Ultimate merino layering fit for cold-weather living.

Give Old Man Winter a run for his money when you pull on the Stoic Men's Merino Comp Anorak and march out into frigid, freezing-cold weather without a second thought. Buttery-smooth merino fabric not only provides winter-weight insulation against chilly temperatures, but this fabric also breathes with ease so you feel comfortable, not clammy underneath. Alpinists can rejoice in the existence of a versatile mid-layer that has both comfort and warmth to burn.
  • Merino composite material breathes, wicks moisture, and helps resists gnarly odors that build up over a long bouldering, skiing, or hiking season
  • A touch of spandex allows the composite material to stretch so this top delivers plenty of mobility and flexibility
  • Nylon and spandex blended in with merino fabric allows this merino top greater durability, flexibility, and resists damaging pilling over time
  • Close-to-skin fit keeps the merino fabric close enough to retain body warmth while still allowing space for layers underneath

I'm happy- and warm.

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I use the anorak over the Merino 150 Crew. That combination has kept me warm while hiking in the 6000-8000' range in NW AZ. The fall temps can get chilly with a pretty good breeze. I've found the Merino Comp Anorak/150 Crew combo very comfortable in temps down to about 38 degrees. The quarter zip is great- I'm surprised at how just a little adjustment of the zip allows just the right amount of heat to escape. It's like having my own temperature dial. I find the hood to be comfortable, and it doesn't restrict side to side vision. I haven't tested it in the rain, and I probably won't. I'd rather wear my raincoat. I cannot evaluate the scratchiness of the wool on the skin, because I've always worn it over another long sleeve shirt. There is however no irritation around the neck area. It also compresses and packs up nice into a Camelback M.U.L.E. It also seems to block the wind very effectively. It's difficult to assess how well it breathes because it's always worn as a top or mid layer, but I can say my wrists will get sweaty with the Anorak/150 combo- maybe because the sleeves are a little long and bunch up a bit around the wrists. As for size, a Large fits my 42" chest perfectly. Oddly enough, the sizing guidelines have a rather awkward gap between the L and XL. As for durability, it's holding up well. There's only a minimal amount of fabric pilling where the buckle from the Camelback rubs the waist. Otherwise, wash it in cold and hang dry and it comes out great. Overall a good top or mid layer.

Decent wool top

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
  • Fit: Runs large

I was looking for a lightweight wool top that I could use running in the colder fall temps and tried this guy out. It was plenty warm and stretchy like you'd expect but the quality of the wool doesn't hold up to that of other brands like Smartwool or Icebreaker. It was rough and scratchy and just not that comfortable to wear, even over another shirt. The quality of the piece was good by all means, just didn't like the wool and the fit was a little big. I'm 6'1" and about 180lbs and it was pretty big on me.

Excellent piece of equipment. This top has been brilliant in the winter and perfect for those evenings where you just need a light layer.

Stoic's R1

I personally would put this layer up against Patagonia's R1. It's extremely light, warm, packs small, dries fast, and did I mention that it's warm! Its also nice that its made of marino, as wool is by far the best fabric for base layers. This is also a great piece for your cold-weather layering system. Get on it (or in it)!

Perfect mid-layer for COLD days.

"Heavyweight" is a true description. Layered with a nice base-layer and quality jacket, your in for a meltdown. I always have to strip off after about 1 hour, other wise I burn up. Great to have on freezing days.
I wish they made the exactly same mid-layer in a mid-weight thickness.

I ordered a L. Im 6'3" and weigh in at about 165-170. Pretty skinny overall with long arms. This item fits perfect.
It also has a chin guard on the zipper. Which I love.
When fully zipped, it also protects the neck very well.

I have used about 5-6 times. I wash everytime, and it still looks new. Smell is always very minimal before i wash.

A great buy

I bought this to compliment my Under Armour but I didn't need the Under Armour after I put this on. It also does a great job covering your neck.

solid piece for cheap

  • Gender: Male
  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

The terry loops are like a harsh one-way velvet at first, but after wearing it a bit and washing it twice that went away as it broke in. Seams remain mildly irritating though. Otherwise breathes well and performs well. Not quite as warm as pure merino per weight though. Great for touring though. Also, very stretchy and fits a bit loose.

Good stuff!

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I'm 5'-10", 139 lbs. w/38 chest & 29" waist. I bought a small, and it's not skin tight, but I like the fit anyway. Very comfortable against the skin, though I still have room under for a thin base layer. It seems pretty durable and abrasion resistant, and the bottom hem is fairly long so as not to exit tucked in. Still not too long to leave out and still be fashionable. My one caveat is I wish the hood fit me better. It's good in a pinch but not a "technical" fit. The tag on the garment claims a bit of water repelency . That's a plus.

Love Merino Wool

I use this to layer up every time I go skiing. After skiing I can shed down to just this layer and it keeps me warm. Great fix and very flexible.

Wore it first time out for an am run - it was 9 degrees with a ls tech shirt under and I was plenty warm - zipped and unzipped in areas and put the hood up and down. Real versatile, I'm short 5'6" and pretty thick through the chest and shoulders the med was good not too loose or tight. Kind of long but most things are on me...

I'm 5'10", 180 with 41" chest and 33" waist. Would you recommend a medium or large?

Best Answer Responded on

I'm 6'1" 210 lbs, fairly muscular build (34" waist) and the large is form-fitting, but not tight. Perfect length in the arms (I buy dress shirts that are 34/35 arm length), and nice long back that extends 3 or 4 inches beyond the waist of my pants.

Nice mid-layer

Not a bad piece of kit.

I picked up the Merino Comp Anorak as a slightly heavier layer for chilly days that didn't require a full-on down or synthetic layer.

I'm 5'10", about 200 lbs, 41" chest, 34" sleeves. Stoic sizing is always suspect, but I went with a large. It fits well - not tight but not baggy. There's a little extra length in the sleeves and the body is slightly long.

The fabric is pretty cool. It has a sort-of terry cloth looped feel on the inside, but the face fabric is smooth and looks pretty durable. The sleeve stitching is coarse and I can feel it rubbing my arm. Not a big deal with a long sleeve base layer on , but I can imagine it rubbing with just a t-shirt underneath.

I'm looking forward to using this layer, but I may try out a medium as well.

A Nice Base Layer

Comfortable, super stretchy and not too pricey. Not as soft as a pure wool piece, but also not as pricey. The hood is comfortable and roomy and the sleeves are plenty long, which is great for my 6'5" lanky frame.

Ultimate layer! A must.....

I got one of these for myself and had to get more. I even ordered some for my boyfriend. This is the ultimate layer. I love the nylon wool blend. Soft and breathable while keeping the wind and chill out. This is the layer that I grab for everytime. I've taken it up Whitney, on tons of climbs and mtb sessions in SLO. The only weird thing is that sometimes my boyfriend and I look like twins, like in Yosemite when we both took the same collor with us. Perfect for around the house as well. Super cozy and looks great!

I got this anorak off SAC and was expecting a heavy weight piece but this is very nicely fitted, stretchy and comfortable. It's my new favourite top-better than my powerstretch hoodies. I want one in every colour.

Stoic Merino Comp 230 Anorak is RAD!

Love this thing! Great for relaxing on a chilly day or pushing for the peak. This is a wonderful mid weight piece. I am 5'11", 210lbs, and have a 44" chest. Went with the large and it is a good performance fit. Not too tight but is a great base or mid layer. So sweet I got two!
