Great Lightweight Jacket

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: Runs small

My current jacket has no vents, I needed a lightweight jacket that would fit over another layer on cold days. I usually wear an xs or s, but the medium fits perfect with or with a thicker layer underneath. Good jacket, great price!

Good jacket

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size

this is a good jacket for the price. Does an excellent job of keeping me dry. I think I could do with a half size bigger and it's quite short as well as stiff but I'm pretty happy with it

Good Jacket

  • Familiarity: I gave it as a gift but have feedback to share
  • Fit: True to size

I bought this jacket for my gf and she really likes it. Like others have said, the velcro-ish wrist straps are a complete joke, but that's not really a deal breaker. The overall quality looked good to me, and the price was right. I actually thought about getting myself the men's version, but the reviews about being tight through the armpits scared me off as this is a common problem for me. Overall I would recommend this jacket for sure.

Love EVERYTHING about this jacket!

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: Runs small

Bought a medium for my 5'4, 125lb frame, knowing Stoic fits small, and it fits great. Love everything about this jacket from the dark forest colour, the sturdy zipper construction, it's super warm and waterproof, great for spring skiing over a base or mid layer! Only thing I'd fix is the velcro wrist closures are a hard plastic piece that doesn't seem to stick properly to the velcro material on the actual wrist sleeve. For the sale price, this is an excellent jacket! I might just buy another one in red!

NIce but Not It

  • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
  • Fit: Runs small

NIce jacket with a nice finish and features. I bought it for my wife but it just didn't work out. Out of all of her other jackets (REi, TNF, REI) whe wears a medium but this medium was pretty tight. It also did not come down very far....a large might have.

Great jacket except for the armpit zippr

  • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
  • Fit: True to size

Great colors, fitted jacket. I bought large. I am athletic, but skinny. 6.2 170lb with long arms and legs. Love the design, the material, the weight. However I could not use it. The zipper at the armpit does not bend well. It feels tight and at the armpit and makes this really uncomfortable. I probably have bigger than avg. lat muscles. The fit would be great otherwise. I returned it.

good quality

  • Familiarity: I gave it as a gift but have feedback to share

I gave this as a gift to my brother's GF when they moved out to PDX together. She loves it. Pretty lightweight and really packable to fit in a bag and pull out when needed for the frequent rain there. Needs pockets though. i don't know what Stoic was thinking not including them. Be aware, NO POCKETS! For a more technical jacket, I could see leaving out the pockets for weight/WP reasons, but as a more ubiquitous piece, pockets are necessary.

Nice Fit, Missing Quality

  • Familiarity: I gave it as a gift but have feedback to share

We've been using the jacket for 6 months and love the fit. It is a very slim, womanly shape with some very different colors. My girlfriend could even get over not having any pockets because she loved the flattering flare at the hips. Unfortunately, like a lot of other reviewers, the (non) velcro sleeve clasps drove her crazy. They never really held tight, were always flapping around, and generally suck. In the end she just rolled up the end of the sleeve to make due.

The final nail in the coffin for this jacket came when the waterproof material started to come apart from the inner layer. It is happening in a few spots, mainly along zippers and seams. An unacceptable turn when living in a wet area like Anchorage, Alaska. So we are returning it. It was a likable product until its water resistant fabric gave up.

Fits awkwardly

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: Runs small

Loved the color of the jacket and its ability to keep you dry in lighter rain. HOWEVER (and that is a big however), the fit of the back/armpit area makes this purchase completely not worth it--very tight! I have broad shoulders and a slim waist (5'8, 148 lbs) At first, I thought I would maybe be able to get over it, but it is very uncomfortable. It's too bad because the length of the sleeves and bottom is perfect. I would definitely look to the other brands before purchasing a Stoic product again.

Same with me the zipper at the armpit makes this really uncomfortable. I can't use it either. I do have bigger than avg. lat muscles. The fit would be great otherwise nice and fitted, but the zipper ruined everything. The material very good and lightweight.

Worth the sale

This jacket is a great value if you're able to catch it while it's on sale.

Stoic gear always looks nice, and has a flattering cut, though like in previous reviews, the arm pits are sewn a little tight. Be sure to size up! They will fit small, but be long in the sleeves.

Velcro cuffs seem to be pointless. I will probably end up cutting them off since they don't stick at all.

Normal pocket placements on rain jackets is useless when you're backpacking, or ski touring with a pack. The waistbelt goes directly over where pockets normally go, making them inaccessible.

