Gregory Whitney 95 Backpack - 5309-6285cu in

The Gregory Whitney 95 Backpack is built to carry loads of gear in comfort and designed so you can find it all. Twin side pockets provide entry from the sides as well as from the top, front, and bottom. The Whitney's packed with features that become more delicious with every passing mile: a hydration sleeve, canted bottle holders, V-pull compression straps, and a convertible fanny pack top pocket. Like all Gregory packs, the Whitney 95's fit and comfort are really the secret to its popularity. An adjustable waistbelt and rotating shoulder harness move to accommodate the angle of your hips, the slope of your shoulders, and the width of your neck. They work together with two aluminum stays and a floating framesheet to deliver the cushiest ride this side of a Cadillac.

Bottom Line: With the Gregory Whitney you'll be able to carry over two weeks worth of gear without feeling like a pack mule.

Must have bought a different pack...

By:
September 18, 2008

I wish I could give this pack positive reviews like everyone else. However, this pack has simply not held up over time. I really like the suspension system, it holds gear comfortably but the plastic connectors that connect the hip belt to pack have both snapped making the pack useless. I have had a lot of little problems as well. The pull tabs for the zippers will pull off if you yank on them too hard. The chest straps are simply clipped to the shoulder straps instead of sewn on and can fall off(one of mine did on the airplane on a trip out west) Also the water bottle pocket is made of a soft stretchy fabric that can rip if you have something hard attacked to the side of your pack like an ice picket. Now, granted these problems probably won't affect everyone, this pack is probably perfect for casual use. However of the last 90 days I have spent thirty in the field including twelve days in the cascades so I put it through a lot of abuse. I would not reccomend it for professional or very heavy use.

Recent (Aug '08) customer reviews of the Whitney 95 at REI web...

Recent (Aug '08) customer reviews of the Whitney 95 at REI web site describe pack "blow outs" involving hip strap tears off of frame and seam tears as well. Comments suggesting that the newer model of the W-95 may not be as well built as the older model. Has anyone else experienced similar equipment failures with this Gregory model? SteveM

Bomber backpack

Well designed, holds damn near everything, and will last forever. I haven't had any issues with it at all, and it fits me (at 6'5") phenomenally well.

GREATEST Backpack

By:
August 4, 2006

I have been using my brother in laws Whitney for the last two summers. Thought it was awesome so I bought my own. Can't wait to load it up and head to the trail. I'm well into middle age and not in the greatest of shape but this pack makes carrying a 65+ pound pack out of the 10,400 foot range easy. This is like no other pack. I love it. By the way this site had the best price on the web, by a long shot. Great experience.

Comfy, Sturdy, Roomy and Light.... all of the above!

Thumbs Up: - The feature I like the most about this is easy access points to your pack. No matter where you stuffed it, you can get to it in matter of seconds. Good for organization-freaks as well as messy-campers! - I have used this pack in snow, in heavy rain as well. I use Gregory rain cover, but even without it, it provided pretty good waterproofing. - Adjustable shoulder straps are very comfortable and I didn't feel the pack even when I was carrying a week-long worth stuff in it. Thumbs Down: - Side water-bottle holder is not convenient. My Nalgene kept falling out of it and I had to just stop using it. Overall: But overall, I am pretty happy with this pack and I definitely recommend this to any serious hiker. It's pricy of course, but you get what you paid for.

Love my Whitney

By:

This is an extremely comfortable pack that carries heavy weight extremely well. The numerous access panels on the pack are a real plus....no need for dumping out everything in your pack to find something. I love the separate pocket for a sleeping bag, but even better the fact that the bottom of the pack is made of rubber, which is essential if you’re carrying a down sleeping bag that has to stay dry. From the hydration pocket, to the rubber bottom, to the numerous access panels, this is well thought out pack. This bag is ideal for anyone traveling long distances, or with lots of weight. I Love my Whitney!!!

Gregory Whitney Backpack

By:

Excellent pack and features. Pricey, but you get what you pay for. Having a tall and lean body type, I found that I needed medium length belt pads (recommended for a 34 inch max waist/hip measurement) vs. the large length belt pads (recommended for a 34 inch min waist/hip measurement) that come standard with the large backpack frame size. Gregory Customer Service was helpful and very quick in replacing my (slightly used) belt pads with the smaller size.

Gregory Whitney Backpack

By:

Whoa! Comfortable, comfortable, comfortable. I just purchased the Whitney and although I thought it was kinda pricey, now I can see why. The waist belt, shoulder harness, and shock absorbing chest strap are all designed with comfort, and more importantly, support in mind. The only reason this backback didn't get a "5" in my book is because the barn door side pockets are kinda funky. I don't understand why Gregory put the compression straps over the tops of the side bags!! Also the front panel pocket is smaller than I anticipated. However the comfort trade-off is more than worth it (note: I'm an organization freak). Highly recommend this pack primarily due to comfort/support; I could have hiked double the miles I'm used to just because I couldn't feel the Whitney on my back!!!! I can tell after just one weekend in the Smokies that this puppy will last forever!!!!

test run whitney pack

So far I say this pack is awesome. Lots of pockets. I wish a more detailed owners manual came with the pack. It would be cool if they told you why it was designed the way it was. What they intended everything to hold.
