GSI Outdoor Javapress

If you don't trust the coffeemaker at work, or your friends make a super rotten joe, pick up GSI Outdoors Coffee Press. It brews coffee and tea in three easy steps. It's made from Lexan so it's virtually indestructible and won't affect the flavor of your drink. It has a detachable handle for compact packing, making it ideal for travel, camping, or just stashing in your filing cabinet at work.

Bottom Line: The GSI Outdoors Coffee Press makes better coffee than your friends do.

Great coffee maker

I have the 33 oz javapress and absolutely love it -- so much so that I use it every morning to make coffee for 2. It's pretty durable (it's still intact despite falling off the counter a couple of times), easy to clean, and plenty light enough to take backpacking. If you're backpacking frequently or far enough that weight and space are a concern, I'd suggest you look into a folding drip system. But still, as far as all around versatility, this press certainly does the trick and I'd highly recommend it.

I have the smaller unit. It would be nice if it was just a little bigger. But, what the hack, it works good - coffee tastes great and highly recommended.

Works great, if you know how

One important thing to do, that isn't in the instructions: Make sure the plunger has reached the same temperature before plunging. Otherwise, the fit will be too loose (the cylinder has expanded from the hot water, but the plunger is still contracted from being colder) and grounds will flow easily into the upper chamber. Two improvements I'd like to see (but can be easily done at home): - Fill lines for 1 cup, 2 cups, etc. - An insulating jacket, so the coffee stays warmer, if it's not immediately poured into mugs. (My lid has never retained water, so maybe there's a leak in the other reviewer's.)

Garbage!

The lid retains water inside (great for hygene!) and the plunger can't do it's job and separate the grounds (which is why they had to place a second mesh filter in the lid over the spout) and since the spout clogs up with grounds it takes really long to pour. The old green one was quite good but don't waste your time here get the MSR mesh basket.

This has taken a beating and still going strong

I attach this to the outside of my backpack and throw it around and it still has note broke. Not quite as good of a seal for pushing the grinds down as I would hope, but oh well more caffeine. I never worry about it falling apart on me during my trips and brings a good comfort of home out into the woods.
