Therm-a-Rest ProLite 4 Sleeping Pad

The Therm-a-Rest ProLite 4 is the lightest, most compact, four-season self-inflating mattress ever made. The ProLite line of mattresses belongs to the Fast & Light Series from Therm-a-Rest. They are engineered to accommodate those who need to carry everything to survive—from alpinists to adventure racers and long-distance backpackers. Therm-a-Rest's proprietary foam is 20% lighter and traps more air than previous models, making it warmer and far easier to carry. The ProLite 4 is thick enough for four-season use, and features a sticky-dot non-slip surface that ensures your mattress stays put for a full night's sleep. Compatible with the Lite Chair Kit for added backcountry comfort. Pair it up with a Fast & Light Stuff Sack for protection and portability.

Bottom Line: The ultimate in lightweight, compressible, four-season sleep systems for backcountry addicts.

This pad kicks some gnarly ass! I used to sleep on a insul mat max thermo and it was real uncomfortable. This pad is so much better. Its comfortable and insulates from the cold ground so well. I love the little chair attachment that you can fold the pad in. Its great for sitting around the fire. Buy this pad.

Thermarest makes the most bitchin' sleep pads on the market. People will take you wayyyyyyy more seriously if you have this amazing stuff in your pack.

It's okay to want cool looking things, but don't sacrifice performance for that either. This pad is seriously one of the best out there, and even if you don't think it looks the coolest, you'll still have the very best.

You are just scared of going orange, and we understand. Look, you will be able to see your sleeping pad a lot better now as well as other people being able to see it better, look at it that way. If you get stuck in an avalanche maybe the 'k-kool orange' color will save your life.

Ah, perhaps an Orange sleeping bag will up the coolness factor of the sleeping pad.

Then again consider that the mojority of the time the pad is out of your bag your eyes will be closed because the pad is so comfy.

best four-season pad out there

By:

Very light and compact but thick enough to give you a comfortable night's sleep. Helped keep me warm in temps in the teens. Very easy and fast self-inflation means you only have to blow into it for a minute or two and you won't have to drag a pump around. Comes with a stuff sack and to pack it up it is as easy as unscrewing the mouth adapter and rolling it up. It may be more expensive than other brands, but it is definitely worth it.

Wonderful

This pad is great. You need to blow it up yourself a little if you want full capacity and it doesn't come with a bag to hold the pad, but as far as how the pad functions, it definitely gets 5 start. It keeps the cold ground off your back while sleeping. I also have a pad like this made by another brand and this one works better and when not in use, it stores in a smaller area.

Sleep well

By:
December 31, 2008

Years ago I did a 21 day traverse with a sleeping pad that was too thin and not warm enough. I suffered. With this pad, I sleep well, am warm, and it packs down way thinner than any pad I have ever had. It's so much easier to have a big day in the mountains if you have slept well the night before.

Between Big Agnes and Thermarest pads, the choice comes down to inflation. I wanted self-inflation so I chose the Thermarest. Read the other reviews for other reasons to get this pad.

One of my favorite pieces of gear. I have owned this pad for over 3 years and it still works like the day I bought it: fantastically! It is comfy, warm, easy to pack, light, and small. Unless you prefer a folding pad for packing reasons, I would not recommend any other pad.

Great pad, very light, very comfortable; only down side is trying to fit it into the prolite 3 stuff sack. When I bought it there was no prolite 4 sack so its a very tight fit. For the price they should come with a stuff sack!!!!

Bed away from bed...

By:
November 9, 2008

I slept on this pad for 12 nights during spring break backpacking in Utah, it was like having my bed with me. It got down to 19 deg. at night and I was well insulated with this pad. I'm 6'2" 200 lbs, and I have the large, and I love it. However, it should come with a stuff sack and repair kit like the comparable pad from REI does.

Perfect pad, I have had mine for almost 4 years, gets better every year! I use mine inside my sleeping bacg, inside a hammock and it is great. More air, more firm....less air, less firm, however I'm feeling, that's what I get! I would not look anywhere else for a light 4 season open cell foam pad.

