Never question whether or not to pack a rainshell again\227the Stoic Women\222s Vaporshell Jacket protects like an atmosphere when you wear it, but weighs as much as an apparition when you have it in your pack. This lightweight, waterproof, extremely packable rainshell puts all your past rain gear to shame.

  • Lightweight VaporShell shuns rain and vents body heat like none other
  • 3-D Ergonomic fit moves with you, not against you
  • Extremely compressible—plays nice with other gear in your pack
  • Stoic Vaporshell fabric’s air permeability and vapor permeability is so shocking, you’ll swear it's magic

Bottom Line: Lighter than a vapor.

Talk shop with all the gear freaks out there: ask 'em questions, upload/browse photos, and give your 2¢.

That's what she said...

By:

Loved by the GF... sizing and color (she has black) is spot on... she's only now coming up to speed on the critical analysis of outdoor products (one day she too will be like me), so the specifics are missing from this review (see my review of the men's). I do see her grabbing it exclusively from the quiver of gear, so that says something!

Great Rain Jacket

By:
May 11, 2011

Got this for my wife and so far she is a medium in everything Stoic including the vapor shell, she's about 5'8 135lbs the fit is perfect for her. This jacket is very lightweight and breathable the water beads up and dries quickly. No hand pockets are awkward but not really a big deal. She loves the color!

I am going on a study abroad trip in the spring and we are going

I am going on a study abroad trip in the spring and we are going through mostly southern Europe and I was wondering how this jacket would hold up as a top layer jacket if I layered underneath. I am trying to pack as lightly as possible.

It should serve you very well I think. I've used it as a top or outer layer a fair amount and it does a great job. I wrote a review on my site if that helps.

I own this jacket and am quite happy with it. It is a great rain jacket and I use it for my top layer when backpacking in 40+ degree weather. It would work perfectly for your application. If you do make the purchase be tender with front zipper, if you try to zip it half way up its hard to undo. Hope this helps! Have a fun time in Europe sounds like a blast!

In-house Demo: Stoic VaporShell

By: Backcountry.com Employee
May 10, 2011

The Stoic design team demonstrates the wicked breathability of the VaporShell, alongside a few competing jackets. These bubbler tests show air being pushed through the fabric (air permeable) while still remaining completely waterproof.

it's good

By:
February 22, 2012

I called and spoke with someone about this jacket. I didn't realize it was backcountry's brand. I love the color and the price. The rep was pretty specific on it not being silent when you are in motion. I was asking him about using it to run in. I have run in it and I did not find it to be annoying. It was without some rustling but what jacket is completely silent. So far so good.

Great looking & Value packed shell

By:
July 2, 2011

Fantastic fit and construction, you certainly cant go wrong with this shell. It has a nice long cut with some feminine articulation, colors are great too. It breathes as well as some of my wifes other gore tex pieces. could use more pockets but at this price you cant go wrong! It makes a great backpacking and rain jacket.

Hike/PackRaft in a downpour- Eureka Creek, AK

By:
September 7, 2011

I spent Labor Day weekend hiking off the Denali Highway- 20 miles of hiking and packrafting an additional 20 miles. This was a trip that really gave me a deep appreciation of my gear because it poured rain 2 out of the 3 days we were out. The 20 mile hike was nearly ALL bushwhacking through shoulder high willow and alder, so when it wasn't raining, it certainly was nowhere near dry around me. This jacket held up to everything very well. While rafting it stayed in my pack outside of a dry bag (since it went in wet) and got SOAKED. It also served as a buffer between my sleeping bag and the rain fly we were sleeping under. After being packed in my pack, stuffed next to my bed, poked by innumerable sticks, and staying wet for 3 days straight because it didn't get a chance to dry out, I am happy and relieved to report back to you all that this thing is still 100% waterproof, breathable, and dries pretty quickly. I was surprised because it's sort of a thicker fabric. I am 5'9" 145lb and the M fits great with nice long arms and a big ol' hood!!! Attached is a picture of us hiking through mercifully low brush. I am in the middle with the Stoic jacket on and Eureka glacier in the back ground.

attractive fit, super light and packable.
very fitted with nice movement and length in arms--great for bike riding
kept me dry in wa fall rain, we'll wait and see how it holds up to an alaskan spring.
not having pockets was an adjustment but being rather fitted for a rain shell i get it.

This Jacket runs true to size & is a bit more vibrant in person than pictured above. This is a great shell or rain jacket. If it had a powder skirt on it I would wear it skiing.

I love this jacket

By: Backcountry.com Employee
June 24, 2011

I absolutely LOVE this jacket. I just wanted a light jacket that was waterproof and didn't stick to my skin if it was warm out. This was that jacket! The hood is nice and big, the jacket is a good length not too short not too long. It also doesn't stick to your skin if it is warm/hot out but raining so wearing a short sleeve shirt underneath is totally fine. My only complaint was that there is only one pocket on the chest, I can't tell you how many times I go to put my car keys in my pockets and drop them on the ground by accident. But overall a great rain jacket for the price.

Picked this one up from the warehouse just today for the girlfriend and she digs it! Sizing chart is pretty dead on and it fits great. Excellent water proofing and super breathable - 68K is not a gimmick! Only complaint is the lack of front pockets but that's easily gotten over.

vaporshell material more testing available

By: Backcountry.com Employee
May 20, 2011

more testing results from independent labs SGS, on the waterproofness ratings on the vaporshell materials:

INTIAL TEST: ASTM D751:2006 Procedure A; Mullen Method, the result from this test was 68000 mm of h20 head of pressure.

NEW TEST: AATCC 127-2008 option 2 Hydrostatic head method, results were 28,000 mm h20 pressure head.

NEW TEST: JIS 1092 - 1998, results were 29,000 mm h20 pressure head.

The results of the static tests are less than the dynamic test. this makes sense, as the tests are performed differently, and the 'fail' is defined differently. the new static results are still great waterproof testing results, and as good or better than anything on the market - in the $500 range, as well as the $129 range.

The waterproofness results in the lab correlate to great waterproofness in the field. in addition the DWR finish and seam taping all contribute to the user staying dry in full on conditions.

The true feature for this jacket however is the breath-ability. the testing has shown great breath-ability, as described as 46000 grams of water being transported through a square meter of material in a 24 hr period. The breath-ability and air permeability allow you stay dry on the inside, by transporting the sweat and vapor given off the body in aerobic activities through the fabric.
