Great pants for hiking and climbing.

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size

I use these pants primarily for climbing which they are great at. The fabric is stretchy enough to allow a good range of movement for but slab problems and over hung roof sections. The water resistant coating is also great. They seem to be very sturdy pants that can take the punishment of sand stone very well. They will be on the warmer side in the summer so I wouldn't suggest them for using if your in a humid or warm climate. Otherwise these are great pants!

Wondering if these would be good softshell pants for mountaineering. I'm doing rainier at the beginning of may. Will this work. If not what other recommendations do you have? Keep college student budget in mind if possible.

Hi MAG,

I'll start off by saying that I have no mountaineering experience, but I am a gearhead at heart.
Short answer: Get em.

I'd consider these as light-weight/duty softshell pants. They are definitely breathable, super stretchy, and while on the trimmer side of a regular-fit they articulate very well (especially the *super* gussetted crotch). I think for warmer weather (spring) these pants will be great at altitude. They will keep off the chill, block some wind, and breathe very well.

The legs are a little long, but that's my only complaint.

I'd get them, and if they aren't what you want then you can always return through Backcountry!

awesome field pants

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
  • Fit: True to size

I bought these in militia green and they fit true to size. Love the color and seem to be holding up. (after only a couple of outings) these things still look top shelf.

great for every task at hand.

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size

Let me get started by saying I'm 5'10", and a true 32x32 guy. I have thighs the size of tree-trunks that would make even Lance Armstrong jealous. Hiking pants are always a battle for me.

I was wearing North Face's standard Paramount pair of hikers, but had a hard time sitting down in them due to the high inseams. After one week in the woods and a double-week-long chafe treatment, I said enough was enough. So in comes the Overhang Pants.

Stoic did a FANTASTIC job on these, with a double-gusseted crotch. When in need of extra room, these things stretch like the slack in a nylon rope! Goodbye crotch congestion, and hello fresh air! And water beads off these bad boys... it was too good to be true.

Minus the bright orange stitching of the logos and the tags (don't worry, I ripped all that out), I can get away with wearing them at work in the office, though they are a bit baggy for business. But who cares?! It's better than pajamas and looks like they can pass for slacks!

Love the fit of these pants

Great pants to wear in the outdoors. Tough material ensures durability. Fits so nicely I hardly have to adjust it. Allows for lots of freedom of movement so you can use it for climbing, bouldering.

Is L size waist 32.4-35.6 ? Correct?
I know M size is 32.4-36.9.

Correct. L is 32.4-35.6. Medium, however, is 29.6-32.4.

For the money, Awesome!

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Used these winter 2012-2013 as my go to field pants conducting Forest Inventory in the Sacramento Mountains of New Mexico. Brush, rocks, snow, sleet, rain, and high winds=these handled them all very well. A little warm on sunny days, so would like to see some inner thigh vents...besides this, stellar. I'm keepin these. I'm 6' with 31-32 waist...medium is perfect.

Amazing pants - don't let ash land on em

  • Gender: Male
  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

These are my favourite pants for backpacking and hiking. I also worked a whole summer at a fishing lodge and these were the only pants I wore. Well ventilated and very sturdy.

I took them on a portage and some ash from the fire landed on them, which instantly melted a little hole in the leg. So I'd suggest changing pants before sitting around the fire, or use dry wood and a small fire.

Is backcountry gonna restock these in smaller sizes?

Based on chat conversations with 'gear heads' I believe the Stoic brand has been discontinued all together.

Its true, look for the stoic names under the backcountry.com brand. Most things should be transitioned over to the new name.

Stoic Overhang - great pants

I'm really impressed with these pants. Long walks in drizzle and they never wet out and dry in a 5 min drive back in the car. Water just shook off. Warm but very breathable with excellent range of motion. You don't notice them even when the conditions beg them to fail. An excellent deal.

Great pants. Need to make more mediums!

I normally wear a 33 waist and either a 32 or 34 length (depending on the manufacturer). They only had the large so I tried that. Sadly it was just a bit too large in the waist and legs but the length was perfect. Thus they are going back. The material seemed awesome, though.

I feel like the medium will fit perfectly. Please make more of those, Stoic!

Bring These Back!

  • Gender: Male
  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I went through a phase where I'm just looking for a good, comfortable, stretchy climbing pants that won't lint up over time, and these fit the bill perfectly! I like the higher waist too so your ass isn't hanging when you're sitting or have to put your feet super high while climbing. Stoic/Backcountry better bring these back!

Awesome pants

I absolutely love these pants. They have a light stretch to them that makes em extremely comfy and the fabric is very durable. They are great for active pursuits or lounging around in. Im 6'1", normally a 34x34, and got a large. They fit superbly. Love the extra side zip pocket!

Great pants

Awesome pants. The fit is great, slim enough to look good but not so tight that it's restricting. Material is light and waterproof - I intend on using them hiking and backpacking. Also bought the Kuhl Revolver, but I'll be returning those in favor of the Overhangs. Similar material, but the Revolver's were too baggy.

love these pants

These have become my favorites. I have two pairs now. The weight of the fabric is perfect in my opinion. Mid weight, not flimsy, not too heavy. No laminate, no fleece lining contrary to the description above. Works for me for all seasons, but best for spring and fall. Nice stretch. Nice pockets. My jeans size is 33x30. So I ordered size M and had them tailored a bit. They were a bit too long so I had them hemmed up to inseam 30. And I also had them tapered at the bottom so the opening was a bit narrower. For climbing, etc, I like to have a minimum of extra fabric flapping around down there catching on things and hiding my feet from view, etc. So, with these changes in place, I think I've found the perfect pants.

Durable everything pant

I rock these camping and hiking and I love them. Plenty of pockets to keep your things secure. Breathe well and can handle very light precip. Pretty cool softshell pant.

Impressed

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I'm not going to lie, I'm very picky when it comes to my hiking pants. So when I got these pants (color: bark, Size: medium) in the mail I wasn't sure if I was going to like them. However, after putting them through the wring this winter, I have to say that these pants are pretty bomb proof. I love the softshell material that they are made out of because it is pretty thin and strecky, yet durable at the same time. As far as water-resistance goes, these pants hold up surprisingly well in light to moderate rain (I wouldn't recommend using these as rain pants). I have seen some reviews that say you can wear these pants in the summer ( I don't because I live in Georgia), but generally I think that these are 3 season pants (Spring, Fall, and Winter).
I have to say that the overhang pants are pretty stellar and I would recommend them to anyone who is on the fence about buying them.
The only down side to these pants is the sizing. I am 5'10 145 pounds and the mediums are a little big on me, but that is nothing that a belt can't fix.
Hope this review helps!

Responded on

I feel the same way about the sizing - at 6'2" 145lbs, the length of the mediums is perfect, but I need the belt for it to say up.

My favorite pants

I bought the overhang pants for some lightweight and compact travelling pants and loved them so much I purchased 3 other colors. The pants are extremely comfortable and versatile. They don't look too sporty, so when you are travelling they are great for long days of walking around cities without looking out of place. I've used them for spring skiing and a couple fo hiking trips and they held up great. They are also great for airplanes because the side pocket doesn't bulge but allows you to keep your wallet convenient without having to sit on it! Hands down the best pants I own, I don't normally write reviews but these pants deserved my praise. Like everything Stoic makes they are awesome.
