Description

Layer it, or wear it alone.

The Stoic Men’s Merino Composite ¼-Zip Top puts an end to pilling while it dials you into perfect temps whether you’re cutting out a skin track or you’re just headed to the coffee shop. If you’ve worn merino before, you know the bitter pill—all those little fuzzy balls of fabric. Well, the Merino Composite’s nylon outer fabric fends off signs of wear, while the 18.9-micron merino wool manages moisture, temps, and odor like no-body’s business. A touch of spandex in the Merino Composite’s fabric blend provides a bit of dynamic stretch.
  • Nylon and spandex blended in with merino fabric allows this merino top greater durability, flexibility, and resists damaging pilling over time
  • Backcountry.com is the exclusive US distributor for Stoic products

Since my previous review, BC DID get these things in some colors other than purple. THANK YOU. Now easily my favorite shirt. Description on BC is accurate and I can only add that it seems to resist odor as well as a 100% wool. Probably going to own 2.

I wore this just about everyday while on a deployment to Germany. Super warm, plenty to wear over a t-shirt in around 50'F weather, although it doesn't block wind. It's great at resisting the stink, and not seeming too dirty. I also like the fact that it's super stretchy, helps when putting it on and taking it off. Looks somewhat classy too, as far as technical layers go.

I'm 6'5" and 206lbs and the large fits perfect. The arm length comes down to my wrist and the length of the shirt comes down further in back then the front which is nice since you don't need the extra fabric in the front. Being 6'5" and finding a shirt with good arm and torso length that you don't swim in is a rarity. Good stuff, Stoic!

Hey Hans, I'm 6'6" and 205lbs, swimmer type build - good to see your review, its always hard to know if something fits me. I usually try to get Large for things, because I like a close fit, but I worry about the arms too sometimes.

This is above the rest, as usual. Fits perfect! I'm 6'2", 190 and the large was spot on! I always look forward to seeing Stoic gear on sale!

This is a great value, nice style, color is a little "out there." Not as fine of a hand as Icebreaker, but I don't feel bad about banging around in it either. I think I would prefer this in 100% Merino (but that adds to the cost).

the merino composite material is a good thick material, has a smooth nylon outer - this allows you to slide on a jacket easily, even a lined jacket like a soft shell.

The inner is merino wool, warm but very temp regulating. not super wind proof = very easy to regulate heat, moisture, being comfortable.

great stretch too!

easy to take care of - cold wash and hang it dry, or dry it ! does not shrink much at all, just dont put in hot dryer.

Really 4.5 if I could do it. This layer is beyond warm, especially for how light it is. I was wearing it over a t-shirt in 40 degrees yesterday and was just slightly on the cold side. About the same as I feel in my pea coat! Great stretch and super soft. Collar stiffness is just right for me. Fit is thin but not tight. I'm a lean (not skinny), athletic 5'6", 140lbs, with a 37" chest and the small fit me perfectly. No complaints about sleeve length (and I usually wear a "short" in formal jackets). There is no stretch when my arms are over my head and the snug wrists ensure that the arms bunch nicely when my arms are down. This is coming with my to Denali this summer.

Small complaints: The zipper is longer than I'd like. I find that it makes the shirt look a little funny half-zipped. The fabric really shows the texture of what's under it. Don't even think about keeping it around as an all-purpose layer for the office as you will look ridiculous if your shirt has buttons or pockets. Even with a t-shirt under, you're still going to get little peaks over your nipples (peaks that don't show up when just wearing my t-shirt).

Got from S & C thinking SHALE would be basically black. Wrong. Very wrong. Awesome fit, feel, fabric, cut, weight and it would be tolerable if I was blind... That photo of the shirt in "SHALE" does not look purple but it absolutely IS; just like it was died with red wine. My five stars is for all things apart from the purple. If BC will ever make this thing in a sane color I will buy another one give this to a homeless vet in Fairbanks who will likely give it to someone else. As is, I wear it as a base layer but the thing is so warm that you have to take off a layer and there's the purple again... Are you reading this BC? Can we do this in a nice black or desert tan?

Wicks like a Champ. Mid Layer? Mid-heavy Base layer? Its whatever you need it to be. Wicks like a Champ. Insulates quite nicely as well. This is the best non-cocona wicking piece I have used. The price is well worth it(30%off). The Fit and Feel were better than expected initially. I keep this in my car when its not on me for any last minute wardrobe adjustments at the mountain.

Well, the best way to describe the feel and comfort of this shirt is the fact that I am purchasing another one. Fit is snug but not constricting.

Just got mine in the mail and I love the fit, how its longer in the back shorter in the front. Also love how you can zip it down to keep from getting overheated. Great product!!! Very soft and easy to layer.

Substantial top keeps you nice and toasty under the right outerwear. Seems like it can stand up to day to day wearing. Smooth outer surface makes layering a breeze.

So this layer is awesome! A little heavier than the Breathe Composite and warmer. The fit is great (I'm 5'8" 220 lbs. stocky) the only thing I would add is the thumb holes that are present on most other base layers. Worth the money, even more so if you can get it on SAC!

I wear a stoic 150 crew underneath (with thumb holes) and I am completely satisfied. Wearing the 1/4 zip as a base layer isn't that great, as the zipper pinches my damned chest hair. BAD. The combo of the 150 crew and this is $$$ awesome.

Super warm, fits great, wicks moisture really well. It's comparable to a patagonia capilene 4. I love that the length and arms are so long!

This is all I need with a shell and I am BEYOND warm. Only drawback is the arms are too damn long.

Very sharp looking, the pictures don't do it justice. The stitching is bada**. I'm 6'2" 170lb and wear the size M. It fits beautifully, the sleeves are a bit long but they sit up because of the spandex. Good as a base layer or just as a sweater over a t-shirt (good down to around 50-ish degrees by itself over a tshirt). The wool inner isn't bothersome or itchy at all. I'm not sure if I'd pay $100 for it but for $50 it's a no brainer.

Has the same fit as the merino bliss shirt, just without the thumb loops, great for us taller people. Merino inner has a terrycloth like finish, very soft, with no itch factor. The nylon face has a really nice hand, and feels durable. It is warm with a little wind resistance, but still very breathable. Excellent heavier base layer.
