decent but weird sizing

The material is pretty darn comfy. it stretches so well there's absolutely 0 restriction performing any movement (i can't do the splits). I wish the softshell material breathed a little better though. i run pretty hot and would not be happy hiking in warm weather with these. that being said, they don't really insulate other than sun and wind protection. great fall through spring pant.

the sizing is waaaay off. i'm 6' 190 pounds and got the size large. the waist is a little big, but not bad i guess. the legs are a few inches too long. maybe a 35 or 36 inseam? plan on spending a couple bucks to get the pant legs shortened.

Surprisingly Good!

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size

Bought these pants a few seasons back and for some reason didn't like them (so I sold them). I saw a great deal on this years version and I LOVE them. Not sure what changed (me or the pants). Great fit and stretchy fabric. Cuts wind and breathes rather well. I used them a lot in the late winter and early spring. Pocket placement is excellent (love the side cargo pocket!). I ended up replacing my arcteryx gamma LT with these pants (although these are a much heavier fabric) I just found them more useful than the gamma LT pants.

high quality. bad sizing

  • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
  • Fit: Runs large

I bought a large and medium to try. the mediums were a little short an too tight on my thighs. the larges were too wide on my waist but mostly for. I'm 6'1 190 lbs. I guess I need a large slim?

My favorite

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Very comfortable. Water repellent. Dry very fast. Nice pockets with zippers. Prefer them to my prana and mountain hardwear pants. Recently used it for 3 weeks in India from 25 to 110 degrees. Stitches solid. With my prana and hardwear pants I have so stitches problems.

stoic overhang pants!

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
  • Fit: True to size

I got these from S&C a month or so ago. I really have always been pleased with Stoic products. I wore them for 7 days straight on a canyoneering / backpacking trip to SE Utah last week.

Well let me say that as I got scruffy, dirty, and smelly, my overhang pants still looked amazing. By the last day, it almost looked like I had just put on a fresh pair of pants - not like I had been wearing them (and sleeping in them) for a week.

I did a lot of bushwhacking, fighting through scratchy pion and juniper, as well as scrambling on various kinds of rock. These pants held up great - no tears, scratches, runs, etc. They were warm enough for cool nights but not so hot during the day (temps in 70s, lots of sun), that I felt overheated.

Quick word on the sizing - I usually wear a 30 X 32 pant, and don't like to baggy or too skinny on my legs. These pants fit the bill. I had to use a belt, but I would estimate these were probably about a 31 X 32 unstretched. Nice leg fit too - not so baggy I felt ridiculous, but not so tight as to be constricting or anything.

HIGHLY recommended

Super comfortable

These pants stretch with your every move...never owned anything quite like them before. Haven't tried them yet for climbing...I think I'd be scared I'd rip a hole in them.

Great pants for hiking and climbing.

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size

I use these pants primarily for climbing which they are great at. The fabric is stretchy enough to allow a good range of movement for but slab problems and over hung roof sections. The water resistant coating is also great. They seem to be very sturdy pants that can take the punishment of sand stone very well. They will be on the warmer side in the summer so I wouldn't suggest them for using if your in a humid or warm climate. Otherwise these are great pants!

Wondering if these would be good softshell pants for mountaineering. I'm doing rainier at the beginning of may. Will this work. If not what other recommendations do you have? Keep college student budget in mind if possible.

Responded on

Hi MAG,

I'll start off by saying that I have no mountaineering experience, but I am a gearhead at heart.
Short answer: Get em.

I'd consider these as light-weight/duty softshell pants. They are definitely breathable, super stretchy, and while on the trimmer side of a regular-fit they articulate very well (especially the *super* gussetted crotch). I think for warmer weather (spring) these pants will be great at altitude. They will keep off the chill, block some wind, and breathe very well.

The legs are a little long, but that's my only complaint.

I'd get them, and if they aren't what you want then you can always return through Backcountry!

I bought these in militia green and they fit true to size. Love the color and seem to be holding up. (after only a couple of outings) these things still look top shelf.

great for every task at hand.

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Let me get started by saying I'm 5'10", and a true 32x32 guy. I have thighs the size of tree-trunks that would make even Lance Armstrong jealous. Hiking pants are always a battle for me.

I was wearing North Face's standard Paramount pair of hikers, but had a hard time sitting down in them due to the high inseams. After one week in the woods and a double-week-long chafe treatment, I said enough was enough. So in comes the Overhang Pants.

Stoic did a FANTASTIC job on these, with a double-gusseted crotch. When in need of extra room, these things stretch like the slack in a nylon rope! Goodbye crotch congestion, and hello fresh air! And water beads off these bad boys... it was too good to be true.

Minus the bright orange stitching of the logos and the tags (don't worry, I ripped all that out), I can get away with wearing them at work in the office, though they are a bit baggy for business. But who cares?! It's better than pajamas and looks like they can pass for slacks!

Love the fit of these pants

Great pants to wear in the outdoors. Tough material ensures durability. Fits so nicely I hardly have to adjust it. Allows for lots of freedom of movement so you can use it for climbing, bouldering.

For the money, Awesome!

Used these winter 2012-2013 as my go to field pants conducting Forest Inventory in the Sacramento Mountains of New Mexico. Brush, rocks, snow, sleet, rain, and high winds=these handled them all very well. A little warm on sunny days, so would like to see some inner thigh vents...besides this, stellar. I'm keepin these. I'm 6' with 31-32 waist...medium is perfect.

Amazing pants - don't let ash land on em

  • Gender: Male
  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

These are my favourite pants for backpacking and hiking. I also worked a whole summer at a fishing lodge and these were the only pants I wore. Well ventilated and very sturdy.

I took them on a portage and some ash from the fire landed on them, which instantly melted a little hole in the leg. So I'd suggest changing pants before sitting around the fire, or use dry wood and a small fire.

Responded on

Yep, this is the ONLY problem with these pants. Don't wear em around a campfire, which is hard to avoid.

Is backcountry gonna restock these in smaller sizes?

Responded on

Based on chat conversations with 'gear heads' I believe the Stoic brand has been discontinued all together.

Best Answer Responded on

Its true, look for the stoic names under the backcountry.com brand. Most things should be transitioned over to the new name.

Stoic Overhang - great pants

I'm really impressed with these pants. Long walks in drizzle and they never wet out and dry in a 5 min drive back in the car. Water just shook off. Warm but very breathable with excellent range of motion. You don't notice them even when the conditions beg them to fail. An excellent deal.
