So Stoic's going away

  • Familiarity:I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
  • Fit:Runs small

I got a screaming deal last season on this Stoic Welder Hi Softshell Jacket, to wear on more blustery days of XC skiing here in Western Colorado. Probably because (I hear) Backcountry is discontinuing this in-house brand of clothing and gear. I'm 5'7" and on the "curvy" side. I got an XL so I could wear layers underneath, but Stoic runs small, so a baselayer was honestly all that would reasonably fit under this. However... This IS a very warm jacket with the crazy Muppet-like lofty fleece lining, even in pret-ty chilly temps. I wore this baby XC skiing on a windy, snowy day at about 10-11,000 feet with a SmartWool mid-weight baselayer under it. It kept me warm in the 30's, with fresh powder coming down. It will be too warm for vigorous activity in warmer temps. The jacket seems well-made, but I've only worn it out a couple times. It's sharp-looking enough to wear about town, so it's nice if you live where winters are "brisk". I'd grab the deal on the Welder Lo Softshell while it's still available, if you don't mind the super-loud coral color, or the "Mist" white. So now what, Backcountry?

Awesome jacket

  • Familiarity:I've used it several times
  • Fit:Runs small

I was looking for a solid warm outer layer that would be easy to move around in as well, and saw this on Steep and Cheap for a steal at about $80. Wow. The other reviewers are spot on when they say this is the warmest, softest, coziest jacket.

I've worn it in sleet so far and it shed moisture well. It would be too hot for temps above the 40s or 50s, and kept me toasty with just a long sleeve shirt on in 30s.

I wear a small in almost everything, but went with a medium in the jacket. I have broad shoulders and big ta-tas so ladies with smaller chests and small shoulders might could get away with their usual size.

Arms are a bit long and I can fit a snug baselayer or two underneath without feeling too restricted. This jacket would have been much too small if I'd ordered it in my usual size. I'm 5'2'' 120lbs 29'' waist, 36'' bust.

Super cozy

  • Familiarity:I've used it several times
  • Fit:Runs large

The lining in this jacket is so incredibly soft! I wish all my clothes were made of that material! It's a good looking jacket, fits well, and moves well. It also is much more compressible than regular softshells, which is nice. I bought it specifically for climbing, but because the wrists don't have any kind of closure to make them smaller, it doesn't really work for that because I can't push the sleeves up or tighten them to make them stay. Rolling them up doesn't really work. So, it's not a great climbing jacket, but it's so cozy I kept it anyway. The jacket runs large (and long) so definitely go with a smaller size if you are trying to decide. I'm 5"5', 105 lbs. 30x24x35 and I wear an XS and there's plenty of room to spare. Also the color is darker than in the picture.

GREAT COAT!! Color different online

  • Familiarity:I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
  • Fit:True to size

My wife says: This coat is warm, and oh so comfy. The fit is perfect. Loose in all the right spots, but tailored so that it is flattering. The color online doesn't come across right though. It looks pink online, but it is actually more maroon or burgundy. I think I like it better in person because it is more subdued.

Stoic is Awesome!

I got this jacket in the Forest/Agave for a girl I know and she loves it. Says it's super soft and keeps her warm down to probably 20F without any extra layers underneath. She uses the jacket all the time now. The coloring on the picture is pretty true to the Forest. The pink and the agave colors are much more tame in person though.

    So Very Comfortable

    • Familiarity:I've used it several times

The inside of this jacket is the softest, warmest, best fleece lining EVER!!! It feels so good on the skin that I want to wear it naked. I havent tried sking with this jacket and am not sure that it is technically right for sking (may be too warm on the inside and not waterproof enough on the outside) but I do absolutely love this as an everyday cold weather walk around town jacket. It looks AMAZING!!! I am 5'2" and 130 lbs with 34DD breasts and got this in a size Medium for an absolutely PERFECT FIT.

    Unique Softshell

    • Familiarity:I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

Great quality and feminine cut, although the arms are a bit tight as the thick pile insulation lines the entire jacket. Even so, it does have some stretchy give. I don't imagine I'd have to wear anything but a single layer under it, so I hope this won;t become a problem. I tried a size up but it was way too big in the bust. Size small for my 5'5" 133 34A. I plan to use it for mild to moderately cold front/sidecountry skiing and around town. I imagine the pit zips (have a mesh vent when unzipped) will be very useful.

