2015 Ski Guide2015 Ski Guide

The Monolith casts a shadow over other softshells.

The Stoic Women’s Monolith Softshell Jacket plays hard in the mountains, but its under-the-radar tech helps you avoid the call-it-in-on-the-sat-phone look when it’s time for beverages in town. Stoic’s Monolith Softshell takes over where your past harshell-midlayer combos have fallen short. This fully welded, midweight softshell jacket stands up to nature’s worst without leaving you to suffer in your own body heat. That’s right, Stoic’s Monolith softshell fabric breathes well enough to keep up with a redlining heart when your ski cut fails a fair bit deeper than you had planned. The Monolith’s high collar keeps all that blood flowing through your jugulars nice and warm, and the welded zipper-pockets offer safe refuge for your food, tech gadgets, and keys.

A personal favourite

  • Gender: Female
  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I'm not generous with stars, generally, but this jacket gets 5 from me. I've owned the black version for about a year and it still looks brand new out of the wash. I have other outerwear pieces for serious activities and use this one extensively for around town stuff, as well as some fairly vigorous half-day hikes. I'm 5'4", 125lbs and kind of on the busty side and the medium fits beautifully. I don't find it too "hour-glassy" as one reviewer noted. Got mine off steepandcheap and it was a bargain.

Okay...but seems thin

I ended up returning this after purchasing it from Steep and Cheap.

As I thought this seemed thinner and not as heavy duty as say an Outdoor Research or North Face softshell...both of which I've had and enjoyed.

It seemed like a good deal for $50-something, but then I realized, I'd rather spend a bit more for a jacket from one of the other 2 I know I'll love and be warm enough in.

Would be good for a spring or early fall ski or hiking I'm sure...sleeves were ridiculously long as well...

Good jacket, if you've got looooong arms

Bought this for my wife who is normal sized. It fit great in the shoulders, chest, everywhere, except for the sleeves. They were about 3 inches too long for her arms. She doesn't have short arms, in fact, her sleeve length fit perfectly with the sizing chart. If you've got long arms or don't mind extra sleeve length, this is a really good jacket. Otherwise, you might want to check out other options.

Too much shape.

I like stoic Jackets, but lately they're trying to do too much of hour-glass shape. I understand some people are very curvy, but as Stoic is more of athletic brand, I hope pull back ridiculous hour-glass shape a little. I really like the cut of Breaker Fleece Full-Zip Hooded Sweatshirt. It was more straight athletic shape with slight flare. Pleas Stoic, get your shape straight!
