Merino at a Great Price

  • Gender: Male
  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I love when the Stoic gear goes on sale. It's like my own little personal Christmas. This was no exception. I am 6'3 230, and the XL fits very well.

I use my gear primarily for hiking and biking. 200 weight merino is great standalone for under 40-50F or so. With a light windbreaker-type jacket during aerobic activities I would wear this shirt in 25-40F temps. Either way, it is easily worth the money and I hope to get plenty of use out of it. Great quality and great price. A+

Held up well in Glacier Bay, Alaska

Bought this from S&C (backcountry's site). Performance: I took this to my cruise trip to Alaska (August 2012) and it held up well. I had an under shirt, Stoic merino, and a Columbia Softshell/ski jacket. It kept me pretty warm at times I had to take off the softshell which was light weight as well. It has been only six months that I have owned this gear, but has been thru several washes. I have worn this as NTS (next to skin), and not even a lightest hint of itchiness due to the material being wool (Merino). Although I tend not to wear it often as NTS due to deodorant stains.
Odor: No funky smell or even slightest hint of BO. I wore the merino for seven days on and off with no wash on the cruise.
Size: True to size. I am 200 to 210. 6'3" and athletic body. The XL fit was great for me both body length and sleeves wise.
Other Features: The zipper did help went some heat when I was running around to take photos. Unlike traditional baselayers that I have would only have two options, leave it on till you go back to the room, or take it off and possibly freeze when you start getting cold. Other feature that I like is intangible - life time warranty on the workmanship of Stoic.
Future Testing: I will test out in Chicago during winter (cause I stay there) and post again on how it held up in winter climate.

And it still keeps coming back for more

I love this shirt. I'm always a bit skittish about Merino as a base layer. Some just feel better than others. This one rocks. Comfy against the skin and great at most temps. I've worn this shirt from temp ranges of 40 to 80 degrees F so far and it doesn't fail. Even after pushing and sweating through the shirt it dries quickly and (like my title) keeps coming back for more. It does reasonable well at managing stench, better than many polys I've worn.

Slam dunk from Stoic

Picked this up on sale after reading up on the benefits of merino wool and couldn't be happier with my choice! At first I wasn't sure if I'd like the zipper, but this shirt can get pretty toasty when you're active and the 1/4 zip is great to help regulate temperature! I went out early April for a weekend backpacking trip in far northern Minnesota with temps in the 40's. At the trailhead I put my hoody on over this because of the cold, about a 1/3 of a mile down the trail I had to take it off again because this shirt is WARM! I load trailers at UPS and after one night of wear, my synthetic shirts REEK! 2 days of backpacking and there's no smell whatsoever on the Stoic.

I love the fit; it fits me perfectly. Washes up great; Theres no pilling so far after a few weeks of use and washing. The zipper is good quality, hasn't gotten stuck and it seems like it'll hold up well. In conclusion I've started replacing all my synthetics with merino. Solid shirt from Stoic! I also picked up the Stoic 150 weight merino 1/4 zip from SnC and another slam dunk!

Pretty Sweet

I just got this as my first merino top, and it is super warm! For most days that I ski it is actually too warm, but I run warm most of the time. This is an excellent top if you run cold, definitely check it out! Super comfy!

Solid shirt

I am 6'3" 220lb. athletic build and bought the XL. Great fit. Not skin tight, but not loose either. I have long arms and the sleeves are perfect.
I went to wool base layers a few years ago and I will NEVER go back to synthetic (the list of reasons is a review in itself). I was expecting something slightly heavier I guess, for a "200" shirt. However, I am still very satisfied. Got the green/gray color. The green is very bold, not "earthy" but I still like it.
Quality zipper. Solid stitching. Should last a LONG time.
Full retail would be a lot. At a $40-$50 sale price though, it's a fantastic deal for a quality merino shirt!

Great Mid Layer

I am not a big fan of having zippers in the base layer when I am moving around hiking and skiing all day, but I have been using this on top of a thinner Merino base layer on days when it's a little colder out and have been very impressed with the pairing. It keeps me warm and pulls moisture off of my body perfectly. Definitely recommended.
