Black Diamond Turbo Ice Screws

Black Diamond Tubular Ice Screws are made for the climber who values life and isn't willing to mess with sub-par designs when the chips are down. In desperate situations seconds count. And when it's one screw between you and the deck, quality counts. That's why Black Diamond Tubular Ice Screws are made from 4130 aircraft-quality seamless steel tubes, pierced and cold-drawn for superior strength. The teeth are cut on a vertical mill then heat treated and plated with bright nickel. With aggressive threads for holding power and tapered tubes for ease of placement, this is a screw that cuts sharp, pitch after pitch, year after year.

Bottom Line: High strength and durability for years of solid placements.

Great performer; old-school style.

Even if these screws place more slowly than every other screw, they are still great for setting up a belay or TR, and we save on the price. A nice price point screw!

The king of screws

Black Diamond screws are the best hands down. Petzl's may have all sorts of gimicks, Grivels feel a bit sharper when new, and OP screws might be a bit easier on the wallet, but for long term use, and a screw that keeps its bite year after year, these are the goods.

If you think these screws won't go in because they don't have a $30 spinning doodad on the hanger, think again. Once you get the screw started, press the circular cupped part at the center of your palm against the arched part of the ergonomic hanger. Then twist your arm in a circular motion, like you're waxing a car. The ergonomic hanger will spin in your cupped palm just as fast as the Petzl, Grivel or BD Turbo Express screws, but with an added benefit: Because you're pushing on the screw closer to the tube (i.e., not at the end of some long spinner on the hanger), more energy goes to pushing it into the ice. Carrying a few of the Grivel screws is prudent, since they fit between features, but the simple BD ones will take you far. Plus, with the all money you save, you can buy a donkey or something to carry your gear for you on the approach.

This is absolutely a winner for the ice screws. They are so sharp that they are very easy to put into ice. Nice Design and no problems found whatsoever. Definitely worth its money.
