with only them on and still be warm. The truth is you might as well pick up a pair of $20 gloves at Target - they'll be just as warm. Don't get me wrong, they are made with quality, but my fingers, especially the tips, were consistently cold. I was surprised given all the positive reviews, but these simply don't work for me. Try the Norronas. I'd never heard of them either, but the customer service person here suggested them - they're made with Prima Loft - they're sturdy, look good, and most importantly, are warm.

Very disappointed. I sent them right back.

By:
February 13, 2009

Well this is my first review and my first disappointed purchase based on reading other user reviews.

Where to begin.

1. Poor insulation. Yes my hands tend to get colder than other people that I am usually skiing with, but skiing in 20 degree weather my fingers were completly numb.

2. Overdesigned leash straps. I just need a simple cord so I don't drop a glove on the lift, these things are designed like the wristbands that tennis players wear. At least my wrists stayed warm.

3. Velcro closure strap. The closure strap section on this glove was so tight that even with the strap open, I had to force my hands through the space. Also the strap is so bulky and overdesigned that I could barly move my wrists around

4. Carabiner clip to keep them together? What happened to a simple clip or snap. These things come with a two inch caribiner clip and instructions to "remove clip prior to use".

Hope this helps because many people obviously like this glove based on the reviews.
