Description

Beats the bite of cold weather and looks the part on the trail or downtown.

Make the Stoic Men's Monolith Softshell Jacket the first jacket you reach for when you head out for a chilly morning trail run or backpacking mission in the fall. Highly breathable Monolith softshell fabric keeps you warm while also allowing excess heat to move away from your body, a point of difficulty for many competing midweight insulating layers. The versatile 3-D ergonomic cut leaves just enough room for your baselayer and a thin midlayer, and it allows for unrestricted range of motion—a nice touch when you're moving in the mountains, on the trail, or around town.

  • Monolith softshell material features high breathability and water-resistance for comfort and protection from the elements and four-way stretch for mobility
  • Monolith softshell's nylon face fabric has a water-resistant laminate and bonded fleece on the inside for warmth
  • Welded seam construction further improves overall breathability and creates a more durable build that lasts through seasons of use and abuse
  • Fleece lining adds plenty of warmth so there's no need for bulky insulation
  • 3-D Ergonomic construction has a fit that's close to the body to help retain warmth but is still roomy enough for layering underneath
  • Two front hand pockets give you a place to stash your keys, snacks, and small essentials
  • Backcountry.com is the exclusive US distributor for Stoic products

  • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
  • Fit: True to size

I wasn't impressed with the quality of the jacket. The seams are glued together rather sloppy and the fit is boxy. It probably gets the job done, but I'm not convinced it will hold up well. I sent mine back.

How does the fit run for this coat? I am 6'3" , 215lbs..

It's all about knowing your chest size. (You can look inside a suit coat that fits well...). With that number, consult the size chart and you'll know everything you need to know.

Are there two front "hand warmer" pockets, plus the chest pocket? ie. three pockets in total?

how would this be for winter mtn biking? i want a little warmth but more wind reduction.....

Responded on

This would certainly be a good option for that kind of activity. It will be warm but is also very breathable so their should be any overheating issues on climbs. I would also suggest the Marmot ROM or the Patagonia Adze as other options to consider. Each of those will provide excellent wind blocking.

Responded on

I do a lot of winter riding... and I'd really recommend you get something with a drop tail to cover your lower back. Not only can that area make you extra cold (thin skin, little fat) but also a drop tail will protect you from the wet spray of the rear wheel.

For winter mountain biking, I really recommend something like this instead:

http://www.backcountry.com/louis-garneau-perfector-2-jersey-long-sleeve-mens

I wear this over a base layer and sometimes another jersey layer and it is warm but super breathable. (Was out in in last night at 27 F and felt perfect the whole time.)

I keep a shell in my camel bak as an extra/windstopping layer should the temperature drop or the weather get nasty... and that combination gives me a great deal of versatility rather than having a single soft-shell layer.

Bring back the Goat logo

This jacket was top notch when it was called the Backcountry.com Shift Softshell. I won't buy it with the ugly stoic name/logo/colors

Is this jacket windproof?

Is this jacket windproof?

Responded on

This jacket will block a good 99% of the wind, as most other soft-shell material out there will. Not as good as a hardshell, but the bonded inner fleece will make it feel warmer in the wind then a hardshell.

A+

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size

I wear it almost every day of the fall/spring and some of the winter season as well. Very little care needed. I usually wipe it off with a damp cloth if it gets dirty and its fine. I've never put any extra rain repellent wax on it and it works great. I've rubbed on rock, trees, and dirt and the fabric is still flawless. The glued seams are great and the stretch fabric at the wrists is a nice touch. Nice job Stoic

Tough

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size

This jacket has proven to be the most comfortable and lightweight softshell's I've ever owned. The fleece lining feels great when just wearing a T-shirt (in both warm and cool weather). Lots of room to layer up if needed, but still form fitted. I crashed on my bike while riding in it and there was no visible damage to the the jacket at all even after sliding 10ft on my back. It's tough.

What is the material of the outer shell (what is monolith soft shell)?

Responded on

The material of the outershell is a stretch woven with a DWR finish. 85% Nylon and 15% Spandex. Monolith is a 2 layer soft shell, with 4 way stretch, breathable and water resistant. This soft shell can be used for multiple seasons.

It's a cool, technical-like outer shell with a thin fleece lining.

almost perfect

  • Gender: Male
  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I'm a big fan of this soft-shell. Keeps out the wind/rain, while keeping in enough air for warmth without overheating. The sleeves are very long, so unless you have simian blood you'll probably have to roll them up a bit.

Great Jacket!

  • Gender: Male

This is very comfortable, and i love the look of it. Not as warm as i expected, fleece lining is somewhat thin. However, this is a great active wear jacket, once i started moving I was significantly warmer. Very good product from Stoic.

How does this jacket compare to the old BC Shift powershield softshell? I have one from a few years back in Sangria Red with the goat logo and love that jacket. I'm looking for an update and this looks similar and was wondering how close this product is to my BC jacket.

Responded on

also wondering the same thing.

Amazing jacket

  • Gender: Male

I bought this jacket for my husband. Overall the product is amazing (good quality, fit, and style). The only issue is that the medium was a bit too small and the large was a bit too big.

Could somebody from Backcountry please post some pics of the forest and midnight colors for me to see? I can tell that the pics above are misleading... particularly in the darkness of the green. I own other Stoic pieces in "forest", and they are WAY lighter than that picture is showing.

This is actually supposed to be labeled as DARK FOREST. It is not the same Forest as the Spring items which you may be referring to. I don't have the Monolith but another style in that color. You can see it is a dark green.

Thanks for the pic Zoltan. Since posting this, I have actually seen the jacket and tried it on, and I can confirm it looks nothing like other Stoic pieces with "forest" color. A backcountry representative actually told me the color of THIS jacket is supposed to read "dark forest." Appreciate your pic, anyway!

Superb gear!

  • Gender: Male
  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

This is my first Stoic piece. I have plenty of Arcteryx, MH and Marmot, so I'm accustomed to well-made gear. This Stoic stacks up very, very well against the best of the big brands. The seamless cut and stretchy fabric feel like Arcteryx level gear. Finish is 1st rate and the fleece inside is very warm for such a thin layer. It's impressively weather-proof as well yet I don't really overheat and if I do I cool down quickly. Fit is athletic but not tight. I could add a baselayer if necessary. All together this is a First Class piece, useful for at least 3 seasons, maybe even deep winter depending on how you layer it and what you're doing. Highly recommended.
