Started out great, but then...

  • Familiarity:I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit:True to size
  • Size Bought: Large

When I initially bought these pants and started using them, I was completely sold on their awesomeness. The fit and flexibility is great. Plenty of useful pockets. Style is such that you can even wear them to the pub after a day of hiking. Loved the articulated knees. Water resistance was a plus.

But then...after a few different adventures in them, I noticed the material in crotch and seat was starting to degrade. It seems that the rubbing together motion of walking plenty of miles in them was causing the material to "pill up" like some sweaters do, and I can tell the fabric is getting thinner in that area. I fear that after a few more uses a hole or rip will develop in that area.

Such a shame.

solid

these things are awesome. for the price, they certainly can't be beat. I had one pair and loved them so much I bought a second pair. They are very comfortable and stretchy. I mostly wear them for climbing outside but I also will throw them on when I am just hanging around and doing errands. I will probably buy a third pair because I wear them that much. I am a 31 or 32 waist depending on company and 32 length and the medium fit me pretty good.

good designs but bad quality. back pockets's stitch is off when i wore it at first time.

Great vaporshell pants

Love these pants..... I have worn them hiking already and even to work! Great construction and material. I will definitely purchase this brand again.

Can't beat the price

These pants are awesome. They're probably about medium weight, and they are stretchy so they don't reduce your flexibility. I've worn them climbing and bouldering multiple times and they don't hinder me like jeans. They seem to be holding up well too. I do have to roll up the pant legs a little though because there is no other way to secure them. They're kind of an odd color, it's like half way between olive green and a light brown, but it goes well with other dark colors, but is kind of weird. I think I got my pair on sale for like $36 and I highly doubt I'll find another pair that is as good of a value as these.

Bomb!

  • Familiarity:I've used it several times
  • Fit:Runs large
  • Size Bought: M

I love these pants! They do run a little large, Im normally a 32 waist, these sit a little loose, just enough room to get a bit fat in. The crotch does sit a little low, but I dont mind that. Great for hiking in cooler weather, but def not a go to in the middle of summer. Love them so much I bought a second pair.

Odd shape and sizing

  • Familiarity:I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I love the sleek zip pockets and the stretchy material but these pants have serious sizing issues. I started out with a Large and there was a full 3 inches of extra waist material. I could stick my fist between my hip and the inside of the waist band. Returned for a medium and now the waste just barely fits thanks to the stretch but in order to lift my legs high the waist needs to be pulled up to my belly button. In other-words the crotch is about 2 inches lower than I would like. This wouldn't be an issue for casual use but I wont be taking these rock climbing as I had originally intended and I probably wont take them on hikes if I know there will be lots of high stepping. I have a very typical athletic body shape and have never had these types of issues with any other pants.

Strange Color, Awesome Pant

  • Familiarity:I've used it several times
  • Fit:Runs large
  • Size Bought: Medium

Super heavy, super stretchy, love the multiple zip pockets. Medium fits like a tight 33 which is perfect for me. Beware though, I don't know how this wide range for the waist works. Although the pant material is very stretchy, the band around the inside waist is not.

Every time I wear these my wife has to tell me how much she hates the color - "pea soup"

Nearly perfect

  • Familiarity:I've used it several times
  • Fit:Runs large
  • Size Bought: lg

Material and construction is excellent. Fit over all is very good. I like the gussetted knees and the fit of the seat. The pocket placement is well done, practical and stylish. A cargo pocket on both legs would be nice, but still, can't complain as they are.

The material and cut would make the pants suitable for wide temperature variations. They will make for great travel pants. I wear them as casual 'khakis' to work. They are very comfortable and if I had to go without a change of clothes, these would be the pants I'd want to be in.

Only real complaint I have is the weird crotch fit...Maybe normal for crag pants?

Im happy with em!

  • Familiarity:I've used it several times
  • Fit:True to size
  • Size Bought: Large

I bought a medium at first, people say they run large, not true. Im a 35-36 and a large is just right. Little long in the legs but i can deal with it. Great pants. Loose and flexible, but not baggy. Endures well and dries fast. They are pretty much my go to pant for hiking and backpacking. I would reccomend em for sure. If you are looking for a pant to go climbing hiking or do pretty much anything out doors its a good price for a great pair or pants. I have tried other brands but these stoics seem to fit and work the best. Color is pretty similar to the image, i bought the grey pair. I have liked using them, buy them, they are a great price on sale. Enjoy the outdoors more.

GOAT IS GOOD

  • Fit:True to size

Great price and great fit. These aren’t thin nylon pants—more like Schoeller fabric thickness so wearing in warm temps may be overkill. I liked the first pair so much I got a second pair in a different color

Great "tall guy" climbing pants

  • Familiarity:I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit:True to size
  • Size Bought: XL

I'm 6'7" with a 36-37" inseam. and the XL's are perfect for me. Love to wear these gym/rock climbing. very durable, I haven't had a skinned knee since starting to wear these.

Good Fit and Durable!

  • Familiarity:I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

The fit of these pants is true to size and the material feels solid. I really like these pants but they are a little on the heavy side.

LUUUUVE them but waist: M=33in L =37in

  • Size Bought: M & L

I just love the pants, from the material, to construction, to the stretchy nature of the fabric. I would buy a pair full price if they made a M to L size. The suggested chart sizing is quite off. I ordered them in two colors after a freind bought a pair. Unfortunately I'm a 34-35 size, 5.9' 173lb. And of course I'm in between. Returned them all :o(. Stoic please make more sizes.

