Whether or not this is a good pack for school completely depends on your needs. There's a fair amount of padding on the pack, but it's also big. Bigger packs = bigger loads, meaning most people cram more junk into their packs than they need and carry around dead weight.
Also, if you need to carry around a laptop, this pack probably isn't that great of an idea.
I personally prefer a messenger bag, having a single compartment for all of my gear makes things easy to find, makes sure that I keep it relatively tidy, and they're great for commuting by bike.