The other option would be to have pockets at your rib cage, which would be quite uncomfortable to keep your hands in. So I think Stoic made the right choice and took them out all together. (Waist belts all seem to have little stash pockets anyways)

All that aside, we were able to get a good impression of the jacket the other day while being caught out in a rain storm. The jacket did great. The outer fabric did get wet after some time, but water did not pass through all layers of the jacket keeping us dry. It also dried up very quickly once the rain stopped.

While the jacket is very functional, it would be great if it wasn't designed to fit perfectly on a Barbie doll.

My girlfriend is 5'11, 140lbs and large works best

    Flattering, but tight at armpits

I love that this rain jacket is flattering (comes in a bit at the waist), compared to the Marmot Precip jacket (the main reason I chose it over the Precip), but it is just a little too tight around the armpit area. It's just ever so slightly heavier weight than the Marmot Precip, which is nice for layering/wind protection while still being packable. The jacket seems well made and has a nice hood.

I found it to be true to size, but you should order up if you want to do a fair amount of layering underneath. As another reviewer noted, I also really wish it had hand pockets!

      Runs small & no pockets

i'm usually a xs petite but this jacket (I tried in xs) was snug on the waist. the zippers under the arms were awkwardly uncomfortable. the sleeves were a tad too long for a petite so it'll probably be perfect for non-petites. lastly, there are no pockets . Love the color-way and how light it was. had to return.

        good waterproof jacket

I bought this jacket cause I was taking a trip to New Orleans and it was suppose to dump the entire time. Just as promised, it arrived the day before I left. I wore it on a 2 hours walking tour of the city while it just poured. I was worried I was soaking through, because it looked like it from the outside, but insider I never got wet. It is really lightweight and rolls up pretty small. I am a medium but I bought a large and the shoulders are still a little tight. I got used to it pretty fast, but I don't think my shoulders would have fit in a medium. And in the large I can fit a light jacket underneath for extra warmth. The only thing is I wish is that it had more pockets, but I guess that would just be more places to leak.

          runs small, fits strangely

          • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I had nearly worn out my Marmot Strato, so I decided to give the Vaporshell a shot when it dropped to <$50 during the holiday sale. Although it is functional- no moisture made it through to the inside- I was disappointed. The jacket runs small overall, is cut very slim through the torso, and feels oddly binding when fully zipped. Plus, I thought I could live without hand pockets...but I can't. :(

useful pocketless shell - slim fit

          • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Unlike the reviewer under me, no one except for me compliments my rain shell. Got it in Light Jade/Dark Jade. I like the colors and the contrast zip color. Good traction on the zip pull (silicone carpet?), not two way zip. The shell is nice & fitted, I can put it over an ordinary sweatshirty type hoody. Not sure if it will fit over a giant puffy, but I havent tried. Will fit over the smaller down insulation. I like the slim cut, it is flattering and sleek. It is also a good length for me, but I am like 5 feet so I don't know about the taller girls. I did get an XS. The material doesn't stretch. There are armpit zips which open to holes (not a mesh), and a chest pocket, but no hand pockets. As the outer-most garment (always, who would wear their rain shield under anything else?) I want somewhere to put my hands. Sure, the pockets might fill with water, but I don't know what to do with my many hands otherwise. Has a wrist velcro thing to keep it tight against water. I wore this on a drizzly day, and it kept me dry. No complaints there. I like the hood, otherwise rain would go into the neck area defeatingthe purpose of the shell. Hood section has a visor like area so water doesn't get on your face. Sleeves are a bit long (I have short arms) so I rolled it up and exposed the white inside, which got dirty. I put it in the washing machine but the dirt did not wash away from the inside material.

I wouldn't want to wear this shell by itself, against my skin. Feels like plastic impregnated fabric. But over clothes, it feels fine. Overall, I am happy with this shell esp b/c I got it on sale and will not be buying other shells.

          too small

          • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it

Bought the jacket, tried it on, returned it for a larger size, that one was too small, just not designed to fit across the shoulders. too bad because the sleeves were long enough, a tough thing to find for me as I have long arms.

I am going on a study abroad trip in the spring and we are going through mostly southern Europe and I was wondering how this jacket would hold up as a top layer jacket if I layered underneath. I am trying to pack as lightly as possible.

I own this jacket and am quite happy with it. It is a great rain jacket and I use it for my top layer when backpacking in 40+ degree weather. It would work perfectly for your application. If you do make the purchase be tender with front zipper, if you try to zip it half way up its hard to undo. Hope this helps! Have a fun time in Europe sounds like a blast!
