Description

The Monolith casts an imposing shadow over all other midweight jackets.

Beat winter's frigid bite with the Stoic Men's Monolith Softshell Jacket. Highly-breathable softshell fabric offers ample warmth without leaving you to suffer in stifling heat underneath. Where your previous midweight jacket failed and sentenced you to sweaty hikes in the backcountry, the Monolith Jacket prevails with supreme comfort. A high collar protects your neck from gusty winds on ridgetops, and the versatile cut keeps this jacket close to your body for extra warmth while still allowing the freedom of movement you need to play hard in the hills.
  • Monolith softshell material features high-breathability and water-resistance for comfort and protection from the elements, and four-way stretch for mobility
  • Monolith softshell uses a nylon face fabric with a water-resistant laminate and on the inside a polyester bonded fleece for warmth
  • Welded seam construction further improves overall breathability and creates a more durable build that lasts through seasons of use and abuse
  • 3-D Ergonomic construction has a fit that's close to the body to help retain warmth but is still roomy enough for layering underneath
  • Backcountry.com is the exclusive US distributor for Stoic products

The "go-to" for spring

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size

Stoic is at it again! This jacket is very high quality and feels great. I use this all through Spring and Fall. It is not a super warm jacket but great for weather in the 50's and 60's. It is water resistant and I have worn it in the rain a few times and always stayed dry. I am about 6' tall and 160 lbs, I ordered the medium and it is a good fit, but maybe just a little bit smaller than I hoped.

close but returned

  • Gender: Male
  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I've been looking for soft shell jacket for a specific purpose. I live in Vt and ski in Ut once/year. I had this vision of finding a soft shell that could serve as an insulating layer under a hard shell - while being a stand alone jacket on warm blue bird days at Alta.

The stoic was close but I ended up returning it. The fit was awesome (5 10 155 pounds medium) and the quality was top notch. Nice flat seams and really nice softshell outer fabric. It was very thin though - and for Vt use not quite warm enough for enough of the year. The real kicker was the color combo. Kind of like when a chain smoking chef cooks fine cuisine. The flavors are all there but the taste is off. Couldn't get my head around the purple and strange teal. That combined with the very light weight was enough to get returned...

How does this jacket compare to the Stoic Welder Lo?

Responded on

Similar fabric, but the Welder has a hood.

Sizing is a bit off

Liked the overall look of the jacket, but the medium was too small and the large too big.

Perfect

Simply put, this is a perfect jacket. Fits well, the feel and movement of ht efabric is excellent, and the product quality is top notch. Recommended for sure.

Great Function and Great Look

Grabbed this jacket right after Christmas '11, lost my REI soft shell in an airport. I love this jacket. The fit is awesome, looks great. I've only put it to the test once so far, wearing it under a hard shell jacket, to go snowboarding in the Wa Cascade Mtns. This soft shell, along with a Stoic Merino Wool / Spandex blend mid weight shirt underneath it, kept me warm at the top of the hill in 25 degrees with 40mph sustained winds. Was not cold at all!

Solid Softshell

I picked up the Excalibur/Shale in a large off of SAC and love it! I did end up returning it because I received a Mountain Hardware Alchemy Softshell for Christmas which couldn't be exchanged.

In comparison: the Stoic Monolith is a much heavier jacket in weight and feel. I am 5'10" 190lbs with an athletic build and can only fit a t-shirt under the Alchemy where as the Monolith would allow me to at least put a sweatshirt on underneath it. I do own the Stoic Welder Hi Softshell in a large which fits more like the alchemy. The color of the Monolith is great and the excess cord from the side cinches goes into the pocket which is a fantastic way to hide it.
