Awesome, but large

By:
December 22, 2008

I got the large and I love it, except when I'm backpacking. My fault, I should gotten a smaller one. Anyways, the pad is great. It's more comfy than a lot of mattresses I've slept on. My dad needed to use it and he's DEFINITELY one to complain if he had anything less than a good night's sleep. But the next morning he was just as happy as ever. Great pad, but if you're going to use it for backpacking get the smaller one.

Flag

This is going to have a urethane finish, so you can wash the outside and you are not going to have to worry about the inside.

Great for the big man..

X-Large suited me well. I'm 6-4, 240 lbs. I thought it very impressive that something with little depth would insulate me so well from the cold ground. Further, I'm a side sleeper so the hard ground has always made for a difficult nights sleep. But I had no issues on the cold nights, sleeping well on my side without any realization that the cold hard ground was less than a couple of inches away.

My No. 1 Outdoor Equipment

I used this on my winter snow camping, and also I use it home. Very versatile uses and I love it's ability to protect my body from winter chilling ground. So I recommended it to my internet camping community colleagues. Use it and feel it. Very comfort and warm, even hot.

The base camp is a comfortable pad that works for the car camper to the occasional backpacker. I highly recommend the ThermaRest line in general for comfort and value.

Wonderful for any camper

I love my Therm-a-rest sleeping pads! They are really comfortable, keep you warm, and are not too heavy. I use mine for everything from car camping to short backpacking trips. (They are too heavy for longer backpacking trips.) I just set mine on my sleeping bag and let it inflate while I get everything else set up.

It self-inflates, so all you have to do is give a few extra puffs and you're good to go. Really warm and thick, so no worries about cold ground. Awesome car camping/base camp pad!

Very Comfortable

When car camping throughout the year, this is a great sleeping pad. It even works great in a tent on the snow due to the high R value. If weight is not an issue & you want to sleep very comfortably, this pad is for you.

Awesome pad!

I love this pad, I bought the XL, because I'm a larger guy, and it works perfectly with my marmot trestles X-Wide bag. Easily the most comfortable pad I've ever used, probably not for backpacking, but I would consider it because I was so comfortable. I slept on rock, and had no shoulder or hip discomfort when I woke up. Easily more comfortable than probably three out of the last four real mattresses I've had.

Very comfortable! Minimal work to set it up, I mean come on, it inflates itself! No more noisy air pumps or blowing up a mattress for me.

Best of Both Worlds.

We camp at developed campgrounds and in the backcountry woods of New England. We bring our Therm-a-Rest Base Camp Pads to both places, as they are fairly light and compact, but most importantly, comfortable. Sure there are lighter and more compact pads, but we are not hiking the AT, so an extra pound doesn't really matter - and is definitely worth the extra comfort.

Base Camp Rocks

By:

I used the sleeping mats in a recent trip to the Bighorn Mountains - we got rain and lots of it, along with snow, sleet and hail. The mats worked above and beyond my expectations, and were the most comfortable of any mats ever tried and they dried out very quickly when they got wet - and they did. I would recommend them to anybody without question or hesitation!

A great choice!

I never used a self-inflating mattress before but boy was I glad I had it two weekends ago. It was 40 degrees and I definitely think this mattress helped keep me warm and comfortable. The self-inflating part is very cool, it just takes a little work to get it deflated again and into the stuff sack. Absolutely worth the effort, though!

Excellent sleeping pads

This is the first self-inflating sleeping pad that I have bought, and I love it. I was surprised how comfotable it is to sleep on. These are great sleeping pads for car camping, which I do more than not. They do not come with a bag or strap or anything, but I just use some webbing sinch-straps and that works fine for me.

I'm strictly a car camper, so the size of this Thermarest was not an issue for me. I took it to the Coachella festival and I have to say it was better than some of the hotel beds that I slept in on my trip. The self-inflation thing is mysterious and magical, although it takes some time to happen.