The magenta/ kelly green color combo is also unique - wish I could have seen the other forest color in person as computer photos are not that accurate, and it might have been preferable. The pink is not nearly as bright as is shown.

It is hard to find a truly warm soft shell. My first purchase of this brand and so far, so good.

    Wildly warm and snazzy

I purchased this jacket for my girlfriend for ice climbing and she loves it! The grid fleece on the inside is warmer and thicker than expected, definitely a positive feature. The pit zips are not very long, so not sure how much ventilation they actually offer, but this softshell shouldn't be worn in conditions where you would need to dump heat. The length is just long enough to stay tucked into a harness and not pull through when swinging tools above your head. The pink color is definitely not as bright as in the picture, more of a pink/purple in reality (which was a good thing). Stoic fits small, my girlfriend is 5'8" and 140 lbs, athletic build and the medium fits well w/ the R1 Hoody baselayer.

      • Familiarity:I've put it through the wringer

I bought this jacket on a whim not knowing what to expect. So far, I am LOVING it! It's a nice fitted fit and looks very nice and feminine. The inside fleece is just soooo soft and comfy that if you wear a t-shirt under it, you will still be super comfy The water resistance is great. I was just out in a rain storm and it held up quite nicely. I couldn't decide on the color at first, but I went with the agave with pink zippers. It's pretty cool looking. The outside material is also soft and feels quite nice. I highly highly recommend this jacket if you're looking for a mid weight late fall/early winter jacket to run around in.

      Great jacket

      • Familiarity:I returned this product before using it

This is a great jacket, but unfortunately just wasn't for me. It has a great fit and is amazingly warm. The only reason i returned it is that I wasn't in love with the color. However, I would still highly recommended it based on the high quality and style.

I couldn't be happier with the jacket

I couldn't be happier with the jacket. It is extremely functional and stylish all at the same time. Haha. I love the adjustable waist, it helps the jacket fit just right to my frame to retain warmth. Having the fleece be in the sleeves and pockets in addition to the body of the jacket is a huge plus. As a boulder, it's really awesome to be able to keep my hands warm until it's time to put hand to rock. :) The majority of women's jackets I've had have a super small and uncomfortable fitting hood. This jacket has the PERFECT hood. Plenty of space and designed to fit comfortably without awkwardly pulling on my hair and such. The under arm zipper vents are great for more moderate weather, I can still wear my jacket to fend off a breeze but not over roast. I use the chest pocket all the time. I've gotten a lot of compliments on the color scheme, and what girl wouldn't love pink zippers?! The jacked does have a bit of weight to it so I wouldn't ever wear it on any serious adventures. For day to day winter warmth and comfort in the outdoors, this jacket is perfect.

        Love, Love, Love it

        • Familiarity:I've used it several times

This is my new go-to cold weather jacket. I wear it every morning and night when I take my dog to the park. I already owned the Welder Lo Fleece version and always had to layer it with a long sleeve to get the warmth I needed. With the Hi Fleece, I just throw it on over a tank top and head out of the house, which is exactly what I was looking for.

As a note: The Boysenberry is not as pink as it looks in the photo. I was actually a little nervous buying such a bright colored jacket, but was pleasantly surprised at the gorgeous raspberry/fuchsia/magenta color it turned out to be.

As for size: I'm 5'5", 115lbs and was torn between the XS and S. I went with the S, and it fits perfectly.

I get so many compliments on it and recommend it to everyone.

        Love, Love, Love it

        How to wash?

My brother bought this jacket for me and I absolutely love it! However, it needs to be washed after the most recent mountain adventure. What is the best way to wash it to prevent any damage to the waterproofing, wind proofing, and soft fluffy inner layer?

        Best Answer

You'll want to get Tech wash from nikwax in order to clean the jacket first then afterwards you should use a waterproofing agent specifically designed for softshells. Since there is a fleece backing you'd probably want to use a spray. Here are some links with options.

        Colour and Fit?

Can anyone comment on on the forest/agave colour? Is the screen pic a true representation? Other thoughts on the jacket fit and performance? I am 5'4, 125lbs, 34D and would appreciate any insight on fit as well! (not sure to go Small or Medium?)