Great pad

By:
November 2, 2008

Just used one of these on a rim-to-rim Grand Canyon hike. 'Self-inflating' is a bit of an exaggeration, but a few breaths did it nicely--a very easy inflate. Actually, you can get it back in its sack, if you get absolutely all the air out of it. But it's still a tight fit. I was amazed at how comfortable this pad was, fiven that it is very thin. No reservations recommending this item.

Amazingly comfortable! I was so surprised. Easy to roll up and put away. Perfect size. I have a big Agnes sleeping bag and this pad fits perfectly in the sleeve on the back of the bag and together it was a great bed. I could roll abound in my bag and not fall off the pad. So very happy. Great sleeping. Unless you are camping in a campsite that is closed for bear activity, then you wont sleep much no matter how comfy you are. Every creak in the trees will wake ya

Nice Pad

By:
October 15, 2008

I have the Long size (me, Papa Grande) and the Regular size (12 yr old son). Agree completely with other reviewers on a few things - first off, great pads to sleep on. I sleep on my side and this pad is comfortable. They do not "self inflate" in any time limit I was willing to give them. I suppose if I left them out all day they would, but I can't envision that ever happening. "Several" breaths (more than two, less than a gazillion) are needed to blow them up. I pretty much replace all stock stuff sacks with waterproof ones anyway, and the ones I have for these are larger than stock so I do not have that issue. Overall a very nice, albeit pricey set of pads that I would buy again.

Definitely a great pad

By:
September 17, 2008

Ok - I've suffered with foam ThermaRest and Z-Rest pads for years and toss and turn the latter half of every night due to painful pressure on my hip bones and shoulders. I have also used the Camp Rest pads with the same effect. This pad with a little extra air pressure in it is the BOMB! After the first night, I didn't even think about it for an hour after I got up in the morning, and then I realized that I hadn't had any painful awakenings in the middle of the night! My snap decision to go with an extra 1/2 inch of padding (ProLite 4 vs. 3) has really paid off in all of my trips. People are right, though - don't expect to get the pad back into that plastic sleeve. I'm sure they have a hydraulic press to put it in there in the factory. Just throw the wrapper away and get a little stuff sack - save your fingers:)

It's very good pad!

By:
September 9, 2008

I love it. I have two and they are both very quality built. They DON'T self inflate unless you have quite a bit of time to let them lay out after you unroll them. I tend to set up camp late and want them inflated fast so I have to blow into them. Very light and comfortable. I used the first one for a couple years and then bought my girlfiend one just like mine because I knew it was a good sleep pad. It's also very warm in cool weather. On 45-55 degree nights, the ground temp is unnoticable. I haven't had it in any colder weather than that yet. It does take a little effort to get it rolled up small again but that's part of it. Hope this helps. Happy camping!

Prolite 4 Reg

By:
August 25, 2008

I just recently spent 63 continuous days on a Prolite 4. The conditions ranged from solid rock to, large cobble. Needless to say, works like a charm. No issues with the toughness of the material, valve, or weight. I will admit that I was apprehensive about spending the money, after the fact one of best pieces of gear I have in the arsenal...

Great pad, but maybe a bit of overkill for my needs.

By:
August 23, 2008

This pad is great. I have been using a thermarest, as well as a couple other brands off and on, and this is the best yet by far. For such a thick pad it packs very small. I probably could have gotten away with the 3-season variant, however, and saved space (and a bit of weight.) I don't sleep in weather much colder than about 0/-20, and I think the 3-season would have been fine. The length (contrary to other comments) is perfect for me. I am 6 feet and have plenty of room for my feet, even with my head all the way on the pad.

I had been using the Thermarest Ultralite (which rolls up to a very small size) for the past 7 years and have felt it never quite provided sufficient cushioning for a side sleeper such as myself. So i decided to upgrade to the Prolite4 as it does provide an extra half inch thickness. It did make a huge difference! It is very confortable even for a side sleeper. Furthermore, it rolls up to quite a small size. When put into the stuff sack, it is almost as small as the old Ultralite model. The quality is very good like all other Thermarest products. A great lightweight sleep pad.

