This is a great set for a day of top roping or as a backup device. It's very nice for beginners. The biner is really nice too as the square shape gives it more holding power. I mostly use my ATC Guide now for lead climbing but generally carry this as a backup.

The biggest problem with these types of belay devices is that they don't have the
"V" feature for locking off like the Black diamond ATC-XP. It is good for beginners, but the ATC-XP is much better.

Light and Robust

The Black Diamond ATC is required equipment in most Adventure Races for a few simple reasons; It is easy to operate, lightweight, compact and doesn't destroy or twist ropes. The package is extremely good value with the locking carabiner but I wish they would have packaged it with a smaller lighter locking carabiner.

This is the classic belay device-carabiner combo! it's perfect for the beginning climber who just wants to get out for a day, and for expert climbers spending days on the wall. The package will save you a few dollars on buying the items separately.

It never hurts to get a deal by buying these in a package.Not a bad idea to have a few extra lying around as well. There are better devices than the ATC, but don’t you feel attached to your first belay device?

Being a novice climber, I wasn’t exactly sure what all I needed to start climbing, but after talking to the experienced and knowledgeable staff, they recommended the Black Diamond Big Air Package. I was greatly satisfied with this product and would recommend it to any beginner climber.
