Description
Feathery light and fiery warm to make camping in spring and fall more comfortable than ever.
After two seasons in the hands of customers and outdoor enthusiasts, the popular Stoic Somnus down sleeping bag returns with a new, redesigned zipper opening. The Somnus SZ 15 Sleeping Bag features a side-zip opening that now runs the entire length of the bag, from the hood opening down to just above the toe box. Now that it's even easier for campers to climb in and out of this bag (the previous seasons' front opening was designed for climbers), you'll have more time to notice the finer touches like the Pertex shell that keeps pack weight low and the 850-fill goose down that provides ultimate warmth in cold weather.
- Redesigned main zipper is now located on the side of the bag to give this a more traditional opening that's easier for campers to climb in and out of
- Longer main zipper runs to within 16 inches of the base of the foot box, almost the full length of the bag
- 850-fill down insulation provides supreme warmth without weighing down your bag and is highly compressible to make packing a cinch
- Pertex shell material creates a durable outer shell without a nasty weight penalty
- Vertical baffles ensure that the down insulation stays put even if you sleep on your side
- Draft tubes prevent chilly air from entering around the neck so your heat stays inside your bag
- Zippered pocket at the footbox holds a hot water bottle to keep your toes toasty on frigid nights

Mine just arrived today. It was between this bag, a Feathered Friends option ($365) and the GoLite Z10 ($349) and I chose to save $150. Am I ever happy I made this decision. There's no way that those bags are worth nearly twice the price of this bag.
Here are the weights:
Bag alone: 34.3 oz
Down weight: 19 oz
Stuff sack alone: 4.7 oz
Total weight: 39 oz
Stuff sack dimensions: 17x9 (uncompressed bag in it), 12x10 (bag compressed)
I'll have to agree with the other posters that I'm not overly thrilled with the quality of the stuff sack. I'll upgrade it more than likely. Other than that everything about this bag is a win. I can't wait to give it a try! If it performs as advertised I'll upgrade this to 5 stars.

Is this a YKK zipper, and possibly the size? I'm trying to mate it to a REI bag which is YKK #5.

The zipper on the standard (6') bag will go about 3/4 of the way down, so roughly four and a half feet. Scale that up for the larger bag.

Would it be reasonable to fit a long into a 10L stuff sack?
Phil Maher
Member since
You could do it, but it's not going to be particularly reasonable or easy. 10L is usually a small in most comp sacks, A medium (14-ish liters) is a better choice because it saves you a lot of effort when you pack and repeatedly over compressing is really hard on the down itself.

Is the down used in this sleeping bag collected from birds in a humane way?
Matt Towner
Member since
What is your definition of humane? The only way to collect down from a bird (goose) is after the bird has been killed. Stoic doesn't provide any information on how the birds were treated when raised, so there isn't really a good way to answer that question.

Made in China so I'm guess not. LOL. Its a great bag well worth the money!

Down collected in China is almost always taken during the food slaughter process. The birds are being killed anyway, and your views on that are up to you. Not all down is collected from dead birds or even plucked from their chests while they're alive. Older birds produce more and higher quality down, but younger birds are the ones they kill for food. Some companies use only down collected from nests during the molting process, but that's going to be the higher-line manufacturers (they make a huge point of saying it in their PR), but you're going to pay dearly for the more expensive methods they use.

Solid Bag for the Money

I finally had the opportunity to try this bag out a couple of weeks ago and feel it is a solid bag for the $. The bag is very light and compressible and while not getting close to its stated temperature rating kept me very comfortable in temperatures in the 40's. I do agree with another reviewer that the description stating it has a neck baffle is misleading as it does not. However, the hood works really well and cinches tight and I really enjoyed the built in pocket that you can stuff a shirt or jacket in to use as a pillow. The drawcord on the hood was not great and I'm a little surprised that a more conventional device wasn't used - the stiff cord hangs in your face if you're not careful. The stuff sack is not very good and will need to be replaced if you want to reduce weight and get full compression of your bag. Overall I rate this bag as really good and at the price I paid you can't beat it for an 850 fill goose down bag. I would definitely purchase again but wish stoic would put a few extra $ into the product and upgrade the cinch on the hood and the stuff sack.
good but could be better

the bag is warm, light, and well made. The backcountry description infers this bag has a neck baffle or collar but it does not. I don't believe any other premium manufacturer is making a 15 degree down bag without a neck baffle..This really surprised me when I saw it did not have one.. The backcountry description is misleading.. other than this one issue, the bag is very nice for the money.. well worth the price.

This bag is a hidden gem of a find! Check out the specs. 850fill goose down-not duck down, insotect baffle tech, pertex quantum fabric, good mummy cut-roomy up top in case I need to layer, light weight. You prob can't find a comparable bag unless ya spend upper $300-400 range easy. I live in Pacific NW... Play in the Sierras...I'm a lightweight backpacker-30plus yrs. backpacking/outdoor experience. It's plenty warm-so far it's been great- used it into mid 20's with lightweight base layer & thermarest foam pad.So nice -I actually bought 2 more. One for an extra & one for a friend. Well worth the investment.
Love it.

Somnus 15 Long vs. Marmot Sawtooth Long

Here's a shot comparing the Stoic Somnus SZ 15 Long to the Marmot Sawtooth Long. The Sawtooth is just a tad longer & a bit wider throughout.
Very nice bag

Terrific bag. Pertex shell is lightweight but very tough. Very warm - on a 20F degree night, I was quite comfortable with just wearing my base layer. The next night, we were 4000 ft higher and it was -1F - with base layer on top and bottom, plus mid layers, I managed thru that night - still a little cold but manageable. The only cons the comes to mind - the stuff sack is heavy and not at the same level of quality as the bag. I'll be searching for lighter replacement sack for this bag. The shock cord that circles the face area to open or close it is a little thick and in-elegant - the cord tends to dangle on one's face during the night. Given how well the rest of the bag is made and designed, I'm surprised this detail lacks the same level of detail and attention.

albp28922 -
I just received mine & completely agree with your assessment of the compression stuff sack and the hood cinch cord. Really odd how janky these two items are given the overall quality/value of this bag.
To remedy the hood cinch, I simply pulled the the stiff elastic cord out & replaced it with the flat drawcord from the cotton storage bag. Works great!
Note to Stoic: Shave a couple bucks off the price of the bag by eliminating the heavy, overbuilt compression sack. Most users either won't use it (due to it being too heavy), already have one, or would be willing to buy their own ultralight model.
I'll post a review as soon as I get this thing out on the trail.

Here is Eric bcskier's response from comments below:
"Did a live chat, and was told that it has 21oz of down fill, and a total weight of about 34oz (2lb 2oz). That's about 1 ounces heavier than last year's design, but the additional weight is just in down fill (last year's design only had 19oz of fill), so it should (hopefully) be warmer."
cgar380

the one I received weighed in @ 32 oz.(size regular) which is only 4 oz more than the feathered friends rock wren I had (size long). Stoic comes with 21oz 850 fill vs 13.4oz 850 fill in the FF bag. The Stoic is a much warmer bag for the weight.