Worked fine, but read the specs closely

By:
August 6, 2008

This pad is light and rolls up small. However, it is quite a bit narrower than I anticipated (should have read the Specs more closely). The padding seemed okay - I slept as comfortably as I usually do. However, I'm 6'0" and 195 lbs, so there's not much roll-around space for me. Plus, my toes creep off the end, or I have to double up whatever wad of clothes I use for my pillow because it is off the other end of the pad. My advice: read the specs closely. If I had I would have gotten the Long size. I'll be keeping this one, though it may go to one of my teenaged kids.

I have a lower fused back and I am really picky when it comes to sleeping pads. Thermarests have really been the way for me to go, to be able to get good sleep. I got the Women's long, fits me great. I am 5'8". It is warm and comfortable and I do not know how I lived life with out this! I love that it is pink also. Blows up SUPER fast and is really easy to roll up and hit the trail with. It does not come with a stuff sack, so buy the stuff sack separately if you want one.

You can simply open the valve for self inflation, or you can blow it full with your own lungs. I recommend self inflation, it keeps the condensation out.

You fill it with as much as air as you would like in terms of comfort. I like to let it expand on its own, and then give it a couple of full breaths to pump it up all the way. It really inflates almost by itself. The real trick and part that people need to learn is the deflation technique. Simply fold it over a few times so you can sit on it and then go ahead and press all the air out of it. After you are sitting on it with all the air out of the pad simply lock the twist cap and it will be perma-deflated. Fold it once like a hot dog bun and roll. As you are rolling at the very end I like to undo the twist cap again for a second to get the remaining air out, and then re-tighten when fully done.

Really comfy!

By:
June 26, 2008

I have used my new pad (ThermaRest) 2 times now, and the comfort level is great! Because it is thin compared to a blow up mattress, there is a lot of support and yet it is still soft and I slept like a baby. When you consider what a good night's sleep will do for you, this thing was one of the best gear purchases I have ever decided to make. I also sent this along with my son to his Philmont Scout trip and he used it for 10 days hiking in New Mexico and other than a little dirt, the pad is no worse for the use. He also said "The pad was really comfortable and kept him warm in the cool desert evenings.

June 8, 2008

just did a first test run of my new woman's reg. after reading the instructions i've been keeping it unrolled, but with the valve open and out of the sun for storage, so when i took it to yosemite last weekend it reinflated quickly and was ridiculously comfortable to sleep on. my boyfriend has an older model which he'd kept rolled up between trips for years, so it needed some more help on the inflation and wasn't able to achieve the same level of blissful poofiness

The item was somewhat expensive, but continues to perform flawlessly. I sleep better on the ProLite 4 than I do on my own bed. Seriously. I use it with a cheap sleeping bag in a thin-floored tent with no footprint or any other padding. Cleaning it is also really easy, just warm water and a little soap. Overall, one of the best things I've ever bought.

This thing... oh this thing. If I had to choose between this and my tent on backpacking or climbing trips I would for sure choose this. If you've never used a Thermarest they are well worth the money. Not only are they so much softer than normal foam pads the air works as an excellent insulator so you stay much warmer at night. Also, it stays flat while foam pads roll up under you occasionally. The fabric on this is grippy ( the only way i know to describe it) it just keeps you on the pad all night rather than slipping off of it. mostly because you sink into it to a degree. Not only does this pad have all of these great benefits, its also comfy. I wouldn't go with anything else.

My back is happy!

By:
May 12, 2008

After a long desert haul, it was great to set up the tent and make the pad into the chair. After dinner and drinks, it was time to hit the tent for some sleep, taking the pad out of the chair was easy. This pad allows for a great night's rest with plenty of support and comfort. I was ready to go the next day. That is worth a lot to a 43 year old guy that works in a cubical all week. I retired my older Thermarest and saved a pound or two, making it an easier load overall. Get the stuff sack and the chair, they are worth it. A little pricey but this stuff is made to last you many years to come. An investment but it pays off. Happy backs make for much nicer backpacking trips.
