Flag

The gate opens to just under an inch (for the bent gate, less for the straight), but since most climbing ropes are 10mm or less these days (a little under half an inch), it's not geared to bear huge amounts of weight from a big rope. I'd say 5/8" is the biggest you'd want to run through it.
