Charge on these

I have the 194's, 5' 10 185. I love them. Super stable at high speeds when straightlining. Turn radius is listed at 41m, but if you have to turn you can make smaller radius turns. Not actually as stiff as I thought they would be, but plow through crud very well. The upturned tips help this ski float better in pow then I thought it would. Very versatile and good for going fast. They can be a bit of a handful in very tight spots, but once you let them run it is all worth it.

More Testing Needed For Me

By: Backcountry.com Employee
May 1, 2009

I only got to ride these for 1 run in really really really heavy spring pow. I rode the 194 length. I am 5'10" 170lbs and they were too big for me (considering how stiff they are). The visibility was really low, so I was a little tentative on fully charging the crud/slush pow, but they handled great. I am used to a ski that likes to surf pow, these more just like to go down the fall line as fast as possible. I was having a little trouble getting the hang of them, but it turned out to be the snow conditions because even on my home court skis I wasn't having the best day. I would love to try these again in more ideal conditions.

Killer once I got them dialed in...

By:
April 13, 2009

I'm 5'9'' and 175lbs and got a screamin' deal on some XXL 194's. First thing, if you are my size and weight then you have to be on your game at all times and aggressive. If you are, the ski will reward you with a great ride that kills everything on the mountain and is freight train stable at speed. If not, they can hurt you. The faint of heart need not apply.

First time I took them out in 15" of fresh I had them mounted on the line and was disappointed that I was getting tip dive and the skis weren't performing as well as I would have wanted for such a fat ski. They killed the crud and groomers, but left me wanting in fresh.

Second time I took them out in 13" pow and moved the bindings back 1.5cm (rail mounted bindings) and it made a HUGE difference. Now they were a bit less solid on the hardpack but floated incredibly in the pow and were amazingly nimble for such a big ski. I could not get the skis to dive even when loading up the tips and I skied faster than I ever have before through the trees. Once you get them up to speed they are surprisingly nimble in the pow even though they aren't rockered and are relatively stiff. At slow speeds they feel sluggish and take some big legs to work them. At speed they come alive. Who wants to go slow anyway?

Anyway fun skis that are rock solid and kill everything on the mountain. Big and heavy, but that helps them not get thrown around in the crud. Not that fun in the bumps. It was possible to do it, but I'll be honest that it sucked because it was so much work. Awesome in pow once I moved the bindings back a bit. I'm happy.

I think you should ski the 187. The 194 can be a lot of ski in some situations especially since you're on the Prophet now. The 187 will be a better transition length and you can still go as fast and big as you want.

these skis want to grip and rip, nothing else. If you've got the legs and the boots to drive em these skis will charge like nothing else you've ever owned. They wont carve under 20mph but if your buying these you're not on the bunny slope anyway plus at 20+ mph they've got freight train stability. I'm 5'10" 165lbs skiing the 187 and its perfect.

I am trying to decide what length to get in the XXL. I like to ski fast and now I'm on 187s and feel like they're a little bit short. I'm 6'1" 205 and am trying to decide. Any help or insight would be great.

You're tall enough that the 194's might be a good choice...it all depends on how you ski. If you feel the 187 are coming up a little short you should go bigger!

If you ski the 187s really aggressively, but you feel they are a little short, then you almost definitely could rip the 194s.

I'm 6'1" 185 pounds and ski the 187. I find this to be plenty of ski for me and I'm happy I went with the shorter length. I consider myself a pretty strong skier in all conditions. I have never said to myself...I wish I got the 194. However, if you ski like Roner or Nobis you should go with the 194.

Buckle your seat belt and get ready to rip!!!

By:
March 23, 2009

These skis will push you harder than ever before. I rock the 194's and they eat up everything that I throw at them! Plenty of floatation for big days. They kill it in the crud. Oh and have to bomb a groomer to get to your next secret stash, don't worry they ski like a super g ski. I love rocketing past someone on a groomer with these things and then seeming them in the lift line and people always have puzzled look on their face. "So fat, so long, how can they go so fast?!" Your friends will get pissed at you as you burn through the crud. I am becomign redundant. These things straight ROCK!

hey dudes! i ski on 08 legend pros and wanna go fatter. i am thinking XXL, but worried about float. i also like the k2 obsethed. how do these skis compare? what about the czar? looking for a powder ski in general as well...suggestions?

Well, if you are looking for a bit of a fatter ski that will feel similar to your Legend Pros of 2007/2008, then you may feel right at home here. One thing though, these only like going straight. So, if that is your thing then give 'er a go.

The K2 ObSethed would be a similar feel float-wise. It will like turning a little more and would be easier on your legs overall, but it may not absolutely plow gnarly crud or point it like the XXL can.

As for the Czar, it's a strange animal. If you spend nearly all of your time off-groomed, you will love it because of the amount of tip rocker giving you a comfortable balance point. If you are on groomers half the time, you will hate it for the exact same reason.

You should also look at the Rossignol S6. It is basically the same as last year's Steeze and it is really versatile for its width.

Finally, for overall pow skis, it will depend on where you are skiing and what you like to ski. The best pow skis right now have a fair amount of rocker (reverse camber) in them, but keep in mind, the more rocker in a ski (More rocker would be the Armada ARG, less rocker would be the Salomon Lord), the less prone it is to harder snow. I would suggest the K2 Pontoon if all you are skiing is powder and that is it on a given day. If you have to take groomers to get to/from the pow, look at the Rossignol S7.

Can't go wrong

This ski is unreal. It is easier to turn that you may think. it not quite as stiff as you may have heard. the tip is soft enough that it really floats well in the soft stuff. but true to the rumors, it is stiff enough that it rips the hard pack and crud you will encounter. if you want a true big mountain ski this is it.

Pretty heavy and definitely stiff. Not going to want the same ski for tight trees and 50+ foot cliffs. 187 for the trees and a tighter radius, 194s for the drops. At your height, I would say you could handle the 194s.

These are the best ski's that I have ever had the privilege of placing in the snow. In deep snow they feel very light under foot, and on the cuiser runs they carve all day long, in the crud they rock. Buy these skis and you will not be disappointed.

Bomber Ski

By:
December 9, 2008

If you want a ski that can blast through crud, charge in powder, and handle abuse, this is your ski. It is designed for an aggressive, strong, and heavier skier (194cm). However the shorter version (187cm) is surprisingly agile enough for almost any advanced skier. Overall, whichever size you buy, it is one of the best (or is the best) big mountain chargers out there!

hey, i am wondering how these compare to my '07 legend pros, 187cm i ski now? i hear they are softer? i am looking to upgrade to a fatter ski...i love and ski my legends now for everything from bumps to tight trees. i am an aggressive strong skier and want some extra float but want the same ride...how do the '09 legend pros XXL ski? i can't seem to demo them anywhere! also, i am wondering about peoples thoughts on the S7...durability and flex..are they too soft to open it up on them? i love my legends, but thinking i could go with something playful...

The XXL is bigger, floatier, and faster than your Legend Pro. The 187 is a great length and you can ski it all over the mountain. I ski the XXL all the time and it holds up to just about anything I want from a ski. It is well built, strong ski but it is not the most forgiving and playful ski. This is a ski if your ready to ride fast, hard and send it big!

I own the 187cm ski with Jester bindings. Din: 12 Rider - 1741bs, 5 9", Canadian. Dude These skis are the ultimate free riders ski. Go fast through POW and drop huge lines down steeps. Even carve it up or straight line down on piste and create insane speeds. This ski will wear out your legs eventually , but the ride is well worth it. I ski it 7 days of the week here in Whistler. Get the 194 if you want a heli-ski or for sledding.