Way too big

  • Familiarity:I returned this product before using it
  • Fit:Runs large
  • Size Bought: Large

I ordered a large based on the sizing guide and they were definitely large. The waist was 37.5 inches, which makes the sizing chart completely untrue. I've bought a few of their clothes a few years ago so I was hoping that they fixed their sizing.

The quality is great and I've always loved them for it but order at least a size down.

Loads of room for the twix & jellybeans

  • Familiarity:I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit:True to size
  • Size Bought: Large

Bought a pair 3 years ago, and incase they went out of stock, I came back and bought another pair. Comfy, dry, wind-breaker, breathable, loads of room for the twix and jellybeans. Some say they run large but I found the large to fit perfectly for someone who is a 34/34 in normal jeans. Dont over wash them, after 3 years, they lost their elasticity a little.

Comfortable and bomber

  • Familiarity:I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit:True to size

These bad boys are awesome. I needed a pair of pants that I could wear in all sorts of terrain including while canyoneering in Utah, which if you've gone, you know it can DESTROY your clothes. I had a pair of Kavu pants that lasted for one canyon before they started getting holes. Not these! Not only can they take a beating but they are super comfortable and offer great flexibility and stretch. I would highly recommend these for anyone if you need a good hiking/outdoor pair of pants. Fit true to size as well.

Comfortable and bomber

Favorite Hiking Pants

  • Familiarity:I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit:Runs large
  • Size Bought: Large

Love these pants. They are water resistant enough to go hiking up in WA or take the dogs down to the river. Also they look good enough to wear around town. The soft shell material is not only stretchy but the crotch have a big gusset so you don't have to worry about range of motion. The waist does have about 3 fingers of play in them for me but I don't mind it. Just makes it easier if I need to layer anything.

Amazing Feel

  • Familiarity:I've used it several times
  • Fit:Runs large
  • Size Bought: medium

These pants feel great when climbing at the gym, or at the bar afterwords. Extremely comfortable and lightweight. Pants are durable and haven't ripped even after sliding down the wall.

Can anyone tell me if these pants tend to stretch overtime? I read a post that mentioned they will loose some elasticity, but what about the size? I'm in between sizes and have to decide which size to keep. Thank you

I've had mine a few years and haven't noticed lose in elasticity. They fit loosely in the legs, so if you're between sizes and have thinner legs, I'd go down. There's enough stretch in the waist to accommodate going smaller as well.

Wondering if these would be good softshell...

Wondering if these would be good softshell pants for mountaineering. I'm doing rainier at the beginning of may. Will this work. If not what other recommendations do you have? Keep college student budget in mind if possible.

Hi MAG,

I'll start off by saying that I have no mountaineering experience, but I am a gearhead at heart.

Short answer: Get em.

I'd consider these as light-weight/duty softshell pants. They are definitely breathable, super stretchy, and while on the trimmer side of a regular-fit they articulate very well (especially the *super* gussetted crotch). I think for warmer weather (spring) these pants will be great at altitude. They will keep off the chill, block some wind, and breathe very well.

The legs are a little long, but that's my only complaint.

I'd get them, and if they aren't what you want then you can always return through Backcountry!

are these pants for winter or summer? spring or fall?

Due to the highly breathable material and design of these pants, they would be best for Summer, and maybe Spring, or Fall. The polyester fleece lining provides comfort on those mornings in the canyons, but they are awesome in warmer temperatures as well. These are NOT an insulated winter pant.

I have my eye on these for a CT thru hike in July. I am 6'4" 200lbs, size is between 34-36 x 34-36. Any recommendations on sizing? The xl inseam seems a little short at 32.8.

I'm 6'3" around 200 lbs - usually wear 34x34 or 34x36 pants (34s can be just a tad too short) - which size would you recommend?

Do these have fleece lining or not?...

Do these have fleece lining or not? description says that they do.. some reviews clearly say that they do not, while some older reviews make it sound like they might..

no. no fleece lining. the description is wrong. the fabric is a mid-weight stretch nylon. the interior might be 'brushed' a bit to soften it to the touch , but there is no barrier bonded to the fabric, and no fleece lining. That said, I love the fabric. It's perfect for spring and fall, ok for winter if you're working hard, and not too hot for summer nights. Sheds light precip but not fully waterproof. Very breathable. Great pants!

I am planning on going on a thru hike this...

I am planning on going on a thru hike this coming year and was wondering how water resistant these pants really are. Will they be able to handle heavy rain, sleet, and snow or are they just made to handle light rain and mist?

I bought these pants last year and have worn them a lot, but I wouldn't plan on using these for heavy rain. They do fine for light rain. They're super comfy and have held up to all my outdoor activities and yard work. If you wore a shell over these? They might do the trick.

I just picked up a pair of the Stoic Microlith softshell pants off SAC. They fit great and I love em, and now I want a pair of these. How will the sizing compare? I've heard so many mixed reviews about Stoic sizing that I figured I'd ask first. I picked up the Microlith in Large...

I just got 2 pairs in large, the fit is very similar. I am a 34 waist and I have a little play with the waist for layering, but without a layer they fit fine without a belt (and won't fall off the azz). There is a considerable amount of room around the knees for flexibility even though the material is nice and stretchy.

Anyone have pics of the Excalibur or Shale colors? Thanks!

While I don't have a picture I could give you a slightly colorblind guy's opinion.
I would say they are a dark brown to an olive color. I asked the old lady and she went with an olive as well. Definitely a good color choice. I got the denim(read BRIGHT blue) as well. They are so comfy you don't care what color they are.

Is the "Denim" color true to the stock images? It seems everyone is getting the grey ones, and I'd kinda like to know if that's because the denim is as obnoxiously vibrant blue as it appears on the site. : )
