The Stoic Men\222s Merino Full-Length Bottom is the baselayer of choice for guys who push the uphill hard and the downhill even harder. Merino wool provides the warmth your muscles need, but resists odor and evaporates excess moisture as you sweat. The Y-Elastic waist band and flatlock seams prevent chafing caused by your pack rubbing against the waistband of your baselayer. The natural odor-eliminating property of merino wool and the added mobility of spandex make the Stoic Merino Full-Length Bottom a crucial piece in your skiing or hiking wardrobe.
Backcountry.com is the exclusive US distributor for Stoic products
I never gave wool a fair chance until now. I hail from a family of staunch polypro and spandex wearers
Thats all about to change. As per the advice of a friend, I got a pair of these for Christmas along with the I/O Bio Merino Contact Shirt to be used as a base layer. Having worn the pair for several months, I have a few observations:
As advertised, the material was unexpectedly soft right out of the box (not quite as soft as the I/O, though) and stayed so after several washings (you can machine wash them)! I was really worried about itch and abrasion factor with these, but havent had any problems with them, even after wearing them for 4 straight days. These are looong on me, even though I bought the small (Im 58, 165 pounds with a 30 waist). However, the stretch and softness of the material eliminates any problems with bunching around the ankles, etc. Again, I was worried about abrasions, but for no reason, apparently. The waistband is very true to size (measure above the hip), so theres no room for kidding yourself. Honestly, I wouldnt want to be much wider around the middle in these things. The wool stretches a LOT, the waistband does not. Despite all that stretch, you can definitely feel some support when you're wearing these (granted, my thighs are pretty beefy for 5'8"). For the backpackers out there: these are super-lightweight and are ACTUALLY odor-resistant without the funky smell you sometimes get with synthetics, and pack to about the volume of a softball.
So, are they really that warm?
The last two nights, Colorado Springs has experienced -40° F, with highs around 4 today and yesterday. With these pants, the I/O shirt, a t-shirt, jeans, and a down jacket, I've been fine for my numerous treks across campus, and look forward to using them snowshoeing and skiing later this season.
In short, these are THE most comfortable long underwear bottoms Ive ever worn. Ill never wear polypro again. Full stop.
These are a must-have for any outdoor adventure fanatic. Happy trails!
you are a convert for sure. great to hear you like the material, the weight and the fit. The best part is, the merino wool naturally will not harbor odors like poly pro.

Have been wearing my Icebreaker 200 Wt. leggings and LOVE them and so I thought I'd give these a try just to have another/back-up pair. I have them in charcoal and they are really nice and because of the lighter color, white seams, and (small) reflective logo are good for night running. My only issue with them (and why I didn't give them 5 stars) is because the bottoms/cuffs are a little loose/baggy. Other than that they are great and I'd recommend them.
I bought these and the Stoic Merino top for my boyfriend. He loves them! He says they are so soft and comfortable. He hasn't worn them a lot yet, but he won't take off the top! He wears it everywhere, and has said that the bottoms are just as good.
My boyfriend is 6'4" and 270 lbs. He usually wears a 34" inseam. I bought him an XL in these bottoms, and they fit perfect. I highly recommend this item!!! I am going to order some for myself.
Merino coziness with a plentiful helping of technology. This is a beautiful thing. The merger of properly made goods, and organic material. Who would have thought 15 years ago that long underwear would be lightweight and not itch, and warmer than the bulky, heavy, itchy stuff that we had to wear for years? Stoic makes a great product, I am completely sold on them and will be ordering more from them in the near future. Good stuff.
Merino wool is the best material for baselayers and these things prove it. They kept me warm while standing outside in 30 degree weather with 40mph winds and sleet during a photo shoot. When I had to go indoors, they were sweltering, so be sure and make sure you're wearing these for only outdoor excursions.
I bought these for my nephew for Christmas and although he is a teenager of few words, he really likes them and the matching top. He wears this with lightly insulated pants when he's skiing and seems to be comfortable. He's 5'5" and a slight build and the small fits him pretty well. The kid's bottoms all seem to be short on him, but this one works.
How thick are these? Compared to for example smartwool's scale, micro-light-mid-weight? or icebreaker's 150-200-260-320-g/m^2-scale? Have anyone weighed there pants?
I have read some reviews of the Stoic lowers that complain that they are kinda high waist-ed. I actually like that since it keep your back warm. I'm okay with the thermal underwear riding a bit higher so they don't give you plumbers crack when you bend over.
In the XL they are very comfy, the wool feels great and they keep ya warm.
These bottoms are great! Super light, super comfy, and NO STINK!!!! Nice to get ride of my old Polypro bottoms than stunk to high heaven!!!! Get the matching top and be stink free!!!! ( I'm 6ft, 160 lbs and got the Mediums which fit great, they go over my Donjoy knee brace with no problem... I live in SLC and tried on the S, M & L @ the Backcountry retail store)
Aren't you sick of polypro longjohns that start to stink the moment you put them on? After a while they stink right out of the dryer. Where does that smell hide? Merino is warmer, softer, doesn't itch, and doesn't stink. Not even after a weekend of skiing. In a pinch you can wash these in the bathroom sink, toss them over the shower rod and they'll be dry and ready to go by morning. I picked up two pairs on sale and I'm sold.
I'm very pleased with the Stoic wool bottom. I've been wearing wool baselayers for years and have usually stuck with Smartwool or Icebreaker. Decided to give Stoic a try based on a tip from a friend and couldn't be happier with it. Would highly recommend and will be purchasing Stoic products in the future.
you know about merino. it works. these skivvies are a fine example of what a thin layer of the stuff can do for your warmth and comfort in the worst (or best) conditions.
Stoic merino will not let you down, its super comfortable, and very durable. I've tried on many of the higher-priced competitors products, and Stoic's line not only holds up, but actually fits better and feels more comfortable out of the box. Mine has been through several wash cycles, with very little signs of wear. This is a high quality, well constructed piece for layering. There's just something about being covered head to toe in merino...next-level winter warmth.
I haven't used them because I have better and only bought these to have a 2nd clean pair for long trips, but I am sure they are great performance-wise. I just wanted to point out that they are kind of itchy.
