The Burton Women’s 20L Day Hiker Pack has an easy-access shovel pocket, so make sure you use it. You wouldn’t want to be hiking around in the backcountry without a friend-digger-outer, would you? is there a sternum strap?

It really looks like it. You can see a small band across the shoulder straps around where a sternum strap would attach (look at the pop camo picture).
