Garmin GPSMAP 60CS - 2004
The Garmin GPSMAP 60CS GPS is a new all-purpose unit—packed with exciting new features and delivering the kind of color that consumers want in their handheld GPS's. This lightweight, rugged, waterproof unit raises the bar to offer a 256-color, highly reflective display that provides easy viewing in almost any lighting condition. This transreflective TFT provides excellent viewing while maximizing your battery life. The GPSMAP is packed with extra features, including rapid automatic route calculation, an integrated outdoor calendar, a dedicated geocaching mode, and indoor/outdoor GPS games that turn the outdoors into a giant gameboard. The GPSMAP 60CS also offers an electronic compass and barometric altimeter for highland adventures. These sensors, when combined with GPS technology, provide enhanced bearing and elevation readings. -Vendor *$50 mail in rebate available until July 5th, 2005.
Bottom Line: Add some color to your life, and a compass too!
Talk shop with all the gear freaks out there: ask 'em questions, upload/browse photos, and give your 2¢.
Currently *the* GPS of choice.

Right now, this is the one to get.
Clear, bright, large screen. Excellent reception and GPS performance. Simple, intuitive user-interface. Large memory. Long battery life. And the altimeter and compass are surprisingly useful extras too. Note that the latter can (and should) be left turned off to conserve battery power.
The only competition in my view is from Garmin's color eTrex models, which share the same long battery life, and are significantly smaller and cheaper (but only slightly lighter).

I used this Gps in the jungle, and it worked brilliantly through the canopy. I only used it as a aid, and didnt use the other funtions so cant comment on them. However the fact it worked out there proves it is good !!

Having used three other GPS units before, I had a pretty good idea of what to expect when I upgraded from the Garmin Vista to this unit; however, what I got surprised me. This larger unit gets MUCH better reception than all the others that I have used and it is totally easier to navigate. The Elevation profile chart allows to scan the profile and find the exact point on the map by hitting enter. Waypoint marking is also much easier. With the new larger memory, you wont have to reload maps over and over. I would have to agree that I would like to see Garmin STEP it up on some new mapping software for this unit.

The best GPS units I've ever owned. I'm active in K9 SAR, the 60CS gets me there as its routing software is excellent, even tells me where stores are if I need to get something, has all the topo maps I need in memory, the display is great even in sunlight and the USB connection is great. I just hope software like Maptech will soon catch up with this outstanding unit. Highly recommended.
Great Unit

I had to send the first one back because of a defective on/off button. The new one is great. It has great features and is very user friendly. It is the best GPS unit that I've owned or seen. Mine works perfectly, but I only gave it 4 stars because Garmin still hasn't quite worked out the software bugs (they're close). Once they do that, this will be the unit that the standard is set by.

By far the GPSMap 60CS is the greatest GPS I have ever used. With as many features it has it very easy to use. Very clear, large backlit screen, great options to extend battery life, what more could you ask for?
